    Intermittency study of charged particles generated in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN= 2.76 TeV\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}\text{= 2.76 TeV} using EPOS3

    Charged particle multiplicity fluctuations in Pb-Pb collisions are studied for the central events generated using EPOS3 (hydro and hydro+cascade) at sNN = 2.76 TeV\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}\text{ = 2.76 TeV}. Intermittency analysis is performed in the mid-rapidity region in two-dimensional (η\eta, ϕ\phi) phase space within the narrow transverse momentum (p_\rm{{T}}) bins in the low p_\rm{{T}}~region (p_\rm{{T}}~\leq~1.0~GeV/\textit{c}). Power-law scaling of the normalized factorial moments with the number of bins is not observed to be significant in any of the p_\rm{{T}}-bin. Scaling exponent ν\nu, deduced for a few p_\rm{{T}} bins is greater than that of the value 1.304, predicted for the second order phase-transition by the Ginzburg-Landau theory. The link in the notions of fractality is also studied. Fractal dimensions, DqD_{q} are observed to decrease with the order of the moment qq suggesting the multifractal nature of the particle generation in EPOS3.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

    Low Reynolds Number Numerical Simulation of the Aerodynamic Coefficients of a 3D Wing

    A low Reynolds number, three-dimensional CFD analysis is carried out for a finite flat plate wing using the commercial CFD code STAR CCM+. The six-aerodynamic force and moment components CL, CD, CM, CN, Cl, CY and their derivatives are computed at a Reynolds numbers of 3x105 by varying the pitch, roll and yaw angles about the quarter chord point. The computed results have been validated with experimental aerodynamic balance data when possible. The results indicate that roll and yaw angle affect the aerodynamic coefficients of the flat plate wing along with the pitch angle. The influence of roll and yaw angles on the six aerodynamics coefficients were found to be significant for high pitch angles specially 100 and 150. Stability derivatives have also been reported. This data is important for the design of MAVs and small UAVs and is currently perhaps not available in the open literature

    Effects of bio-inspired surface roughness on a swept back tapered NACA 4412 wing

    This paper presents the overall pros and cons of the effect of surface roughness elements over a NACA 4412 tapered, swept back half wing with a sweep angle of 30º and a dihedral angle of 5º. The tests were conducted at a Reynolds number of 4 × 105 in the IIUM Low Speed wind tunnel. Different roughness sizes and roughness locations were tested for a range of angle of attack. Lift, drag and pitching moment coefficients were measured for the smooth wing and with roughness elements. Surface roughness delays the stall angle and decreases the lift. The wing with the roughness elements located at 75% to 95% of mean chord from leading edge shows minimum drag and maximum lift compared to other locations. Significant increase in the pitching moment coefficient was found for flexible roughness elements. In case of rigid surface roughness, the effect on pitching moment is small

    Seroprevalence of markers of transfusion transmissible infections among blood donors at a tertiary care hospital blood bank: a 5 year retrospective study

     Background: Transfusion transmitted infections (TTIs) can be caused by various microorganisms present in the blood of apparently healthy donors. The recipient may get infected after being transfused with the unsafe blood. It is mandatory to screen the blood for HIV 1 and 2, HBV, HCV, Syphilis and Malaria. This study was undertaken to investigate the seroprevalance of Transfusion transmitted infections among blood donors at our tertiary care centre and to compare our study with other studies conducted at different hospitals of the country as well as outside.Methods: A retrospective review of blood donor records was made over a period of 5 years with effect from January 2014 to December 2018 at blood bank, department of Blood Transfusion and Immunohaematology, SKIMS, Soura, Srinagar. Both voluntary and replacement blood donors were selected after taking proper history and examination were included in the study. Serum samples were screened for HIV 1 & 2, HBV (HBsAg) and HCV using ELISA with 3rd generation kits.Results: A total of 56325 blood donors were screened. Out of total 55346 (98.2%) were males and 979 (1.73%) were females. Among them 38969 (69.1%) were replacement donors and 17356 (30.8%) were voluntary donors. The seroprevalance of HBV (HBsAg), HCV and HIV 1and 2 was 0.24%, 0.17% and 0.01% respectively and overall seroprevalance of TTIs was 0.43%.Conclusions: Continuous improvement and implementation of newer techniques like NAT and chemilumenescence for testing of blood for TTIs will reduce the risk of acquiring these infections.lanc

    Normalized factorial moments of spatial distributions of particles in high multiplicity events: A Toy model study

    Scaling behavior of normalized factorial moments (FqF_{q}) of spatial distributions of the particles comprising a system may be studied to probe and to determine its characteristics. In heavy-ion collisions at ultra-relativistic energies, a strongly interacting complex system of quarks and gluons is created. The nature of the system created and multi particle production mechanism in these collisions is predicted to be revealed by the study of normalized factorial moments (FqF_{{\rm{q}}}) as function of various parameters. In this work, observations from the Toy model study of the scaling behavior of FqF_{{\rm{q}}} moments, resilience of these moments to detector efficiencies and sensitivity towards fluctuations in the system will be presented.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figure

    The Diagnostic Value of Biochemical Cardiac Markers in Acute Myocardial Infarction

    Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. The role of cardiac markers in the diagnosis, risk stratification, and treatment of patients with chest pain is vital. Patients with elevated cardiac troponin levels but negative CK-MB who were formerly diagnosed with unstable angina or minor myocardial injury are now reclassified as non–ST-segment elevation MI (NSTEMI) even in the absence of diagnostic ECG changes. CK-MB is both a sensitive and specific marker for myocardial infarction. Cardiac troponin T is a cardio-specific, highly sensitive marker for myocardial damage. Cardiac troponin I is a contractile protein exclusively present in the cardiac muscle. The absolute cardiospecificity of cTnI allows the diagnosis of myocardial infarction distinct from muscle lesions and non-cardiac surgery. In 2000, the European Society of Cardiology and the American College of Cardiology redefined AMI with a particular advocacy on troponin. The 2002/2007 American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) Guideline Update for the management of these patients strongly recommend to include cTnI. Specifically, with rare exception, the diagnosis cannot be made in the absence of elevated biomarkers of cardiac injury

    Radiation induced tumor lysis syndrome in patients with leukemia

    Tumour lysis syndrome is a catastrophic complica­lion of treatment of certain neoplasms. It is usually seen with the tumours that have high growth fractions, increased bulk and extreme sensitivity to cytotoxic therapy. Most commonly it occurs in association with hematologic malignancies such as lymphomas and leukaemias. Rarely it has been observed with solid tumours like small cell lung cancer, seminoma and carcinoma of the breast. The syndrome develops due to massive cell lysis occurring within a few hours to a few days of starting the cytotoxic therapy. It is characterized by hyperuricemia, hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia and hypocalcaemia. Acute renal failure, cardiac arrhyth­mias and sudden death may occur. Tumour lysis syndrome has hitherto not been reported as a complica­lion of radiotherapy only. We recently observed a patient with a diagnosis of chronic myeloid leukaemia who received splenic irradiation for massive splenomegaly and developed full-blown tumour lysis syndrome.     Pilonidal sinus: excision and primary closure over suction drain and its outcome

    Background: Pilonidal sinus is a chronic inflammatory disease predominantly involving Sacrococcygeal region. Despite advances in medical sciences, management of pilonidal disease is still not well defined. Treatment varies from simple techniques to more sophisticated surgeries with their own pros and cons. Methods: This prospective observational study comprised of forty-two patients who underwent the surgery for pilonidal sinus as per the procedure described. This study was carried from 1 May 2019 till 30 November 2022. Median age of the patients was 24.5 years, ranging between 19-32 years. Sinus discharge was the predominant symptom of our study population with 34 patients (80.94%) complaining of same. Results: Mean operative time was 54 minutes with a range of 45-78 minutes. Average hospital stay was 1.8 days though it ranged from 1 to 3 days. Five patients (11.90%) developed seroma while four patients (9.52%) had superficial wound site infection. We had two recurrences (4.76%) over the follow-up period of 1 year. Conclusions: Excision and primary closure of the pilonidal disease is effective with comparable complication rates and shorter time off work. The surgery can be easily performed
