It is generally known to everone that reading is a skill that comes from experience and needs to be constantly improved through different types of reading material. But that efficient reading involves many skill that need to be fostered in a classroom is a new idea. Mapping Annual Riparian Water Use Based on the Single-Satellite-Scene Approach

The accurate estimation of water use by groundwater-dependent riparian vegetation is of great importance to sustainable water resource management in arid/semi-arid regions. Remote sensing methods can be effective in this regard, as they capture the inherent spatial variability in riparian ecosystems. The single-satellite-scene (SSS) method uses a derivation of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from a single space-borne image during the peak growing season and minimal ground-based meteorological data to estimate the annual riparian water use on a distributed basis. This method was applied to a riparian ecosystem dominated by tamarisk along a section of the lower Colorado River in southern California. The results were compared against the estimates of a previously validated remotely sensed energy balance model for the year 2008 at two different spatial scales. A pixel-wide comparison showed good correlation (R2 = 0.86), with a mean residual error of less than 104 mm·year-1 (18%). This error reduced to less than 95 mm·year-1 (15%) when larger areas were used in comparisons. In addition, the accuracy improved significantly when areas with no and low vegetation cover were excluded from the analysis. The SSS method was then applied to estimate the riparian water use for a 23-year period (1988–2010). The average annual water use over this period was 748 mm·year-1 for the entire study area, with large spatial variability depending on vegetation density. Comparisons with two independent water use estimates showed significant differences. The MODIS evapotranspiration product (MOD16) was 82% smaller, and the crop-coefficient approach employed by the US Bureau of Reclamation was 96% larger, than that from the SSS method on average

Risk Factors for Construction Workforce Safety towards Sustainability

This research article is based on the identification of safety risk factors associated with construction projects in Pakistan related with the China-Pakistan economic corridor (CPEC). In this paper, four construction sites have been targeted from Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Baluchistan province of Pakistan. The research was based on quantitative mode where the questionnaire survey was adopted for data collection and analysed statistically. The targeted respondents were 400 CPEC construction workforces from four different targeted sites in Pakistan. The collected data was analysed using descriptive statistical methods of Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) 23.0 software. According to the findings, it has been specified that the respondents from all four targeted construction sites in Pakistan has considered three major safety risk factors such as administrative, personal protective equipment (PPE) and workforce safety. Risk factors for administrative is between 1.06 and 2.65 (low level to moderate level), for PPE is between 1.06 and 2.65 (low level to moderate level) and for workforce safety is between 2.4 and 3.60 (moderate level to high Level). Meanwhile, the safety experts have been indicated the lack of proper training &amp; PPE equipment’s, falling from height and falling object hazards are as the major cause of injuries at Pakistani construction sites related with CPEC projects. The findings of this study will be the catalyst for the CPEC projects in Pakistan to minimize the safety and health concern among construction industry workforce

Assessment and Development of Remotely Sensed Evapotranspiration Modeling Approaches

Remote sensing has been a promising approach to extracting distributed evapotranspiration (ET) information at varying spatial and temporal scales. Performances of several vegetation index (VI) based and remotely sensed surface energy balance (RSEB) models were evaluated to identify simple and accurate models and apply them to study ET variations from field to regional scales. A simple VI model using a single Landsat image to estimate annual ET was evaluated and successfully captured inter-annual riparian ET variations along a section of the Colorado River, U.S. The study showed the applicability of a simple and accurate approach for annual ET estimation with fewer data and resources. A modeling framework was developed to derive daily time series of ET maps using a RSEB model, satellite imagery, and ground-based weather data. The daily and annual ET maps obtained from the modeling framework successfully captured spatial and temporal ET variations across Oklahoma, U.S. The model also identified the regions that are more susceptible to droughts. Finally, five RSEB models were evaluated for their performance in estimating daily ET of winter wheat under variable grazing and tillage practices in central Oklahoma. The surface energy balance algorithm for land (SEBAL) had the best agreement whit eddy covariance estimates. The daily ET estimates from SEBAL captured the field-scale ET variations within grazing/tillage managements. All studies conducted based on VI and RSEB models over different land covers and spatial/temporal scales identified advantages and limitations of models and developed a framework to construct time series of ET maps, which has a wide range of applications

Data Augmentation Based Malware Detection using Convolutional Neural Networks

Recently, cyber-attacks have been extensively seen due to the everlasting increase of malware in the cyber world. These attacks cause irreversible damage not only to end-users but also to corporate computer systems. Ransomware attacks such as WannaCry and Petya specifically targets to make critical infrastructures such as airports and rendered operational processes inoperable. Hence, it has attracted increasing attention in terms of volume, versatility, and intricacy. The most important feature of this type of malware is that they change shape as they propagate from one computer to another. Since standard signature-based detection software fails to identify this type of malware because they have different characteristics on each contaminated computer. This paper aims at providing an image augmentation enhanced deep convolutional neural network (CNN) models for the detection of malware families in a metamorphic malware environment. The main contributions of the paper's model structure consist of three components, including image generation from malware samples, image augmentation, and the last one is classifying the malware families by using a convolutional neural network model. In the first component, the collected malware samples are converted binary representation to 3-channel images using windowing technique. The second component of the system create the augmented version of the images, and the last component builds a classification model. The Impact of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) in Higher Education Institutions: Support in improvement of academic processes

Abstract Recently the universities in Pakistan started replacing their old legacy systems with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems to improve their academic and administrative processes. Previously, ERP systems were used in business organizations to gain a competitive edge over competitors. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has implemented ERP systems at eight different universities in Pakistan. The HEC has invested a significant amount of money to facilitate the integration, customization and implementation of these systems. Little research is reported to assess the impact of ERP systems in higher education institutions. Previous studies reported in the literature focus mainly on Critical Success Factors (CSFs) and risk factors in success and failure of ERP systems. To explore the research problem, various Information System (IS) success models were studied as part of the literature review. This study also presents a conceptual research model based on re-specification of the DeLone and McLean IS success model to empirically measure the impact of ERP in higher education in the Pakistani universities’ context. This research study empirically evaluated the post implementation impact of the ERP systems in higher education institutions, focusing on improvement in the academic and administrative processes. This study used a sequential explanatory mixed method design approach to meet the objectives and address the research questions. Quantitative data were collected from a survey involving 230 respondents (120 students and 110 faculty members) from two selected universities that had implemented ERP systems. The qualitative data was collected through 12 interviews (five faculty members, five heads of department and two VCs). The results of both the quantitative and qualitative findings highlight that the ERP implementation has a positive and significant impact on the improvement of academic processes such as student satisfaction, teaching quality, better communication and feedback mechanism and the higher management decision-making process in Pakistani university contexts. The research findings will help future researchers to build on the research, perhaps with different samples and methodologies and will be useful for higher education to formulate strategies for the implementation of ERP system in their respective public-sector universities. Comparative Study of Sodium and Potassium in Different Types of Gallstones and in Serum of Subjects with Gallstones and Controls

The study comprises evaluation of sodium and potassium in the pathogenesis of human gallstones as well as measurement of the concentration of these elements in gallstones and in sera of 109 gallstone subjects and 100 controls (age and sex matched with no personal or family history of gallstone disease). It was observed that serum concentrations for both sodium and potassium were comparable (p>0.05) between gallstone subjects and control subjects. In gallstones the concentration of sodium was significantly higher as compared to potassium (p<0.05). Normal sodium to potassium ratio was seen in serum of gallstone subjects, whereas, low sodium to potassium ratio was seen in gallstone carriers. Amongst the different types of gallstones, significantly high (p<0.05) concentrations of sodium and potassium were seen in calcium bilirubinate gallstones. The levels for these mineral elements were also raised in serum of pure calcium carbonate gallstone subjects.The results demonstrate that the higher concentration of sodium and potassium in gallstones may involve in both calcium bilirubinate gallstones and in serum of calcium carbonate gallstone subjects, which indicate their association with calcium in the precipitation of calcium bilirubinate and calcium carbonate in bile. Furthermore, low sodium to potassium ratio in gallstones indicates low ratio in bile of gallstone subjects

The effects of using variable lengths for degraded signal acquisition in GPS receivers

The signal acquisition in GPS receivers is the first and very crucial process that may affect the overall performance of a navigation receiver. Acquisition program initiates a searching operation on received navigation signals to detect and identify the visible satellites. However, signal acquisition becomes a very challenging task in a degraded environment (i.e, dense urban) and the receiver may not be able to detect the satellites present in radio-vicinity, thus cannot estimate an accurate position solution. In such environments, satellite signals are attenuated and fluctuated due to fading introduced by Multipath and NLOS reception. To perform signal acquisition in such degraded environments, larger data accumulation can be effective in enhancing SNR, which tradeoff huge computational load, prolonged acquisition time and high cost of receiver. This paper highlights the effects of fading on satellite signal acquisition in GPS receiver through variable data lengths and SNR comparison, and then develops a statistical relationship between satellite visibility and SNR.
