Genome Sequences of Three Lactobacillus Species Strains of the Stomach of the White-Footed Deermouse (Peromyscus leucopus).
Three colony types of Lactobacillus were isolated from the stomach of LL colony stock Peromyscus leucopus deermice, a reservoir for several human zoonoses. Genome sequences revealed two isolates to be new strains of Lactobacillus animalis and Lactobacillus reuteri The third was distinct from known species and was provisionally designated Lactobacillus sp. strain LL6
Cold dark matter in brane cosmology scenario
We analyze the dark matter problem in the context of brane cosmology. We
investigate the impact of the non-conventional brane cosmology on the relic
abundance of non-relativistic stable particles in high and low reheating
scenarios. We show that in case of high reheating temperature, the brane
cosmology may enhance the dark matter relic density by many order of magnitudes
and a stringent lower bound on the five dimensional scale is obtained. We also
consider low reheating temperature scenarios with chemical equilibrium and
non-equilibrium. We emphasize that in non-equilibrium case, the resulting relic
density is very small. While with equilibrium, it is increased by a factor of
O(10^2) with respect to the standard thermal production. Therefore, dark matter
particles with large cross section, which is favored by detection expirements,
can be consistent with the recent relic density observational limits.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur
SUSY R parity violation and CP asymmetry in semi-leptonic tau-decays
We analyze the CP violation in the semileptonic | \Delta S|=1 tau-decays in
supersymmetric extensions of the standard model (SM) with R parity violating
term. We show that the CP asymmetry of tau-decay is enhanced significantly and
the current experimental limits obtained by CLEO collaborations can be easily
accommodated. We argue that observing CP violation in semi leptonic tau-decay
would be a clear evidence for R-parity violating SUSY extension of the SM.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Numerical Modeling of Anti-icing Systems and Comparison to Test Results on a NACA 0012 Airfoil
A series of experimental tests were conducted in the NASA Lewis IRT on an electro-thermally heated NACA 0012 airfoil. Quantitative comparisons between the experimental results and those predicted by a computer simulation code were made to assess the validity of a recently developed anti-icing model. An infrared camera was utilized to scan the instantaneous temperature contours of the skin surface. Despite some experimental difficulties, good agreement between the numerical predictions and the experiment results were generally obtained for the surface temperature and the possibility for each runback to freeze. Some recommendations were given for an efficient operation of a thermal anti-icing system

Using automatic speech recognition to evaluate Arabic to English transliteration
Increased travel and international communication has led to an increased need for transliteration of Arabic proper names for people, places, technical terms and organisations. There are a variety of available Arabic to English transliteration systems such as Unicode, the Buckwalter Arabic transliteration, and ArabTeX. The transliteration tables have been developed and used by researchers for many years, but there are only limited attempts to evaluate and compare different transliteration systems. This thesis investigates whether or not speech recognition technology could be used to evaluate different Arabic-English transliteration systems. In order to do so there were 5 main objectives: firstly, to investigate the possibility of using English speech recognition engines to recognize Arabic words; secondly, to establish the possibility of automatic transliteration of diacritised Arabic words for the purpose of creating a vocabulary for the speech recognition engine; thirdly, to explore the possibility of automatically generating transliterations of non diacritised Arabic words; fourthly to construct a general method to compare and evaluate different transliteration; and finally, to test the system and use it to experiment with new transliterations ideas
Factors affecting nitrate distribution in shallow groundwater under a beef farm in South Eastern Ireland
peer-reviewedGroundwater contamination was characterised using a methodology which combines shallow groundwater geochemistry data from 17 piezometers over a 2 yr period in a statistical framework and hydrogeological techniques. NitrateâN (NO3-N) contaminant mass flux was calculated across three control planes (rows of piezometers) in six isolated plots. Results showed natural attenuation occurs on site although the method does not directly differentiate between dilution and denitrification. It was further investigated whether NO3-N concentration in shallow groundwater (<5 m below ground level) generated from an agricultural point source on a 4.2 ha site on a beef farm in SE Ireland could be predicted from saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) measurements, ground elevation (m Above Ordnance Datum), elevation of groundwater sampling (screen opening interval) (m AOD) and distance from a dirty water point pollution source. Tobit regression, using a background concentration threshold of 2.6 mg NO3-N Lâ1 showed, when assessed individually in a step wise procedure, Ksat was significantly related to groundwater NO3-N concentration. Distance of the point dirty water pollution source becomes significant when included with Ksat in the model. The model relationships show areas with higher Ksat values have less time for denitrification to occur, whereas lower Ksat values allow denitrification to occur. Areas with higher permeability transport greater NO3-N fluxes to ground and surface waters. When the distribution of Clâ was examined by the model, Ksat and ground elevation had the most explanatory power but Ksat was not significant pointing to dilution having an effect. Areas with low NO3 concentration and unaffected Clâ concentration points to denitrification, low NO3 concentration and low Clâ chloride concentration points to dilution and combining these findings allows areas of denitrification and dilution to be inferred. The effect of denitrification is further supported as mean groundwater NO3-N was significantly (P < 0.05) related to groundwater N2/Ar ratio, redox potential (Eh), dissolved O2 and N2 and was close to being significant with N2O (P = 0.08). Calculating contaminant mass flux across more than one control plane is a useful tool to monitor natural attenuation.
