Optimal RTLS abort trajectories for an HL-20 personnel launch vehicle
The primary objective of this study was to determine whether Return To Launch Site (RTLS) abort at T seconds along the launch trajectory of the Personnel Launch System (PLS) is possible using optimal control theory. The secondary objective is to assess effects of bank angle constraint, lift coefficient constraint, free and fixed final boundary conditions, etc. of the vehicle. Extensive horizontal gene transfer in cheese-associated bacteria.
Acquisition of genes through horizontal gene transfer (HGT) allows microbes to rapidly gain new capabilities and adapt to new or changing environments. Identifying widespread HGT regions within multispecies microbiomes can pinpoint the molecular mechanisms that play key roles in microbiome assembly. We sought to identify horizontally transferred genes within a model microbiome, the cheese rind. Comparing 31 newly sequenced and 134 previously sequenced bacterial isolates from cheese rinds, we identified over 200 putative horizontally transferred genomic regions containing 4733 protein coding genes. The largest of these regions are enriched for genes involved in siderophore acquisition, and are widely distributed in cheese rinds in both Europe and the US. These results suggest that HGT is prevalent in cheese rind microbiomes, and that identification of genes that are frequently transferred in a particular environment may provide insight into the selective forces shaping microbial communities
Facial Expressions of Emotion: Are Angry Faces Detected More Efficiently?
The rapid detection of facial expressions of anger or threat has obvious adaptive value. In this study, we examined the efficiency of facial processing by means of a visual search task. Participants searched displays of schematic faces and were required to determine whether the faces displayed were all the same or whether one was different. Four main results were found: (1) When displays contained the same faces, people were slower in detecting the absence of a discrepant face when the faces displayed angry (or sad/angry) rather than happy expressions. (2) When displays contained a discrepant face people were faster in detecting this when the discrepant face displayed an angry rather than a happy expression. (3) Neither of these patterns for same and different displays was apparent when face displays were inverted, or when just the mouth was presented in isolation. (4) The search slopes for angry targets were significantly lower than for happy targets. These results suggest that detection of angry facial expressions is fast and efficient, although does not 'pop-out, in the traditional sense
Mood-congruent free recall bias in anxious individuals is not a consequence of response bias
The status of mood-congruent free recall bias in anxious individuals was evaluated following incidental encoding of target words. Individuals with high and low levels of trait anxiety completed a modified Stroop task, which revealed an attentional bias for threat-related stimuli in anxious individuals. This group was significantly slower in naming the colour in which threat-related words were displayed compared to neutral words. In a subsequent free recall test for the words used in the modified Stroop task, anxious individuals recalled more threat-related words compared to low-anxious people. This difference was significant even when controlling for the false recall of items that had not been presented during study. These results support the view put forward by Russo, Fox, Bellinger, and Nguyen-Van-Tam (2001) that mood-congruent free recall bias in anxious individuals can be observed if the target material is encoded at a relatively shallow level. Moreover, contrary to Dowens and Calvo (2003), the current results show that the memory advantage for threat-related information in anxious individuals is not a consequence of response bias. © 2006 Psychology Press Ltd
Focusing on fear: attentional disengagement from emotional faces
Evidence suggests that anxiety is associated with a shift of visual attention toward threatening stimuli in the environment, such as facial expressions (Mogg & Bradley, 1999). More recent evidence, however, indicates that anxiety may be better characterized by a failure to rapidly disengage the visual attention system away from threat-related facial expressions (Fox, Russo, Bowles, & Dutton, 2001). The present study further investigates this delayed disengagement hypothesis. Results show that high trait-anxious individuals, in contrast to low trait-anxious individuals, take longer to classify peripheral target letters when fearful facial expressions were presented at fixation relative to sad, happy, or neutral expressions. These findings demonstrate a specific tendency to dwell on fear-relevant stimuli, as opposed to negative information in general. These findings are considered from an evolutionary perspective and the possible role of delayed disengagement from threat in the maintenance of anxiety states is also discussed. © 2005 Psychology Press Ltd
Correlates of Psychopathic Personality Traits in Everyday Life: Results from a Large Community Survey
Although the traits of psychopathic personality (psychopathy) have received extensive attention from researchers in forensic psychology, psychopathology, and personality psychology, the relations of these traits to aspects of everyday functioning are poorly understood. Using a large internet survey of members of the general population (N = 3388), we examined the association between psychopathic traits, as measured by a brief but well-validated self-report measure, and occupational choice, political orientation, religious affiliation, and geographical residence. Psychopathic traits, especially those linked to fearless dominance, were positively and moderately associated with holding leadership and management positions, as well as high-risk occupations. In addition, psychopathic traits were positively associated with political conservatism, lack of belief in God, and living in Europe as opposed to the United States, although the magnitudes of these statistical effects were generally small in magnitude. Our findings offer preliminary evidence that psychopathic personality traits display meaningful response penetration into daily functioning, and raise provocative questions for future research
Dependence of Galaxy Quenching on Halo Mass and Distance from its Centre
We study the dependence of star-formation quenching on galaxy mass and
environment, in the SDSS (z~0.1) and the AEGIS (z~1). It is crucial that we
define quenching by low star-formation rate rather than by red colour, given
that one third of the red galaxies are star forming. We address stellar mass
M*, halo mass Mh, density over the nearest N neighbours deltaN, and distance to
the halo centre D. The fraction of quenched galaxies appears more strongly
correlated with Mh at fixed M* than with M* at fixed Mh, while for satellites
quenching also depends on D. We present the M*-Mh relation for centrals at z~1.
At z~1, the dependence of quenching on M* at fixed Mh is somewhat more
pronounced than at z~0, but the quenched fraction is low (10%) and the haloes
are less massive. For satellites, M*-dependent quenching is noticeable at high
D, suggesting a quenching dependence on sub-halo mass for recently captured
satellites. At small D, where satellites likely fell in more than a few Gyr
ago, quenching strongly depends on Mh, and not on M*. The Mh-dependence of
quenching is consistent with theoretical wisdom where virial shock heating in
massive haloes shuts down accretion and triggers ram-pressure stripping,
causing quenching. The interpretation of deltaN is complicated by the fact that
it depends on the number of observed group members compared to N, motivating

On the Evolution of the Velocity-Mass-Size Relations of Disk-Dominated Galaxies over the Past 10 Billion Years
We study the evolution of the scaling relations between maximum circular
velocity, stellar mass and optical half-light radius of star-forming
disk-dominated galaxies in the context of LCDM-based galaxy formation models.
Using data from the literature combined with new data from the DEEP2 and AEGIS
surveys we show that there is a consistent observational and theoretical
picture for the evolution of these scaling relations from z\sim 2 to z=0. The
evolution of the observed stellar scaling relations is weaker than that of the
virial scaling relations of dark matter haloes, which can be reproduced, both
qualitatively and quantitatively, with a simple, cosmologically-motivated model
for disk evolution inside growing NFW dark matter haloes. In this model optical
half-light radii are smaller, both at fixed stellar mass and maximum circular
velocity, at higher redshifts. This model also predicts that the scaling
relations between baryonic quantities evolve even more weakly than the
corresponding stellar relations. We emphasize, though, that this weak evolution
does not imply that individual galaxies evolve weakly. On the contrary,
individual galaxies grow strongly in mass, size and velocity, but in such a way
that they move largely along the scaling relations. Finally, recent
observations have claimed surprisingly large sizes for a number of star-forming
disk galaxies at z \sim 2, which has caused some authors to suggest that high
redshift disk galaxies have abnormally high spin parameters. However, we argue
that the disk scale lengths in question have been systematically overestimated
by a factor \sim 2, and that there is an offset of a factor \sim 1.4 between
H\alpha sizes and optical sizes. Taking these effects into account, there is no
indication that star forming galaxies at high redshifts (z\sim 2) have

Feasibility, acceptability, and characteristics associated with adherence and completion of a culturally relevant internet-enhanced physical activity pilot intervention for overweight and obese young adult African American women enrolled in college
BACKGROUND: African American women are one of the least active demographic groups in the US, with only 36% meeting the national physical activity recommendations in comparison to 46% of White women. Physical activity begins to decline in African American women in adolescence and continues to decline into young adulthood. Yet, few interventions have been developed to promote physical activity in African American women during this critical period of life. The purpose of this article was to evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of a culturally-relevant Internet-enhanced physical activity pilot intervention for overweight/obese African American college females and to examine psychosocial and behavioral characteristics associated with intervention adherence and completion.
METHODS: A 6-month single group pre-posttest design was used. Participants (n = 27) accessed a culturally-relevant Social Cognitive Theory-based physical activity promotion website while engaging in a minimum of four moderate-intensity physical activity sessions each week. Acceptability and feasibility of the intervention was assessed by participant retention and a consumer satisfaction survey completed by participants.
RESULTS: Fifty-six percent of participants (n = 15) completed the intervention. Study completers were more physically active at baseline (P = 0.05) and had greater social support for exercise from family members (P = 0.04). Sixty percent of study completers (n = 9) reported the website as enjoyable or very enjoyable to use and 60% (n = 9) reported increased motivation from participation in the physical activity program. Moreover, 87% (n = 13) reported they would recommend the website to a friend.
CONCLUSIONS: Results provide some preliminary support for the acceptability and feasibility of an Internet-enhanced physical activity program for overweight/obese African American women, while highlighting important limitations of the approach. Successful promotion of physical activity in college aged African American women as they emerge into adulthood may result in the development of life-long healthy physical activity patterns which may ultimately reduce physical activity-related health disparities in this high risk underserved population. Future studies with larger samples are needed to further explore the use of Internet-based programs to promote physical activity in this population
Mechanisms of Selective Attention in Generalized Anxiety Disorder
A well-established literature has identified different selective attentional orienting mechanisms underlying anxiety-related attentional bias, such as engagement and disengagement of attention. These mechanisms are thought to contribute to the onset and maintenance of anxiety disorders. However, conclusions to date have relied heavily on experimental work from subclinical samples. We therefore investigated individuals with diagnosed generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), healthy volunteers, and individuals with high trait anxiety (but not meeting GAD diagnostic criteria). Across two experiments we found faster disengagement from negative (angry and fearful) faces in GAD groups, an effect opposite to that expected on the basis of the subclinical literature. Together these data challenge current assumptions that we can generalize, to those with GAD, the pattern of selective attentional orienting to threat found in subclinical groups. We suggest a decisive two-stage experiment identifying stimuli of primary salience in GAD, then using these to reexamine orienting mechanisms across groups. </jats:p
