Emotional intelligence under stress: valuable or overrated?

    Get PDF
Stress has created a vigorous discourse among researchers of various fields and considered as one of the most vital issue that has not yet been solved. A growing interest has been developed on the influence of emotional intelligence in reducing stress level among students. This study examined emotional intelligence as four interrelated processes which were postulated from the four-branch emotional intelligence theory of Salovey and Mayer. A self-reported measure of the Assessing Emotions Scale (AES) and the Perceived Stress Scale was used respectively to measure emotional intelligence and stress level of the participants involved. PLS-SEM was employed to assess the measurement construct and structural model of this study. The findings indicated a significant negative relationship between the ability to perceive emotion, the ability to manage one’s own emotion, and the ability to manage others emotion with stress. However, no significant associations were identified between the ability to utilize emotion and stress among the participants involved. Results also confirmed that the ability to perceive and assess emotion accurately as the most prominent emotional intelligence dimension in predicting stress. The applied utilities of emotional intelligence are discussed and the potential value of integrating emotional intelligence in formal tertiary education systems is also highlighted

Designing a multi-agent approach system for distributed course timetabling

    Get PDF
This paper proposes tackling the difficult course timetabling problem using a multi-agent approach. The proposed design seeks to deal with the problem using a distributed solution environment in which a mediator agent coordinates various timetabling agents that cooperate to improve a common global solution. Initial timetables provided to the multi-agent system are generated using several hybrid heuristics that combine graph colouring heuristics and local search in different ways. The hybrid heuristics are capable of generating feasible timetables for all instances of the two sets of benchmark problems used here. We discuss how these initialisation hybrid heuristics can be incorporated into the proposed multi-agent approach in order to conduct distributed timetabling. This preliminary work serves as a solid basis towards the design of an effective multi-agent distributed timetabling system

IoT-based autonomous baby monitoring system using mobile app control

In this modern world, almost 80% of parents have to work in order to balance their financial demands. The probability of providing better childcare, especially for babies is reducing. Although hiring a guardian or sending babies to daycare centers can temporarily solve the issue, it does not reduce the anxiety and stress of the parents due to more and more child abuses being reported every year. During this Covid19 pandemic, the need for an alternative better solution is urgent when some parents are forced to undergo quarantine for at least a few weeks. In this paper, we propose to develop a long-ranged baby monitoring and controlling system. The system consists of hardware architecture that is inter-connected with an IoT network to monitor the real-time condition of the baby such as crying, awakening and cleanliness, and its surrounding environment such as temperature, humidity and motion. In the proposal, the overall system operation involves four different phases: data collection, information sharing and processing, output display and notification, and user control. At the end of the project, a prototype has been successfully constructed to collect the monitoring data, and then share and display them to the users accurately via mobile app. In addition, users can also remotely perform basic control over any components or devices that are connected to the system

Hybrid Wireless Home Security System Using Bluetooth and IoT Technologies

Home security systems are a must-have for any home in any part of the world to help protect our homes and other places alike. The main threats people face include intruders, break-ins, robberies, and fires, to mention but a few. While some of these threats, such as fires, can be contained by automatic actuators, others, such as break-ins and robberies, can't be prevented by automatic systems. The implementation of technologies such as surveillance cameras and the Internet of Things (IoT) is able to prevent such criminals, but they all require internet connection, high power consumption, and a high cost of setup and maintenance, which cannot be afforded by low-income earners. Hence, this paper intends to address some of the issues as stated above by proposing a hybrid wireless home security system that is able to provide low-end functions without the internet ability as well as high-end functions with the internet connection. For the low-end setup, Bluetooth is chosen. Meanwhile, IoT is implemented for high-end purposes. The proposed system includes the functions of breaching and fire alerts, as well as the control of light for energy saving. A new method has also been proposed in order to reduce the breach detection errors from the infrared (IR) sensors. Finally, a final prototype for the performance demonstration has been successfully built to showcase the functions of Bluetooth and IoT technologies

Laboratory management of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia: proposing a new paradigm

peer reviewedSince the discovery of human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 in early 80’s, the link between HPV and cervical cancer has been established with certainty, a function of the discovery and cloning of a range of HPV types associated with both cancer precursors (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia or CIN) and carcinomas and extensive epidemiologic, clinical, pathologic and experimental data. These accumulated results have culminated in new paradigms of cancer prevention through screening and triage. Despite this, the management of women with CIN is still suboptimal and the over-treatment of these conditions still occurs, largely due to the lack of clarity regarding which precancerous lesions are most likely to progress in grade. Recently, a discrete population of cuboidal cells was discovered at the cervical squamocolumnar junction, the anatomical site where the large majority of HPVrelated (pre)neoplastic lesions develop. These cells appear to be embryonic in nature and participate both in benign metaplasias and the initial phase of precancer development. This review summarizes the historical evolution of precursor management, assesses the potential role of this and other discoveries in segregating lower from higher risk precursors and examines their potential impact on the management of women with real or potential cervical cancer precursors

Machine Learning-Based Car Specification Mismatching System for Pre-Crime Detection

Even with the installation of security systems and video cameras in residential buildings, the number of complexes and crimes in the neighborhood continues to worry residents in the modern era. For instance, the latest statistics show that the rate of vehicle theft was the highest among the crime rates in Malaysia from 2010 to 2017. It is common for criminals to take advantage of security flaws, such as when a phony license plate is put on a car and the security system misses it, allowing the criminals to enter the facility with ease. Hence, this paper intends to close the loopholes that criminals exploit by developing a system to identify car specifications such as the vehicle type, license plate, logo, and color using machine learning. This data will then be used to match the information of the car’s owner, allowing the security system to discover and prevent any crime before it happens. Machine learning and deep learning models such as MobileNet SSD, YOLOv4, OCR and TensorFlow Lite color models are used to predict the car specifications. When mounting security cameras perpendicularly on the front-sides of vehicles to capture high-resolution photos, the proposed system is able to achieve a considerable performance accuracy of 100% for vehicle type, 97% for license plate, 74% for logo, and 68.5% for color predictions, respectively

    Get PDF
The transfer of knowledge enables local communities to keep up with the current revolution of ICT and later to create a knowledge society. This study reviews knowledge transfer activities to local communities in Labuan through the E-Community Program conducted by the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI), Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSLIC). The objective of this study is to investigate the trend of selecting and implementing e-community projects. The study was conducted quantitatively and qualitatively towards the e-community project reports as well as discussions between lecturers. The finding shows that graphic design projects are popular e-community projects and school students are the most benefited communities. Impacts, challenges and suggestions for improvements to the program are also discussed
