The periodic bounce of Born-Infeld theory of D3D3-branes is derived, and the BPS limit of infinite period is discussed as an example of tachyon condensation. The explicit bounce solution to the Born--Infeld action is interpreted as an unstable fundamental string stretched between the brane and its antibrane.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures. v2: minor changes, acknowledgement added; v3: explanations and references added. Prediction of the Feed Values of Maize Silage by Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy

    Get PDF
Until recently, feed evaluation of silages in official laboratories and feed factories was based on cutting date, chemical composition and the ammonia fraction. However, in vitro techniques have been developed based on rumen fluid or commercial enzymes to replace laborious, time-consuming and expensive digestibility experiments with animals. In this study the possibility of using near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) to predict the chemical composition and digestibility of maize silage was examined

The length of stay in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) following general anesthesia in adults is an important issue. A model, which can predict the results of PACU stays, could improve the utilization of PACU and operating room resources through a more efficient arrangement. The purpose of study was to compare the performance of neural network to logistic regression analysis using clinical sets of data from adult patients undergoing general anesthesia. An artificial neural network was trained with 409 clinical sets using backward error propagation and validated through independent testing of 183 records. Twenty-two inputs were used to find determinants and to predict categorical values. Logistic regression analysis was performed to provide a comparison. The neural network correctly predicted in 81.4% of situations and identified discriminating variables (intubated state, sex, neuromuscular blocker and intraoperative use of opioid), whereas the figure was 65.0% in logistic regression analysis. We concluded that the neural network could provide a useful predictive model for the optimization of limited resources. The neural network is a new alternative classifying method for developing a predictive paradigm, and it has a higher classifying performance compared to the logistic regression model

Rheological characterization for different phases of inulin extract from chicory roots, obtained through temperature reduction

Inulin is a functional food ingredient, generally employed as sugar or fat substitute in food systems. This ingredient can be found in several vegetal products, including chicory roots. As the solubility of inulin is susceptible to temperature changes, the product suffers a fractionalization resulting in two phases when cooled, originating a precipitated phase, more viscose, and a liquid phase, of lesser viscosity. The study of rheological properties of different phases of inulin extract is important for equipment designing, such as mixer and bombs. In this work, rheological behavior at three different temperatures (25; 40 and 50 ºC) was determined for liquid and precipitated phases of inulin liquid extract, extracted from chicory roots by hot water diffusion and cooled at two different temperatures (8 and -10 ºC), suffering phases separation. The precipitated phase was analyzed in two conditions: pure and with the addition of microencapsulating agents (maltodextrin and hydrolized starch). All of them presented a linear behavior, similar to that of the Plastics of Bingham. Some of them, however, were not an adequate fit to this model.

    Duality Symmetry in Momentum Frame

    Get PDF
Siegel's action is generalized to the D=2(p+1) (p even) dimensional space-time. The investigation of self-duality of chiral p-forms is extended to the momentum frame, using Siegel's action of chiral bosons in two space-time dimensions and its generalization in higher dimensions as examples. The whole procedure of investigation is realized in the momentum space which relates to the configuration space through the Fourier transformation of fields. These actions correspond to non-local Lagrangians in the momentum frame. The self-duality of them with respect to dualization of chiral fields is uncovered. The relationship between two self-dual tensors in momentum space, whose similar form appears in configuration space, plays an important role in the calculation, that is, its application realizes solving algebraically an integral equation.Comment: 11 pages, no figures, to appear in Phys. Spectroscopic Mass and Host-star Metallicity Measurements for Newly Discovered Microlensing Planet OGLE-2018-BLG-0740Lb

We report the discovery of the microlensing planet OGLE-2018-BLG-0740Lb. The planet is detected with a very strong signal of Δχ24630\Delta\chi^2\sim 4630, but the interpretation of the signal suffers from two types of degeneracies. One type is caused by the previously known close/wide degeneracy, and the other is caused by an ambiguity between two solutions, in which one solution requires to incorporate finite-source effects, while the other solution is consistent with a point-source interpretation. Although difficult to be firmly resolved based on only the photometric data, the degeneracy is resolved in strong favor of the point-source solution with the additional external information obtained from astrometric and spectroscopic observations. The small astrometric offset between the source and baseline object supports that the blend is the lens and this interpretation is further secured by the consistency of the spectroscopic distance estimate of the blend with the lensing parameters of the point-source solution. The estimated mass of the host is 1.0±0.1 M1.0\pm 0.1~M_\odot and the mass of the planet is 4.5±0.6 MJ4.5\pm 0.6~M_{\rm J} (close solution) or 4.8±0.6 MJ4.8\pm 0.6~M_{\rm J} (wide solution) and the lens is located at a distance of 3.2±0.53.2\pm 0.5~kpc. The bright nature of the lens, with I17.1I\sim 17.1 (V18.2V\sim 18.2), combined with its dominance of the observed flux suggest that radial-velocity (RV) follow-up observations of the lens can be done using high-resolution spectrometers mounted on large telescopes, e.g., VLT/ESPRESSO, and this can potentially not only measure the period and eccentricity of the planet but also probe for close-in planets. We estimate that the expected RV amplitude would be 60sini m s1\sim 60\sin i ~{\rm m~s}^{-1}.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 4 table
