    A mild and general protocol for the Pd(0)-catalyzed heteroannulation of o-bromoanilines and alkynes is described. Application of a Pd(0)/P(^tBu)_3 catalyst system enables the efficient coupling of o-bromoanilines at 60 °C, mitigating deleterious side reactions and enabling access to a broad range of useful unnatural tryptophans.     Estrogen dependent expression of the receptor tyrosine kinase axl in normal and malignant human breast

    Summary Background: Axl, a member of a family of receptor tyrosine kinases characterized by an extracellular domain resembling cell adhesion molecules and an intracellular conserved tyrosine kinase domain has been reported to induce cell proliferation and transformation. In mice, axl is expressed in the normal mammary gland and over-expressed in aggressive mammary tumors. Patients and methods: We have investigated the expression of axl immunohistochemically in 23 normal human breast samples and in 111 consecutive breast carcinomas. Expression of axl was correlated with tumour characteristics (lymph node involvement, stage, grade) and immunohistochemical expression of ER, PR, Ki-67 and c-erbB-2. Results: In normal tissue, axl localizes to the membrane of breast epithelial cells. Axl protein shows membrane associated staining in high correlation (P = 0.004) with the expression of the estrogen receptor (ER). Axl expression was found in a subset of breast carcinomas and was also correlated with high significance (P < 0.0001) with the presence of ER. Conclusion: Our results suggest that axl may serve as a mediator of estrogen stimulation preventing the completion of the breast epithelial life cycle and that estrogen induced axl expression may give a survival signal to cancerous cells, preventing them from dying through apoptosi

    Single shot phase contrast imaging using laser-produced Betatron x-ray beams

    Development of x-ray phase contrast imaging applications with a laboratory scale source have been limited by the long exposure time needed to obtain one image. We demonstrate, using the Betatron x-ray radiation produced when electrons are accelerated and wiggled in the laser-wakefield cavity, that a high quality phase contrast image of a complex object (here, a bee), located in air, can be obtained with a single laser shot. The Betatron x-ray source used in this proof of principle experiment has a source diameter of 1.7 microns and produces a synchrotron spectrum with critical energy E_c=12.3 +- 2.5 keV and 10^9 photons per shot in the whole spectrum.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

    Demonstration of the synchrotron-type spectrum of laser-produced Betatron radiation

    Betatron X-ray radiation in laser-plasma accelerators is produced when electrons are accelerated and wiggled in the laser-wakefield cavity. This femtosecond source, producing intense X-ray beams in the multi kiloelectronvolt range has been observed at different interaction regime using high power laser from 10 to 100 TW. However, none of the spectral measurement performed were at sufficient resolution, bandwidth and signal to noise ratio to precisely determine the shape of spectra with a single laser shot in order to avoid shot to shot fluctuations. In this letter, the Betatron radiation produced using a 80 TW laser is characterized by using a single photon counting method. We measure in single shot spectra from 8 to 21 keV with a resolution better than 350 eV. The results obtained are in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions and demonstrate the synchrotron type nature of this radiation mechanism. The critical energy is found to be Ec = 5.6 \pm 1 keV for our experimental conditions. In addition, the features of the source at this energy range open novel perspectives for applications in time-resolved X-ray science.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    AbstractBackgroundSurgical treatment of early-onset scoliosis has greatly developed in recent years. Early-onset scoliosis covers a variety of etiologies (idiopathic, neurologic, dystrophic, malformative, etc.) with onset before the age of 5 years. Progression and severity threaten respiratory development and may result in respiratory failure in adulthood. Many surgical techniques have been developed in recent years, aiming to protect spinal and thoracic development.Material and methodsPresent techniques are based on one of two main principles. The first consists in posterior distraction of the spine in its concavity (single growing rod, or vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib [VEPTR]), or on either side (dual rod); this requires iterative surgery, for lengthening, unless motorized using energy provided by a magnetic system. The second option is to use spinal growth force to lengthen the assembly; these techniques (Luque Trolley, Shilla), using a sliding assembly, are known as growth guidance.ResultsThese techniques are effective in controlling early scoliotic deformity, and to some extent restore spinal growth. However, they show a high rate of complications: infection, rod breakage, spinal fixation pull out and, above all, progressive spinal stiffness, reducing long-term efficacy. Respiratory gain is harder to assess, as thoracic expansion does not systematically improve respiratory function, particularly due to impaired compliance of the thoracic cage

    Experimental Observation of “Shadowing” in Optical Transition Radiation

    We report the observation of shadowing between two optical transition radiation (OTR) sources from a 205 MeV electron beam. The total optical intensity is measured as a function of the distance dd between the sources, covering the range 0<d<4LÎœ0 \lt d \lt 4L_{\nu}, where LÎœL_{\nu} is the formation length of the particles. Data show that the total optical intensity starts decreasing due to shadowing when dd approaches LÎœL_{\nu} until it becomes undetectable for very short distances d/LΜ→0d/L_{\nu} \rightarrow 0. A model based solely on interference between the two OTR sources is in good agreement with experimental data. To the knowledge of the authors this is the first systematic experimental observation of shadowing in OTR

    Exploring the Viability of Augmented Reality as a Supplementary Material for Learning Cell Biology and Photosynthesis for Grade 12 Students

    Augmented reality (AR) is one of the many emerging digital technologies that specializes in gaming, medicine, entertainment, and education. AR-assisted technologies have undergone studies and were claimed to provide a better learning experience for students and lecturers who integrate its features in modern-day classrooms. An example is Google Expeditions, a cost-effective and accessible alternative; however, further research may be needed on such applications, especially when used solely as a supplement. This study assesses AR\u27s effects on Grade 12 students\u27 academic performance and motivation when used as a supplemental learning material for cell biology and photosynthesis. Assessment scores between those who used augmented reality and those who did not reveal a greater improvement in academic performance of the former group. Furthermore, students reported through the Instructional Materials Motivation Survey (IMMS) that they were motivated by the AR tours used during the experiment. These findings point to the potential benefit of integrating AR-based supplementary materials to promote student learning and motivation
