    Detection of Gene Interactions Based on Syntactic Relations

    Interactions between proteins and genes are considered essential in the description of biomolecular phenomena, and networks of interactions are applied in a system's biology approach. Recently, many studies have sought to extract information from biomolecular text using natural language processing technology. Previous studies have asserted that linguistic information is useful for improving the detection of gene interactions. In particular, syntactic relations among linguistic information are good for detecting gene interactions. However, previous systems give a reasonably good precision but poor recall. To improve recall without sacrificing precision, this paper proposes a three-phase method for detecting gene interactions based on syntactic relations. In the first phase, we retrieve syntactic encapsulation categories for each candidate agent and target. In the second phase, we construct a verb list that indicates the nature of the interaction between pairs of genes. In the last phase, we determine direction rules to detect which of two genes is the agent or target. Even without biomolecular knowledge, our method performs reasonably well using a small training dataset. While the first phase contributes to improve recall, the second and third phases contribute to improve precision. In the experimental results using ICML 05 Workshop on Learning Language in Logic (LLL05) data, our proposed method gave an F-measure of 67.2% for the test data, significantly outperforming previous methods.     Terahertz quantum plasmonics at nanoscales and angstrom scales

    Through the manipulation of metallic structures, light-matter interaction can enter into the realm of quantum mechanics. For example, intense terahertz pulses illuminating a metallic nanotip can promote terahertz field-driven electron tunneling to generate enormous electron emission currents in a subpicosecond time scale. By decreasing the dimension of the metallic structures down to the nanoscale and angstrom scale, one can obtain a strong field enhancement of the incoming terahertz field to achieve atomic field strength of the order of V/nm, driving electrons in the metal into tunneling regime by overcoming the potential barrier. Therefore, designing and optimizing the metal structure for high field enhancement are an essential step for studying the quantum phenomena with terahertz light. In this review, we present several types of metallic structures that can enhance the coupling of incoming terahertz pulses with the metals, leading to a strong modification of the potential barriers by the terahertz electric fields. Extreme nonlinear responses are expected, providing opportunities for the terahertz light for the strong light-matter interaction. Starting from a brief review about the terahertz field enhancement on the metallic structures, a few examples including metallic tips, dipole antenna, and metal nanogaps are introduced for boosting the quantum phenomena. The emerging techniques to control the electron tunneling driven by the terahertz pulse have a direct impact on the ultrafast science and on the realization of next-generation quantum devices

    The Persistent Difficulty of Early Fraction Ideas in Early Secondary School Mathematics

    This study explored the nature of difficulties of seventh and eighth grade students who struggled building their conceptual understanding of early fraction ideas, in particular ordering fractions. The participants engaged in a sequence of lessons that involved the use of fraction circles. The intervention of four weekly class sessions was adapted from the Rational Number Project (RNP) curriculum that has been created for and refined through teaching experiments in the RNP research since 1979. Pre and post group interviews were conducted with each student group for a sufficient identification of the nature of the students’ difficulties. This study identified the whole number dominance strategies used by the students for ordering fractions before and even after the intervention. The students also revealed minimal use of informal ordering strategies that involve more conceptual than procedural understanding of the concept of initial fraction ideas. Considering the short intervention, there was subtle (but meaningful) evidence for a positive influence of the fraction circle model developed within the RNP on students’ developing understanding of early fraction ideas. This study suggests the need of a remedial intervention for early secondary students showing the persistent difficulty with early fraction ideas. Students need to be given enough time with not only concrete models but also appropriate usage of language to support a complete understanding of how to use the models.     Creating a Virtual World for Mathematics

    A virtual world was created using the popular sandbox game Minecraft to support the development of preservice teachers’ knowledge for teaching mathematics. Preservice teachers explored the virtual world for a geometry activity involving area and volume problems. They then discussed how this integration of technology could support students’ effective learning of mathematics in a meaningful way. The findings of the study demonstrated that to a certain extent the Minecraft activity supported the transfer of knowledge from preservice teachers’ mathematics content knowledge to their mathematics pedagogical and instructional practice knowledge. Preservice teachers appreciated the usefulness and effectiveness of the Minecraft activity in enhancing the teaching and learning of mathematics by visualizing mathematical concepts in the virtual world. This integration of technology also gave them an opportunity for professional growth. Although this study focuses on preservice teachers’ perspectives on the Minecraft activity, the technology integration using Minecraft will also be beneficial for students because it engages them in active and discovery learning

    A lesson sequence for place value was developed as an early intervention for kindergarteners. The sequence begins with a children’s picture book involving language familiar to children and continues with hands-on activities for children to make connections between and within multiple representations of place value. Through engaging in the literacy-integrated math curriculum module, kindergartners deepened their understanding of place value and the base-ten number system, as they were consistently engaged in problem solving and mathematical discourse triggered by their own mathematical thinking, as well as purposeful questions prompted by the teacher

    Extraskeletal chondroma can occur in the hands, feet, head and neck. This tumor usually presents as a small solitary nodule. The histogenesis of the tumor is controversial, but some have suggested a metaplastic origin. Chondroma of the fallopian tube is very rare. There is only one report in English literature. The origin of this tumor can be subcoelomic mesenchyme of the tubal serosa or mesenchyme of the myosalpinx. We describe a case of chondroma arising from the serosal surface of the fallopian tube with a review of literature. A 30-yr-old woman visited hospital due to left adnexal mass. On operating finding, 2 x 3 cm sized nodular mass was noted on the left tubal serosal area. The excised mass showed multilobulated appearance covered with thin fibrous membrane. The cut surface was solid, grayish yellow, and myxoid with a focal gelatinous area. The microscopic finding showed islands and elongated lobules of mature benign cartilage without cytologic atypia

    Final evaluation of the project for expanding the role of networks of people living with HIV/AIDS

    In July 2006, the International HIV/AIDS Alliance launched a three-year project on Expanding the Role of Networks of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda. The project, which is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Uganda, sought to increase the involvement of people living with HIV/AIDS (PHA) in the HIV/AIDS response and to improve access to and utilization of prevention, treatment, care, and support services for PHA households. USAID/Uganda commissioned an evaluation of the project’s design, strategies, and performance in order to improve its implementation and learn from its successes and challenges. The study was a cross-sectional descriptive and analytical process evaluation employing both rapid participatory assessment and appraisal techniques. It utilized mixed methodologies in data collection, including a desk review, 113 key informant interviews, and 16 focus group discussions. The evaluation was conducted in 11 project districts. This final evaluation report includes the main findings and recommendations
