Provision, Interpretation and Effects of Feedback in Reputation Systems.

This dissertation addresses three questions that arise out of the voluntary and subjective provision of feedback and its subjective interpretation. The first study is an experimental investigation of a mechanism designed to give buyers incentives for feedback provision. It starts from the intuition that if buyers' feedback giving histories are made available to sellers, reputation effects will arise on the buyer side and act as incentives for buyers to provide more feedback. In a controlled laboratory experiment I examined whether this mechanism had the desired effects on buyer and seller behavior, and found that the mechanism had mixed success. It resulted in higher levels of feedback, but not higher levels of trust, trustworthiness or gains from trade. In the second study, I conducted an empirical analysis of transaction and feedback data from eBay, to understand the impact of a negative feedback in the seller’s profile on his own future behavior, and behavior of the buyers he gets matched with. I found evidence that after sellers got negative feedbacks; they were less likely to list items again, at least for a while. For sellers who continued to sell, the presence of a negative feedback in the recent past made buyers more willing to give another negative feedback. In the third study, I examined the effect of culture on behavior in Reputation Systems. In a controlled laboratory experiment using student subjects having two different nationalities, I found that the differences in trust and trustworthiness between the two groups prevailed in spite of the reputation system. I also found that there were systematic differences in how people from the two groups interpreted comparable reputation profiles.Ph.D.InformationUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. Mental Wellbeing and Self-reported Symptoms of Reproductive Tract Infections among Girls: Findings from a Cross-sectional Study in an Indian Slum

This study examined the self-reported mental wellbeing among slum-dwelling adolescents in Western India and asked whether adolescent postmenarcheal girls’ mental wellbeing and self-reported symptoms suggestive of reproductive tract infections (RTIs) were associated. A sub-section of a cross-sectional personal interview survey among unmarried 10–18-year-old adolescents (n= 85) in a slum in the city of Nashik was analyzed. Logistic regression models were used to assess the associations between sociodemographic variables, physical health indicators, and adolescent postmenarcheal girls’ mental wellbeing. Nearly every other postmenarcheal girl reported having experienced symptoms suggestive of RTIs during the last twelve months. Adolescent postmenarcheal girls’ mental health and some aspects of somatic health appear to be closely interrelated. Understanding the relationship between adolescent mental wellbeing and reproductive health in low-income countries requires further investigation. Health service development in growing informal urban agglomerations in India and beyond should provide combined mental and reproductive health services for adolescents. &nbsp

A Study of Depression and Quality of Life in Patients of Lichen Planus

The precise cause of lichen planus is unknown, but the disease seems to be immunologically mediated. It is a psychocutaneous disorder. Due to scarcity of Indian studies in this field, we decided to study in patients of lichen planus the prevalence of depression and quality of life with comparison of the same in both the genders. Patients diagnosed as having lichen planus by consultant dermatologist were enrolled after informed consent and ethics approval. 45 patients were screened, of which 35 who satisfied the criteria were taken up for the study. A semistructured proforma was designed to collect the necessary information with administration of dermatology life quality index and Beck’s depression inventory. While 25% were depressed with females being more affected than males, quality of life was impaired in more than 90% patients. Impairment was maximum due to symptoms and illness feelings, disturbed daily activities, or work and time consumption in treatment. There was a strong association between depression and impairment in quality of life in both the genders. This study helps in early identification of psychological problems in lichen planus patients and in planning their future course of management, hence reducing the lack of productivity and improving the prognosis and quality of life

Review of the cultivation program within the National Alliance for Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts

The cultivation efforts within the National Alliance for Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts (NAABB)were developed to provide four major goals for the consortium, which included biomass production for downstream experimentation, development of new assessment tools for cultivation, development of new cultivation reactor technologies, and development of methods for robust cultivation. The NAABB consortium test beds produced over 1500 kg of biomass for downstream processing. The biomass production included a number of model production strains, but also took into production some of the more promising strains found through the prospecting efforts of the consortium. Cultivation efforts at large scale are intensive and costly, therefore the consortium developed tools and models to assess the productivity of strains under various environmental conditions, at lab scale, and validated these against scaled outdoor production systems. Two new pond-based bioreactor designs were tested for their ability to minimize energy consumption while maintaining, and even exceeding, the productivity of algae cultivation compared to traditional systems. Also, molecular markers were developed for quality control and to facilitate detection of bacterial communities associated with cultivated algal species, including the Chlorella spp. pathogen, Vampirovibrio chlorellavorus, which was identified in at least two test site locations in Arizona and New Mexico. Finally, the consortium worked on understanding methods to utilize compromised municipal waste water streams for cultivation. This review provides an overview of the cultivation methods and tools developed by the NAABB consortium to produce algae biomass, in robust low energy systems, for biofuel production
