    tRNA Profiling of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Exosome

    Background: Exosomes have great potential in regenerative medicine through the transfer of their bioactive cargos, such as RNA. tRF RNA and tiRNA are tRNAderived non-coding RNA. Here, we sought to identify the tRF/tiRNA profile in human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) exosomes. Methods: Bone marrow hMSCs were cultured with/without osteogenic differentiation medium and exosomes were harvested. RNA was extracted from: 1) control cells (Cell-NT); 2) control exosomes (EXO-NT); 3) differentiated cells (Cell-OM); 4) exosomes produced by differentiated cells (EXO-OM). RNA was sequenced to profile the small RNA with a focus on tRF/tiRNA. Results: tRF/tiRNA was highly enriched in hMSC exosomes. Less diversity was seen in the tRF/tiRNA profile in exosomes than that in parent cells. Selective tRF/tiRNA were packed into MSC exosomes and their profile is dependent on the cell maturation status. Conclusions: Our results suggest that tRF/tiRNA may play a role in mediating the function of exosomes in tissue regeneration

    Building Resilience through Culturally Grounded Practices in Clinical Psychology and Higher Education

    There is no “one size fits all” approach when it comes to the process of healing, particularly for individuals who are continuously affected by the many barriers and impacts of systemic oppres- sion. This reality demands the sustained development of a praxis rooted in trauma-informed and culturally grounded care so that we may better serve our most-impacted communities (such as Black, Indigenous and People of Color [BIPOC], disability, queer, and survivor communities). As practitioners in the fields of Clinical Psychology and Higher Education, we engage in cross-disciplinary analysis so that we may amplify and share our tools for collective healing. We highlight the importance of sup- porting client and student development through multisystemic and resilience-oriented frameworks. Specifically, we discuss the implications of the Minority Stress Model (Meyer, 2003) and Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory (1979) in serving our communities more effectively to enhance positive clinical and academic outcomes

    Effective Accountability Mechanisms for New York State's English Language Learners

    In September 2011, the New York State Department of Education convened a School and District Accountability Think Tank to provide public input regarding the creation of a second generation educational accountability system for the State's Elementary and Secondary Education Act waiver application. The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) and Advocates for Children of New York (AFC) participated in the Think Tank and submitted a set of comprehensive recommendations regarding sound accountability practices for English Language Learners (ELLs). In May 2012, the U.S. Department of Education granted New York's waiver application, which included several of AALDEF's and AFC's recommendations. We believe our ELL accountability recommendations have relevance beyond the ESEA waiver, and now release this paper which sets forth key principles for a sound ELL accountability framework in New York State

    Teacher learning and professional development in school-university partnership: How do mentors learn?

    This study investigates teacher learning and professional development in school-university partnership in Myanmar. This study explores teacher learning and professional development through engaging in a school-university partnership through mentoring activity. Research studies have shown mentoring can improve teachers' learning and professional development (Hargreaves & Fullan, 2000). A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was applied in this study. Participants were 120 schoolteachers in the quantitative part while 4 participants were interviewed. This study aimed to answer how the impact of school-university partnership on teacher learning and professional development can be understood. To answer this research question, two groups of schoolteachers (mentor and non-mentors) and three groups of teachers based on communication level with student teachers were compared. The results showed that teachers who had mentoring experiences improved their professional skills and competencies more than non-mentor teachers mainly in the areas: pedagogical content knowledge, knowledge about learners' behaviours and characteristics and cross-curricular skills. Furthermore, teachers who had intensive communication with student teachers showed higher mean values in self-confidence, enjoyment in teaching and reflection on teaching practices and feeling like a responsible person in education. Findings from the qualitative part showed that teachers learned these skills and competencies through intensive collaborative activities such as discussing teaching and learning, guiding student teachers in their classroom management and planning a lesson and having a friendly conversation with them. Overall, this study confirms that engaging in school-university partnership through mentoring enhances mentors develop their self-confidence, and enjoyment in teaching as well as their professional knowledge and skills

    The Impact of the Global Economic Crisis on Cambodia

    We numerically examine the impact of the global economic crisis on the Cambodian garment exports as well as its economy by using the conventional CGE model. A seminal aspect of the paper is that we have successfully estimated the curvature of the CET and CES production functions for the Cambodian economy, by using the time series regression method. One of our most striking results indicates that the welfare cost of the impact of the crisis at least reaches 281 million US dollars, thus resulting in a 0.3 percent decrease in GDP with 20.8 thousand direct job losses in the garment industry. Our simulation results also show that the currently ongoing policy in Cambodia only reduces the negative impact of the crisis by 32 million US dollars, and we propose an expansion of the government budget of 304 million US dollars, in order to neutralize the negative impact of the global economic crisis on the Cambodian economy.Cambodia, Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model, Global Economic Crisis, Simulation

    A covariant multiple scattering series for elastic projectile-target scattering

    A covariant formulation of the multiple scattering series for the optical potential is presented. The case of a scalar nucleon interacting with a spin zero isospin zero A-body target through meson exchange, is considered. It is shown that a covariant equation for the projectile-target t-matrix can be obtained which sums the ladder and crossed ladder diagrams efficiently. From this equation, a multiple scattering series for the optical potential is derived, and it is shown that in the impulse approximation, the two-body t-matrix associated with the first order optical potential is the one in which one particle is kept on mass-shell. The meaning of various terms in the multiple scattering series is given. The construction of the first-order optical potential for elastic scattering calculations is described

    A design-aware test code approach for code writing problem in Java programming learning assistant system

    To advance Java programming educations, we have developed the web-based Java programming learning assistant system (JPLAS) that provides the code writing problem. This problem asks a student to write a source code for a given assignment, where the correctness is verified by running the test code on JUnit. In this paper, we propose a design-aware test code approach for the code writing problem. The design-aware test code tests any important method in the model source code that has the advisable design for the assignment. Thus, by writing a code that can pass it, a student is expected to implement the code with the proper classes/methods in the model code. In evaluations of the proposal, all the students could complete highly qualitative codes for five graph algorithms using the design-aware test codes, where the code quality metrics were measured by metrics plugin for Eclipse
