Selection of a New Enterprise Resource Planning System in a Small Business: The Hinton Mills Case

    Get PDF
This paper introduces a case study of a family-owned local business, Hinton Mills, that initiated a project that would replace its outdated Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. The company was in the agricultural product retailing business, serving mainly local customers (e.g., farmers) since 1918, and had five retail stores located in central and northeastern Kentucky. In 2017, Hinton Mills management decided to evaluate replacing their ERP system. This case study presents the factors that influenced how the small business evaluated ERP system options in replacing an outdated system

MicroRNA-762 is upregulated in human corneal epithelial cells in response to tear fluid and Pseudomonas aeruginosa antigens and negatively regulates the expression of host defense genes encoding RNase7 and ST2.

Mucosal surfaces regulate defenses against infection and excessive inflammation. We previously showed that human tears upregulated epithelial expression of genes encoding RNase7 and ST2, which inhibited Pseudomonas aeruginosa invasion of human corneal epithelial cells. Here, microRNA microarrays were used to show that a combination of tear fluid exposure (16 h) then P. aeruginosa antigens (3 h) upregulated miR-762 and miR-1207, and down-regulated miR-92 and let-7b (all > 2-fold) in human corneal epithelial cells compared to P. aeruginosa antigens alone. RT-PCR confirmed miR-762 upregulation ∼ 3-fold in tear-antigen exposed cells. Without tears or antigens, an antagomir reduced miR-762 expression relative to scrambled controls by ∼50%, increased expression of genes encoding RNase7 (∼80 %), ST2 (∼58%) and Rab5a (∼75%), without affecting P. aeruginosa internalization. However, P. aeruginosa invasion was increased > 3-fold by a miR-762 mimic which reduced RNase7 and ST2 gene expression. Tear fluid alone also induced miR-762 expression ∼ 4-fold, which was reduced by the miR-762 antagomir. Combination of tear fluid and miR-762 antagomir increased RNase7 and ST2 gene expression. These data show that mucosal fluids, such as tears, can modulate epithelial microRNA expression to regulate innate defense genes, and that miR-762 negatively regulates RNase7, ST2 and Rab5a genes. Since RNase7 and ST2 inhibit P. aeruginosa internalization, and are upregulated by tear fluid, other tear-induced mechanisms must counteract inhibitory effects of miR-762 to regulate resistance to bacteria. These data also suggest a complex relationship between tear induction of miR-762, its modulation of innate defense genes, and P. aeruginosa internalization

A Review of Automatic License Plate Recognition System in Mobile based Platform

    Get PDF
Automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) is the process of retrieving license plate information from a captured image or video frames from a sequence of videos. ALPR can assist law enforcement officers to identify stolen vehicles or to capture vehicle information from those that violate traffic laws instantly. It is also commonly used as an electronic payment system for toll payment or parking fee payment. Traditionally, ALPR is installed in a PC-based platform to take advantage of its processing power to process high-quality images captured by high-resolution cameras. Most smartphones nowadays are equipped with a high-quality camera and faster processing system which can be used to develop portable ALPR system. Thus, this has encouraged many researchers to work on implementing ALPR technology for the mobile platform. In this paper, we reviewed several researches that have implemented ALPR in the mobile-based platform. We discuss the techniques used in the three main stages of ALPR namely localisation, segmentation and recognition. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique are summarised in a table

Vietnamese American women’s beliefs and perceptions on cervical cancer, cervical cancer screening, and cancer prevention vaccines: A community-based participatory study

Cervical cancer remains commonly diagnosed in Vietnamese American women. Despite efforts to increase cervical cancer screening among Vietnamese American women, participation rates are persistently lower than the national goal. The objective of this study is to explore beliefs of Vietnamese American women about cervical cancer, cervical cancer screening, and cancer prevention vaccines. A qualitative descriptive investigation captured group perceptions about meaning and beliefs of cervical cancer, screening, and cancer prevention vaccines, and participants’ stories using a community-based participatory research approach. Forty Vietnamese American women were recruited from the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area into four focus groups. Using a process of directed content analysis, focus group transcripts were coded for themes. We found that cervical cancer continues to be a difficult topic to discuss, and Vietnamese American women may not bring the topic up themselves to their health care providers. Some women experienced intense emotions of fear or shame of having their cervix examined. Women delayed seeking cervical cancer screening and needed to have early warning signs, which guided them as to when to seek health care. Women focused on cleanliness through vaginal and/or perineal washing as primary prevention for cervical cancer. There were limited awareness and knowledge about cancer prevention vaccines, specifically the human papillomavirus. Some women relied heavily on their informal social networks of family, friends, or community for health knowledge. Fear and misunderstanding dominated the beliefs of Vietnamese American women about cervical cancer screening and prevention. These findings underscored the importance of having culturally-specific findings, which will inform a multicomponent intervention to promote cervical cancer screening and cancer prevention vaccine uptake within this population

Computer-based cognitive intervention for aphasia: Behavioural and neurobiological outcomes

    Get PDF
Aphasia, an acquired impairment of language that commonly occurs after stroke, can have significant consequences on all aspects of functioning of affected individuals. Some have proposed that the language deficits observed in aphasia are due to underlying limitations in cognitive processes that support language1-3. This ‘cognitive’ theory of aphasia is gaining increased attention in the research literature4, and is the impetus for the study of treatments for aphasia that target these underlying cognitive processes5-8. Indeed, studies of cognitive interventions in healthy populations have reported positive outcomes in behavioural (i.e. language and overall cognitive functioning9, 10) as well as neurobiological (i.e., brain function and/or structure11-13) domains, offering promise for the application of these types of interventions to aphasia. Recently, computer-based ‘brain training’ programs have become increasingly prevalent. BrainFitness (BF) is one such commercially available program; it has been used to show improvement in auditory processing speed, attention and working memory in typically aging adults14, 15. This program has the potential to be a useful intervention for individuals with aphasia, but questions regarding the clinical utility of the program and neural correlates of training-related behavioural changes remain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of BF training in people with aphasia using behavioural and neurobiological outcome measures
