    Cytogenetic differentiation between Palearctic and Nearctic populations of Chironomus plumosus L-(Diptera, Chironomidae)

    Submitted version uploaded has the title: Karyotype divergence between Palearctic and Nearctic populations of the Holarctic species Chironomus plumosus L. (Diptera, Chironomidae).Macrogeographic patterns of chromosomal banding sequences were studied in natural populations of the Holarctic species Chironomus plumosus. Of the 31 inversion sequences now known, 16 are endemic to the Palearctic, 7 are endemic to the Nearctic, and 8 are Holarctic sequences common to both zoogeographic zones. Differences in the sets of inversion sequences found on each continent, plus differing frequencies of Holarctic sequences, result in great overall divergence of karyotypes on the two continents. The karyotype of Nearctic C. plumosus differs from that of Palearctic populations primarily by the presence of a homozygous Nearctic sequence in arm A (n'plu A9), along with fixation (h'plu C2, h'plu E2, and h'plu F1), or high frequency (h'plu D2), of Holarctic sequences which are present but less frequent in the Palearctic. Although long continental isolation has led to great divergence of karyotypes on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, all populations of C. plumosus show sufficient cytogenetic similarity to constitute a single Holarctic species

    Ribosomal RNA genes and the B chromosome of Brachycome dichromosomatica

    Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with biotinylated rDNA revealed the presence of an rRNA gene cluster on both the A and B chromosomes of Brachycome dichromosomatica, an Australian native ephemeral plant of the arid regions of south-eastern Australia. This species contains only two pairs of A chromosomes and up to three B chromosomes. The regular attachment of the B chromosome to a nucleolus suggests that these ribosomal RNA genes are transcribed. Southern hybridization of DNA from 0B and +B plants digested with a variety of restriction enzymes indicates that the rRNA genes on the A and B chromosomes are the same in sequence and methylation status.Tamzin M Donald, Carolyn R Leach, Angela Clough and Jeremy N Timmi

    Chromosomal comparisons among and within populations of Simulium (Chirostilbia) pertinax (Diptera, Simuliidae)

    Chromosomal studies were carried on six larval populations of Simulium (Chirostilbia) pertinax from different locations in Brazil. Larvae were collected in the states of Paran谩, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio de Janeiro and S茫o Paulo. Polytene chromosome map comparisons within and among populations showed no differences in banding pattern, except for some limited polymorphism (secondary NOR and four band polymorphisms). There were no chromosomal variations associated with the resistance or susceptibility of the larvae to temephos. The chromosomal homosequentiality found among the six populations suggests that S. pertinax may be a monomorphic species
