Introducing BSW Students to Social Work Supervision Prior to Field
Little empirical information exists about how social work students are prepared to utilize supervision in practice. This study describes an experiential exercise designed to introduce BSW students to social work supervision prior to their field experience. MSW students enrolled in a supervision practice course provided mentored supervision to 42 BSW students in an introductory skills course. The skills course involved a progressive role-play that spanned the whole semester. Mixed methods were used to investigate BSW student perceptions of the exercise. According to survey data, BSW students reported a strong working alliance with MSW students and high satisfaction with the supervision they received. Qualitative data revealed two overarching categories of students: 1) students who reported benefiting from the exercise, and 2) students who reported mixed benefits or no benefits. Students who understood the role of the supervisor were also more likely to reported that they benefited from the exercise. Students who were unclear about the role of the supervisor reported mixed or no benefits of the exercise. Recommendations for social work educators relate to the need for educators to provide information on the use of supervision for BSW students, the necessity for guiding student reflections as part of the supervision exercises, and considering the developmental levels of students when crafting educational interventions
The effect of metabolic phenotype on sociability and social group size preference in a coral reef fish
Although individuals within social groups experience reduced predation risk and find food patches more consistently, there can be competition for food among groupmates. Individuals with a higher standard metabolic rate (SMR) may be less social, to prioritize food acquisition over defense, while a greater maximum metabolic rate (MMR) may modulate sociability through increased competitive ability. Therefore, in theory, individuals with a higher SMR may prefer smaller groups and those with greater MMR may prefer larger groups. We examined links among metabolic phenotype, sociability, and choice of group size in the redbelly yellowtail fusilier Caesio cuning. Individuals were exposed to three association tests: (a) a choice between two fish or zero fish; (b) a choice between five fish or zero fish; and (c) a choice between two fish and five fish. The first two tests quantified sociability while the third measured relative group size choice. Although there was no link between SMR and sociability, fish with a higher MMR were more social than those individuals with a lower MMR. While no correlation was found between MMR and group size choice, there was weak evidence that, if anything, individuals with a higher SMR preferred larger groups, contrary to our hypothesis. As C. cuning is an active fish that spends a large proportion of time operating above SMR, this result could suggest that the links between sociability and SMR may shift depending on a species’ routine behavior. Links between sociability and MMR may arise if competitive ability allows individuals to obtain resources within groups. Although metabolic traits had no significant influence on group size choice, variation in food availability or predation risk could alter the effects of metabolism on group size choice
Safety and efficacy of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine (AZD1222) against SARS-CoV-2: an interim analysis of four randomised controlled trials in Brazil, South Africa, and the UK.
BACKGROUND: A safe and efficacious vaccine against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), if deployed with high coverage, could contribute to the control of the COVID-19 pandemic. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine in a pooled interim analysis of four trials. METHODS: This analysis includes data from four ongoing blinded, randomised, controlled trials done across the UK, Brazil, and South Africa. Participants aged 18 years and older were randomly assigned (1:1) to ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine or control (meningococcal group A, C, W, and Y conjugate vaccine or saline). Participants in the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 group received two doses containing 5 × 1010 viral particles (standard dose; SD/SD cohort); a subset in the UK trial received a half dose as their first dose (low dose) and a standard dose as their second dose (LD/SD cohort). The primary efficacy analysis included symptomatic COVID-19 in seronegative participants with a nucleic acid amplification test-positive swab more than 14 days after a second dose of vaccine. Participants were analysed according to treatment received, with data cutoff on Nov 4, 2020. Vaccine efficacy was calculated as 1 - relative risk derived from a robust Poisson regression model adjusted for age. Studies are registered at ISRCTN89951424 and ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04324606, NCT04400838, and NCT04444674. FINDINGS: Between April 23 and Nov 4, 2020, 23 848 participants were enrolled and 11 636 participants (7548 in the UK, 4088 in Brazil) were included in the interim primary efficacy analysis. In participants who received two standard doses, vaccine efficacy was 62·1% (95% CI 41·0-75·7; 27 [0·6%] of 4440 in the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 group vs71 [1·6%] of 4455 in the control group) and in participants who received a low dose followed by a standard dose, efficacy was 90·0% (67·4-97·0; three [0·2%] of 1367 vs 30 [2·2%] of 1374; pinteraction=0·010). Overall vaccine efficacy across both groups was 70·4% (95·8% CI 54·8-80·6; 30 [0·5%] of 5807 vs 101 [1·7%] of 5829). From 21 days after the first dose, there were ten cases hospitalised for COVID-19, all in the control arm; two were classified as severe COVID-19, including one death. There were 74 341 person-months of safety follow-up (median 3·4 months, IQR 1·3-4·8): 175 severe adverse events occurred in 168 participants, 84 events in the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 group and 91 in the control group. Three events were classified as possibly related to a vaccine: one in the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 group, one in the control group, and one in a participant who remains masked to group allocation. INTERPRETATION: ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 has an acceptable safety profile and has been found to be efficacious against symptomatic COVID-19 in this interim analysis of ongoing clinical trials. The Effect Metabolic Rate on Choice of Group Size in a Gregarious Coral Reef Fish
Group living comes with a variety of tradeoffs associated with food acquisition and predator avoidance. Individuals in larger groups may experience less predation risk but greater intraspecific competition for food resources. In addition, individual animals within a species vary widely in metabolic requirements, such that some individuals must feed more than others. A possible outcome is that individuals with a higher metabolic rate might be less social, or prefer to associate with smaller groups of conspecifics as the costs of competition may outweigh the benefits of predator avoidance. We studied these issues in redbelly yellowtail fusilier, Caesio cuning, a gregarious coral reef fish. The metabolic rate of all individuals was estimated via intermittent flow respirometry. Fish were then tested for sociability in a rectangular arena, where they were given a choice between associating with groups of various sizes (2 fish versus 5 fish; 2 fish versus 0 fish; and 5 fish versus 0 fish). All fish were tested under all three experimental conditions. Trials were recorded and analysed using automated tracking software to determine the amount of time in proximity to each shoal size. Early analyses suggest that fish with a higher SMR prefer smaller groups, most likely due to a higher prioritisation of foraging and a reduction in competition. This effect may also interact within baseline sociability as opposed to preference for shoal of a particular size per se. These results provide insight into the costs and benefits of group behaviours and the mechanistic underpinnings of sociability and group formation
The Effect of Elevated CO2 on Swimming Performance and Schooling in a Coral Reef Fish Species
Atmospheric carbon dioxide is expected to more than double by the end of the century. The resulting changes in ocean chemistry will affect the behaviour, sensory systems and physiology of many fish species. How these effects may influence the schooling dynamics of gregarious fishes remains poorly understood. In the present study, we examined the influence of elevated CO2 on the swimming performance, maximum aerobic metabolic rate (MMR) and schooling behaviour in the redbelly yellowtail fusilier (Caesio cuning). Schools were acclimated to one of two CO2 treatments: control (400 µatm) or high-CO2 (1000 µatm) for two weeks. Schooling dynamics were tested in a 90L swim tunnel system, at four fixed flow speeds: 15, 30, 45 and 60 cm/s. Trials were video-recorded in three dimensions and analysed for school volume, density and shape, the position preference of each individual and their nearest neighbor distance. Individual swimming performance was assessed in terms of gait transition speed (Up-c ) and critical swimming speed (Ucrit) using a continuous acceleration test. MMR was tested using standard respirometry techniques. While individual swimming performance (Upc and Ucrit) was not impacted by elevated CO2 conditions, schools exhibited altered swimming behaviour, with reduced position shuffling and cohesion under elevated CO2 conditions. These results suggest that the tradeoffs of living in a group could be altered under projected future ocean conditions. Given that schooling behaviour is widespread among fishes as a tool for predator avoidance, these changes could have far-reaching consequences for a range of ecologically and economically important fish species
Maze design: size and number of choices impact fish performance in cognitive assays
While studies on fish cognition are increasing, consideration of how methodological details influence the ability to detect and measure performance is lagging. Here, in two separate experiments we compared latency to leave the start position, latency to make a decision, levels of participation and success rates (whether fish entered the rewarded chamber as first choice) across different physical designs. Experiments compared fish performance across 1) two sizes of T-mazes, large and standard, and a plus-maze, and 2) open choice arenas with either two or four doors. Fish in T-mazes with longer arms took longer to leave the start chamber and were less likely to participate in a trial than fish in T-mazes with shorter arms. The number of options, or complexity, in a maze significantly impacted success, but did not necessarily impact behavioural measures, and did not impact the number of fish that reached a chamber. Fish in the plus-maze had similar latencies to leave the start box and time to reach any chamber as fish in the same sized T-maze but exhibited lower overall success. Similarly, in an open choice arena, increasing the number of options – doors to potential reward chambers- resulted in lower probability of success. There was an influence of reward position in the choice arena, with rewarded chambers closest to the sides of the arena resulting in lower latencies to enter and higher probability of decision success. Together our results allow us to offer practical suggestions towards optimal maze design for studies of fish cognition
The archaeology of food surplus
Tracing flows of past food surplus challenges archaeologists to integrate a wide range of evidential strands for food acquisition, production and consumption, and to resist false dichotomies between ‘economic’ and ‘political’ accounts. Current approaches to the topic – variously illustrated by the papers brought together in this special issue – not only question traditional approaches to food surplus as a simple causal vector in social change (e.g. towards ‘complexity’); they also make the case that understanding how societies addressed common problems of shortage and abundance, climatic uncertainty and power relations in the past should inform discussion of future food security
