    New Horizons for a Theory of Epistemic Modals

    ABSTRACTRecent debate over the semantics and pragmatics of epistemic modals has focused on intuitions about cross-contextual truth-value assessments. In this paper, we advocate a different approach to evaluating theories of epistemic modals. Our strategy focuses on judgments of the incompatibility of two different epistemic possibility claims, or two different truth value assessments of a single epistemic possibility claim. We subject the predictions of existing theories to empirical scrutiny, and argue that existing contextualist and relativist theories are unable to account for the full pattern of observed judgments. As a way of illustrating the theoretical upshot of these results, we conclude by developing a novel theory of epistemic modals that is able to predict the results

    Separable Hamiltonian Neural Networks

    The modelling of dynamical systems from discrete observations is a challenge faced by modern scientific and engineering data systems. Hamiltonian systems are one such fundamental and ubiquitous class of dynamical systems. Hamiltonian neural networks are state-of-the-art models that unsupervised-ly regress the Hamiltonian of a dynamical system from discrete observations of its vector field under the learning bias of Hamilton's equations. Yet Hamiltonian dynamics are often complicated, especially in higher dimensions where the state space of the Hamiltonian system is large relative to the number of samples. A recently discovered remedy to alleviate the complexity between state variables in the state space is to leverage the additive separability of the Hamiltonian system and embed that additive separability into the Hamiltonian neural network. Following the nomenclature of physics-informed machine learning, we propose three separable Hamiltonian neural networks. These models embed additive separability within Hamiltonian neural networks. The first model uses additive separability to quadratically scale the amount of data for training Hamiltonian neural networks. The second model embeds additive separability within the loss function of the Hamiltonian neural network. The third model embeds additive separability through the architecture of the Hamiltonian neural network using conjoined multilayer perceptions. We empirically compare the three models against state-of-the-art Hamiltonian neural networks, and demonstrate that the separable Hamiltonian neural networks, which alleviate complexity between the state variables, are more effective at regressing the Hamiltonian and its vector field.Comment: 11 page

By employing constraints expressed in XCONCUR-CL, this procedure can be performed lossless, i.e., without losing information, especially with regard to the nesting of elements that belong to multiple annotation layers. This article describes how different types of linguistic corpora can be transformed using specialised tools, and how constraint rules can be applied to the resulting multi-rooted trees to add an additional level of validation

    Affordable Rotating Fluid Demonstrations for Geoscience Education: The DIYnamics Project

    Demonstrations using rotating tanks of fluid can help demystify otherwise counterintuitive behaviors of atmospheric, oceanic, and planetary interior fluid motions. But the expense and complicated assembly of existing rotating table platforms limit their appeal for many schools, especially those below the university level. Here, we introduce Do-It-Yourself Dynamics (DIYnamics), a project developing extremely low-cost rotating tank platforms and accompanying teaching materials. The devices can be assembled in a few minutes from household items, all available for purchase online. Ordering, assembly, and operation instructions are available on the DIYnamics website. Videos using these and other rotating tables to teach specific concepts such as baroclinic instability are available on the DIYnamics YouTube channel—including some in Spanish. The devices, lesson plans, and demonstrations have been successfully piloted at multiple middle schools, in a university course, and at public science outreach events. These uses to date convince us of the DIYnamics materials’ pedagogical value for instructors from well-versed university professors to K–12 science teachers with little background in fluid dynamics

    Potential role of doravirine for the treatment of HIV-1-infected persons with transmitted drug resistance

    Background: Doravirine has a unique resistance profile but how this profile might increase its usefulness beyond first-line therapy in persons with susceptible viruses has not been well studied. We sought to determine scenarios in which doravirine would retain activity against isolates from ART-naïve persons with transmitted drug resistance (TDR) and to identify gaps in available doravirine susceptibility data. Methods: We analyzed published in vitro doravirine susceptibility data and applied the results to 42,535 RT sequences from ART-naïve persons published between 2017 and 2021. NNRTI drug resistance mutations (DRMs) were defined as those with a Stanford HIV Drug Resistance Database doravirine penalty score either alone or in combination with other mutations. Results: V106A, Y188L, F227C/L, M230L, and Y318F were associated with the greatest reductions in doravirine susceptibility. However, several NNRTI DRMs and DRM combinations lacking these canonical resistance mutations had > tenfold reduced susceptibility including G190E, one isolate with G190S, three isolates with L100I + K103N, one isolate with K103N + P225H, and isolates with L100I + K103N + V108I and K101E + Y181C + G190A. Of the 42,535 ART-naïve sequences, 3,374 (7.9%) contained a NNRTI DRM of which 2,788 (82.6%) contained 1 DRM (n = 33 distinct mutations), 426 (12.6%) contained 2 DRMs (79 distinct pairs of mutations), and 143 (4.2%) contained ≥ 3 DRMs (86 distinct mutation patterns). Among the 2,788 sequences with one DRM, 112 (4.0%) were associated with ≥ 3.0-fold reduced doravirine susceptibility while 2,625 (94.2%) were associated with < 3.0-fold reduced susceptibility. Data were not available for individual NNRTI DRMs in 51 sequences (1.8%). Among the 426 sequences with two NNRTI DRMs, 180 (42.3%) were associated with ≥ 3.0 fold reduced doravirine susceptibility while just 32 (7.5%) had < 3.0 fold reduced susceptibility. Data were not available for 214 (50.2%) sequences containing two NNRTI DRMs. Conclusions: First-line therapy containing doravirine plus two NRTIs is expected to be effective in treating most persons with TDR as more than 80% of TDR sequences had a single NNRTI DRM and as more than 90% with a single DRM were expected to be susceptible to doravirine. However, caution is required for the use of doravirine in persons with more than one NNRTI DRM even if none of the DRMs are canonical doravirine-resistance mutations. © 2023, The Author(s)

    Educating and Debating Social and Political Issues in the Naperville Lyceum

    This historical research responds to a call from other scholars to allow thetopics discussed in the lyceum of the nineteenth century to shed light onthe social consciousness of the frontier settlements of the era. The recentdiscovery of the “Proceedings of the Naperville Lyceum” (1836-1843)provided the means to do this. Since political topics were clearly central tothe Naperville Lyceum members, this research focused on those items. Itis revealing that lyceum topics in this location were not self-absorbed. Thedebated topics included several global issues and did not simplychampion the American status quo. It suggests that the frontier settlers ofNaperville were concerned with concerns of justice as citizens of acosmopolitan world, one in which they valued self-governance. The studyfurther reveals how some topics have continued to be politically relevantfor more than 180 years since the Naperville Lyceum began.
