The Plastic Surgery Obsession in South Korea

Brief Summary of Capstone Project My Capstone Project is a short film documentary exploring the plastic surgery obsession in South Korea. The focus is on the double eyelid surgery, a controversial and intriguing procedure that creates a crease on the upper eyelid to make small eyes bigger and rounder. The infatuation with the double eyelid surgery is a social and cultural phenomenon that is changing the South Korean people. The documentary attempts to discuss various factors that influence the decisions people make to go under the knife and the social and cultural implications and consequences that result from it. Statement of Concept The concept of this creative piece was to tell a story, and share insight on an issue that is affecting the people of South Korea at an alarming rate and reach. The visual storytelling engages the audience and successfully delivers a message that most people are not aware of. Most importantly, the documentary is able to connect to the audience in ways that verbal or written presentations cannot. The purpose of the documentary is not only to educate the audience, but also to provoke individual questions about what it means to be beautiful and the extent people will go to justify it in their hearts. Context of the work The documentary is not a creative piece in that no new ideas were generated to form a conscious theory regarding the double eyelid surgery. The research was mostly academic, in addition to personal experiences, interviews, and news. Discussion of the medium/processes used in the project’s creation Basic filming devices, including digital cameras, were used to record and document interviews and footage. The Macbook iMovie HD program was used to edit the material alongside Adobe Photoshop. Original interviews were conduced in Seoul, South Korea. The editing was done at Syracuse University. Conclusion The obsession with plastic surgery in South Korea encourages us to reevaluate beauty and societal norms. It also challenges people to consider how this epidemic affects the global community and evolving ideas

A comparison of domestic and self -nail tip sizes

Therefore, this study aims to provide basic data for developing a nail tip size system for Korean consumers by measuring and analyzing home nail products available in the market. To analyze the sizes of home nail tips, the authors examined the nail tip products available online. The authors measure the size directly on 11 points, including vertical length, horizontal width, side angle, thickness, and weight. The results are as follows. comparing the sizes among the home nail tips measured in this study showed that the vertical length was longest among Korean products followed by Chinese and US products, and the Korean products showed the largest deviation between the different sizes. The horizontal width was the widest in the mid-nail tips compared to the upper nail and lower nail. comparison of the size charts presented on the websites selling the products in this study showed that, among the US products, the vertical length was the longest for the stiletto type. Comparing the standard measurement size presented on the websites and the actual measurement of the home nail tips suggests that, although it is difficult to determine whether the sizes are similar simply based on vertical length and horizontal width, compared to the Korean products, the US and Chinese branded products had smaller differences and the size suitability US was highest among the Korea, China, US. This study suggests the development of a size system for self-applied nail tips products suitable for Korean nail sizes

Performance of a lead rubber damper under cyclic shear loading and its applicability to a full-scale structure

In this paper, we investigate the performance of a new lead rubber damper (LRD) and its applicability to a full-scale structure. This device is more advanced than existing lead-rubber based isolation devices. In contrast to the existing devices, multiple lead cores are installed in the LRD in order to enhance the performance of the laminated rubber and lead. It is able to perform effectively under the application of shear force. An experiment was performed to investigate its dependency on the level of shear strain and frequency. The applicability of this new device to a full-scale structure is also examined by performing a vibration test on a five floor modal-test tower
