This study explores the various types of errors apparent in Higher Secondary level students’ writings due to which they fail to score satisfactorily in English examination. The aim of this research is to improve the writing skills of Bangladeshi secondary level learners through identification and analysis of the common errors their written corpus contains. Action research procedure (plan, act, observe, reflect and revise) has been used for this research. The answer scripts of 100 Higher Secondary level students were selected for data collection. The data was then analyzed following the traditional error analysis procedure of error identification, classification, explanation and evaluation. The result of the analysis reflects the various types of interlingual and intralingual or developmental errors learners make in their writing tasks. Based on the findings, eight teachers of those 100 students were interviewed to seek the answers to the questions as to why learners make such errors in spite of twelve years of formal education and what can be done to improve their writing skill. This research ends with some recommendations for effective teaching of the different aspects of writing

Temporary labour migration from Bangladesh to the Middle East is commonplace, but workers are often at risk of being exploited because they don't speak the local language or lack basic skills. The Government of Bangladesh offers training but in the past the time and cost commitments involved have been prohibitive for many aspiring migrants. Here Ayesha Khanom and Shakhwatul Islam discuss how m/e-learning platforms are making the training more accessible to all citizens, particularly women

HR Governance for Sustainable Human Resource Development: Evidence from Private Sector of Bangladesh

    Get PDF
HR governance is the practice of making effective decisions regarding the human resources of the organization and the efficient controlling of them. It is interrelated with establishing HR policies, continuous monitoring of their proper implementation and governing the body of an organization. This study explores the HR governance practice of the private sector in Bangladesh and its impact on organization’s sustainable human resource development. To investigate this scenario, sample size of 200 from five manufacturing industries and three service industries both sectors were selected to conduct a survey through floating a structured questionnaire on target employees. Here, six independent variables talent management, consolidated HR policy, HR risk management, employee development, compensation benefits, employee welfare and one dependent variable sustainable human resource development have been identified to conduct the regression analysis. The result shows that the f-test value = 34.400 which implies that the model is statistically significant and valid. The significance level of the employee development and compensation benefits at (0.000) which have positive impact on sustainable human resource development. On the contrary, the talent management is insignificant at (0.006) and consecutively consolidated HR policy (0.019), HR risk management (0.063) and employee welfare (0.106). The regression model illustrates that the private sector of Bangladesh is going to be comparatively more concern about the employee development and compensation management but others variables have insignificant but positive relationship for the increasing of sustainable human resource development. Moreover, this study attempts to provide the conceptual and pragmatic insight of the HR governance practices in the private sector of Bangladesh; this might help to emerge new corridors for future research. Keywords: HR governance, talent management, consolidated HR policy, HR risk management and sustainable human resource development

The Unemployment Agenda in Mental Health Services: The Therapist's Perspective

    Get PDF
In recent years public policy and research has placed unemployment at the forefront of designing and evaluating mental health services, which led to support for development of the service model, Increasing Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT). Most of the research that has informed this shift has explored the relationship between mental health and unemployment from a positivist framework, which has provided a focus on describing the psychological symptoms that people experience as a result of unemployment. However, this research has been criticised for its limitation in ignoring the causes and the context of unemployment. The aim of the study was to explore the impact of the change in emphasis on unemployment for therapists practice, the ideas they draw on to inform their work, and how therapists manage any potential conflicts. A critical realist approach was used to explore these aims with seven therapists working in IAPT services. In drawing on a critical realist approach, the study was interested in exploring the relationship between a number of phenomena: materiality (e.g. the reality of the nature of available employment), institutional practices (e.g. government policies) and social discourses (e.g. therapists understanding of the causes of unemployment). The data from the interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. The first theme indicated that the service context raised a number of challenges for therapists; theme two described therapists opposition to the employment agenda; theme three explained how therapists managed conflicts between their personal and professional perspectives by using the employment agenda minimally and complying with the demands on an administrative level; and, finally, theme four described the approaches that therapists drew on to formulate client’s difficulties with employment and its implications. The data was interpreted using psychoanalytic and critical ideas in order understanding how therapists’ experienced and responded to the unemployment agenda of IAPT service (Layton, 2009). The data was analysed by drawing on mechanisms of splitting, denial and repression to explain societies and mental health services, compliance, acceptance and support for political discourses that disadvantage the most vulnerable within society (Layton, 2009). The implications of the findings are discussed for practice, research, training and policy

Implementation of Pseudo-Random Number Generator Using LFSR

Linear Feedback Shift Registers (LFSR) play a vital role to provide cybersecurity for the data communication system. LFSR is a shift register where the input is linear of its previous states. The most important application of LFSR is the device’s ability to generate a pseudo-random sequence of values that are used in encryption and decryption to secure personal data. Moreover, LFSR is used in Cyclic Redundancy Check Calculations (CRC) which can help to detect errors and corruption in data communications as LFSR feedback values can be modified. The main objective of the research is to generate the pseudo-random sequence of values in 3-bit, 4-bit, and 8-bit using the multiple registers with XOR as different taps selection. In the research, we used D(Data) flip flops and XOR alternative taps to identify the difference in the values for different arrangements in circuit diagrams using the software Quartus. After the simulation, we test the circuit on the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) board to check the generated binary random number displaying the LED “on” or in “off” state

Background: Modern telecommunication infrastructure enables bridging of the digital divide between rural and urban healthcare services, promoting the provision of suitable medical care and support. Thus far, there has been some positive impacts to applying mobile health (m-Health) solutions, but their full potential in relation to cloud computing has is yet to be realised. It is imperative to develop an innovative approach for addressing the digital divide in a context of developing country. Method: Adopting a design science research approach (DSR), this study describes an innovative m-Health solution utilising cloud computing that enables healthcare professionals and women in rural areas to achieve comprehensive maternal healthcare support. We developed the solution framework through iterative prototyping with stakeholders’ participation, and evaluated the design using focus groups. Results: The cloud-based solution was positively evaluated as supporting healthcare professionals and service providers. It was perceived to help provide a virtual presence for evaluating and diagnosing expectant mothers’ critical healthcare data, medical history, and in providing necessary service support in a virtual clinic environment. Conclusions: The new application offers benefits to target stakeholders enabling a new practice-based paradigm applicable in other healthcare management. We demonstrated utilities to address target problems as well as the mechanism propositions for meeting the information exchange demand for better realisation of practical needs of the end users. The experiment was carried out to study the impacts of fish sanctuaries on the production and diversity of plankton in beels of haor region at Mithamain Upazila of Kishoreganj district in Bangladesh during July 2004 to June 2005. A total of 75 (60 phyto and 15 zooplankton) and 74 (59 phyto and 15 zooplankton) genera of plankton were recorded in T-1 and T-2 (with sanctuary) respectively while only 50 (39 phyto and 11 zooplankton) genera were obtained in T-3 (control). Chlorophyceae and Copepoda were the most dominant group of phytoplankton and zooplankton respectively in all the treatments. The total phytoplankton numbers were found to range from 5472 to 35,833 cells/l and 5250 to 40,472 cells/l and total zooplankton from 667 to 1722 cells/l and 611 to 1667 cells/l in T-1 and T-2 respectively in sanctuary sites whereas the ranges of phytoplankton and zooplankton in the control site were 1778 to 29,333 cells/l and 56 to 1056 cells/l respectively. The maximum phytoplankton and zooplankton were recorded during winter season in all the treatments. The ranges of total plankton were 6194 to 37,500 cells/l, 6028 to 41,806 cells/l and 1889 to 29,444 cells/l in T-1, T-2 and T-3 respectively. The phytoplankton, zooplankton and total plankton recorded in treatments with sanctuary were significantly higher (p<0.5) than the treatment without sanctuary (control) indicating positive impacts of sanctuaries on the production of plankton. Between two treatments of fish sanctuaries the total plankton populations were comparatively higher in T-2 than T-1

Information and communication technology is advancing rapidly and has led to the fundamental changes in the world community. Activities, jobs, skills, cultures, needs etc. have been impressed and transformed by this technology. Undoubtedly, entrepreneurship has a major role in the development of these technologies; however, these technologies also influence the entrepreneurship and in other words, have created a modern entrepreneurship. In this regard, information and communications are two basic required tools for every entrepreneurial activity. Today, information technology has spread widely in the community and has integrated into all aspects of life. Entrepreneurship is the process of creating something new by spending a lot of time and effort and accepting financial, emotional and social risks to gain financial resources, job satisfaction and autonomy. In fact, information technology is considered as the driving force by which, in addition to mobilizing the job and employment wheels, leads to the economic growth and dynamics of community and the creation of a new kind of economy, that is called knowledge-based economy. This article has tried to analyze the concepts of information and communication technology and entrepreneurship and also has considered the interaction of information technology and entrepreneurship
