    Extra ZZ bosons and low-energy tests of unification

    If there is an extra U(1) gauge symmetry broken at low energies, then it may be possible from the charges of the known quarks and leptons under this U(1) to make inferences about how much gauge unification occurs at high scales and about the unification group. (For instance, there are certain observed properties of an extra U(1)′U(1)' that would be inconsistent with unification in four dimensions at high scales.) A general analysis is presented.     Effects of Macronutrients on Seed Quality and Profitability Analysis of Sunflower Production in Northwest Pakistan

    Potassium (K) and phosphorus (P) application to sunflower (Helianthus annus L.) reduced cost of production, increased seed oil and protein concentration, yield and net returns on the K and P deficient soils in Northwest Pakistan. Field experiment was conducted at the New Developmental Research Farm of NWFP (North West Frontier Province) Agricultural University Peshawar, Pakistan during summer 2006. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with split plot arrangements using three replications. Six levels of K (0, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 kg ha-1) were kept in main plots while four levels of P (0, 45, 90 and 135 kg ha-1) were kept in sub-plots. Increase in K and P levels enhanced seed oil concentration, on the other hand, increase in P level increased seed protein concentration but increase in K level decreased seed protein concentration. Both oil and protein yields per unit area increased significantly with increase in K and P levels. The increase in oil and protein yields of sunflower was mainly attributed to the improvement in yield components and significant increase in seed yield. The highest net returns of Rs. 25268 (grain yield basis) and Rs. 31274 (oil yield basis) was obtained from those plots that received a combination of 100 kg K + 45 kg P ha-1.     Anthropic tuning of the weak scale and of m_u/m_d in two-Higgs-doublet models

    It is shown that in a model in which up-type and down-type fermions acquire mass from different Higgs doublets, the anthropic tuning of the Higgs mass parameters can explain the fact that the observed masses of the dd and uu quarks are nearly the same with dd slightly heavier. If Yukawa couplings are assumed not to "scan" (vary among domains), this would also help explain why the t quark is much heavier than the b quark. It is also pointed out that the existence of dark matter invalidates some earlier anthropic arguments against the viability of domains where the Standard Model Higgs has positive μ2\mu^2, but makes other even stronger arguments possible.Comment: 31 pages, 7 figure

    A non-supersymmetric grand unified theory can exhibit a "radiative fermion mass hierarchy", in which the heavier quarks and leptons get mass at tree level and the lighter ones get mass from loop diagrams. Recently the first predictive model of this type was proposed. Here it is analyzed numerically and it is shown to give an excellent fit to the quark and lepton masses and mixings, including the CP phase violating phase δCKM\delta_{CKM}.     Biosorption of heavy metals by Bacillus thuringiensis strain OSM29 originating from industrial effluent contaminated north Indian soil

    AbstractThe study was navigated to examine the metal biosorbing ability of bacterial strain OSM29 recovered from rhizosphere of cauliflower grown in soil irrigated consistently with industrial effluents. The metal tolerant bacterial strain OSM29 was identified as Bacillus thuringiensis following 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. In the presence of the varying concentrations (25–150mgl−1) of heavy metals, such as cadmium, chromium, copper, lead and nickel, the B. thuringiensis strain OSM29 showed an obvious metal removing potential. The effect of certain physico-chemical factors such as pH, initial metal concentration, and contact time on biosorption was also assessed. The optimum pH for nickel and chromium removal was 7, while for cadmium, copper and lead, it was 6. The optimal contact time was 30min. for each metal at 32±2°C by strain OSM29. The biosorption capacity of the strain OSM29 for the metallic ions was highest for Ni (94%) which was followed by Cu (91.8%), while the lowest sorption by bacterial biomass was recorded for Cd (87%) at 25mgl−1 initial metal ion concentration. The regression coefficients obtained for heavy metals from the Freundlich and Langmuir models were significant. The surface chemical functional groups of B. thuringiensis biomass identified by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) were amino, carboxyl, hydroxyl, and carbonyl groups, which may be involved in the biosorption of heavy metals. The biosorption ability of B. thuringiensis OSM29 varied with metals and was pH and metal concentration dependent. The biosorption of each metal was fairly rapid which could be an advantage for large scale treatment of contaminated sites

    Corn yield and evapotranspiration (ET) data obtained from weighing lysimeters is accumulated from nine experiments over six years and used to estimate a response function. The quadratic response function of corn yield as a function of water use by the plants indicates that yield increases at a decreasing rate as ET increases. Extending the analysis to water application data by commercial producers in a thirteen county area in the Texas Panhandle provides a response function of yield as a function of water application to meet ET needs. The best estimate of the relationship is a quadratic function. The response function is transformed into a value function measuring the value of corn produced corresponding to different levels of water availability. The cost function is estimated in terms of the energy cost for irrigation. These value and cost functions are then used to determine the profit maximizing level of water application for various price levels for corn and natural gas

    As criminal activities are increasing in Pakistan, there are different types of crime that come into the mind. Cyber-crime is the most common among internet users, especially students who are connected online most of the time for different purposes. This study examined the nature of cyber-crime, causes of cyber-crime and its effects on victims. The sample for the study consists of 201 students from department of social sciences Bahauddin Zakirya University, Multan. The researcher used multi stage sampling and questionnaires as a tool for data collection. The results were analyzed by using SPSS. The results revealed that 86.5% of the respondents used internet every day, while 95(47.2%) of respondents used internet for study, other 30(14.9%) heard songs by using internet, 45(22.3%) youth played games and 41(20.3%) watched movies. University students become victimized due to fake online job 124(61.6%), while monetary reward 37(18.6%), chat in open room 20(9.9%) and downloaded games 20(9.95%). There are different effects like 80(39.8%) psychological losses which include mental effect of private information losing and risk of re-victimization. While 55(27.3%) respondents are harassed, on the other hand, 21(10.4%) respondents lost their financial data and 45(22.3%) students lost their personal information data. Future research will be needed to let the youth be fully aware of cyber-crime effects

    Dividend Policy as a Core Determinant of Earning Management: Evidence from Pakistan

    The current study estimated the impact of dividend policy on earnings management for the non-financial firms of Pakistan listed at the Karachi Stock Exchange. The data covering the period from 2005 to 2017 were estimated by using a random effect-generalized least square regression. The study findings report that dividend policy is a significant determinant of earning management and limits the probability of a firm’s earning management practices. This research gives us some empirical evidence regarding the role of key contributing factors in the scope of earnings management. Regulators can implement corporate governance rules and regulations based on empirical tracts in place of motivational debates on politics. This study results offer a compact platform for investors to eradicate ambiguity by recognizing the likelihoods of resourceful goals and improving their policymaking process. The research findings will help to give investors a clear idea about the various factors that play a contributing part for making financial reporting and misreporting of profits.  These contributing factors allow investors to be careful about the ingenious purpose and effectiveness of management to obtain returns for their benefit

    Objective: To determine the difference in Blood Pressure (BP) readings taken before, during and after the clinic encounter. Study Design: Descriptive study. Place and Duration of Study: Cardiology Clinic, The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, from January to August 2013. Methodology: Hypertensive and normotensive participants aged ≥ 18 years were recruited. Pre-clinic BP was measured by a nurse and in-clinic BP by a physician. After 15 minutes, two post-clinic BP readings were taken at 1 minute interval. All readings were taken using Omron HEM7221-E. Results: Out of 180 participants, males were 57% and 130 (71%) were hypertensive. Mean SBP (Systolic BP) taken preclinic, in-clinic, post-clinic 1 and post-clinic 2 were: 126 ± 20 mmHg, 131 ± 23 mmHg, 126 ± 20 mmHg and 121 ± 21 mmHg respectively (p \u3c 0.001). Mean DBP (Diastolic BP) taken pre-clinic, in-clinic, post-clinic 1 and post-clinic 2 were 77 ± 12 mmHg, 81 ± 13 mmHg, 79 ± 12 mmHg and 79 ± 11 mmHg respectively (p \u3c 0.001). Conclusion: BP taken in the post-clinic setting may significantly be the lowest reading in a clinic encounter, making in-clinic BP unreliable to diagnose or manage hypertension

Porter Lab, Department of Biomedical Sciences Age is a significant variable in cancer development, and approximately 1/3 of breast cancer cases occur in patients older than 70. Another emerging risk factor is parity, or childbearing, which may be linked to cellular changes that affect a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. These changes are thought to result from the mammary gland not reverting to normal after lactation and involution - a developmental remodeling process where the milk secreting cells are cleared and replaced with adipocytes after weaning. Aberrant expression of the cyclin-like protein Spy1 has been shown to stimulate precocious development, resulting in disrupted morphology and oncogenesis within the mammary gland. Preliminary data suggests that the mammary glands of mice overexpressing Spy1 do not fully regress following lactation and involution, which may predispose them to breast cancer. We hypothesize that the overexpression of Spy1 exacerbates the long-term effects of parity on mammary gland morphology. To investigate this, we performed hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining as well as immunohistochemistry (IHC) on paraffin embedded sections, and whole mount staining of MMTV-Spy1 mice, a transgenic mouse model that overexpresses Spy1 within the mammary gland. We then compared the mammary gland morphology of parous MMTV-Spy1 mice to nulliparous MMTV-Spy1 mice, parous control FVB mice, and nulliparous control FVB mice. This research begins to improve our understanding of Spy1’s role in regulating proliferation and apoptosis, contributes to our overall knowledge of breast cancer dynamics, and further solidifies Spy1 as an important target for treatment
