E/V Nautilus EM302 Multibeam Echosounder System Review
Introduction
The E/V Nautilus undertook leg NA040 to perform a review of the vessel’s Kongsberg EM302 multibeam echosounder in the vicinity of the continental shelf break offshore of St. Petersburg, Florida, from May 4-9, 2014 (Fig. 1). Paul Johnson and Kevin Jerram provided logistical and technical support for data collection and analysis. This report:
• Describes the data collected.
• Provides an overview of the processing methods used on the data
• Presents the EM302 system performance for accuracy and coverage over the expected operational depth range.
• Documents changes made to the system configuration prior to the 2014 field season.
• Plots the EM302 transducer impedance data to document transducer health
The California Planet Survey II. A Saturn-Mass Planet Orbiting the M Dwarf Gl649
We report precise Doppler measurements of the nearby (d = 10.34 pc) M dwarf
Gl649 that reveal the presence of a planet with a minimum mass Msini = 0.328
Mjup in an eccentric (e = 0.30), 598.3 day orbit. Our photometric monitoring
reveals Gl649 to be a new variable star with brightness changes on both
rotational and decadal timescales. However, neither of these timescales are
consistent with the 600-day Doppler signal and so provide strong support for
planetary reflex motion as the best interpretation of the observed radial
velocity variations. Gl649b is only the seventh Doppler-detected giant planet
around an M dwarf. The properties of the planet and host-star therefore
contribute significant information to our knowledge of planet formation around
low-mass stars. We revise and refine the occurrence rate of giant planets
around M dwarfs based on the California Planet Survey sample of low-mass stars
(M* < 0.6 Msun). We find that f = 3.4^{+2.2}_{-0.9}% of stars with M* < 0.6
Msun harbor planets with Msini > 0.3$ Mjup and a < 2.5 AU. When we restrict our
analysis to metal-rich stars with [Fe/H] > +0.2 we find the occurrence rate is
10.7^{+5.9}_{-4.2}%.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, PASP accepte
A new chemistry for managing soybean aphid
Since the arrival of soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, to North America, entomologists have generated considerable research to effectively protect yield in soybean, Glycine max (L.). Population dynamics of this relatively new pest have been erratic between fields and among years, and timely insecticide applications must be used to prevent severe economic loss
The Impact of Spatial Heterogeneity in Land Use Practices and Aquifer Characteristics on Groundwater Conservation Policy Cost
Estimation of agricultural policy cost for a given level of groundwater conservation requires the establishment of an accurate baseline condition. This is especially critical when the benefits and cost of any conservation program are generally estimated relative to the status quo policy or baseline situation. An inaccurate baseline estimate will lead to poor estimates of potential water conservation savings and agricultural policy cost. Over a 60-year planning horizon per acre net present value is as much as 29.8% higher for a study area when aquifer characteristics are assumed to be homogenous and set to their average area value than when the heterogeneity in aquifer characteristics is explicitly modeled.Aquifer Modeling, Economics, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,
Successful Aging: A Psychosocial Resources Model for Very Old Adults
Objectives. Using data from the first two phases of the Georgia Centenarian Study, we proposed a latent factor structure for the Duke OARS domains: Economic Resources, Mental Health, Activities of Daily Living, Physical Health, and Social Resources. Methods. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted on two waves of the Georgia Centenarian Study to test a latent variable measurement model of the five resources; nested model testing was employed to assess the final measurement model for equivalency of factor structure over time. Results. The specified measurement model fit the data well at Time 1. However, at Time 2, Social Resources only had one indicator load significantly and substantively. Supplemental analyses demonstrated that a model without Social Resources adequately fit the data. Factorial invariance over time was confirmed for the remaining four latent variables. Discussion. This study’s findings allow researchers and clinicians to reduce the number of OARS questions asked of participants. This has practical implications because increased difficulties with hearing, vision, and fatigue in older adults may require extended time or multiple interviewer sessions to complete the battery of OARS questions

Characterization the Cool KOIs. II. The M Dwarf KOI-254 and its Hot Jupiter
We report the confirmation and characterization of a transiting gas giant planet orbiting the M dwarf KOI-254 every 2.455239 days, which was originally discovered by the Kepler mission. We use radial velocity measurements, adaptive optics imaging, and near-infrared spectroscopy to confirm the planetary nature of the transit events. KOI-254 b is the first hot Jupiter discovered around an M-type dwarf star. We also present a new model-independent method of using broadband photometry to estimate the mass and metallicity of an M dwarf without relying on a direct distance measurement. Included in this methodology is a new photometric metallicity calibration based on J – K colors. We use this technique to measure the physical properties of KOI-254 and its planet. We measure a planet mass of M_P = 0.505 M_(Jup), radius R_P = 0.96 R_(Jup), and semimajor axis a = 0.030 AU, based on our measured stellar mass M_* = 0.59 M_☉ and radius R_* = 0.55 R_☉. We also find that the host star is metal-rich, which is consistent with the sample of M-type stars known to harbor giant planets
Thermal Structures Technology Development for Reusable Launch Vehicle Cryogenic Propellant Tanks
Analytical and experimental studies conducted at the NASA, Langley Research Center (LaRC) for investigating integrated cryogenic propellant tank systems for a reusable launch vehicle (RLV) are described. The cryogenic tanks are investigated as an integrated tank system. An integrated tank system includes the tank wall, cryogenic insulation, thermal protection system (TPS) attachment sub-structure, and TPS. Analysis codes are used to size the thicknesses of cryogenic insulation and TPS insulation for thermal loads, and to predict tank buckling strengths at various ring frame spacings. The unique test facilities developed for the testing of cryogenic tank components are described. Testing at cryogenic and high-temperatures verifies the integrity of materials, design concepts, manufacturing processes, and thermal/structural analyses. Test specimens ranging from the element level to the subcomponent level are subjected to projected vehicle operational mechanical loads and temperatures. The analytical and experimental studies described in this paper provide a portion of the basic information required for the development of light-weight reusable cryogenic propellant tanks
