Harmonic distortion caused by EV battery chargers in the distribution systems network and its remedy

    Get PDF
An effective way to minimise harmonic pollution in power systems is by careful design of the equipment connected to them. It is important for designers of equipment associated with emerging technologies to be aware of the potential impact of their designs on power system quality. One such upcoming technology is electric vehicle (EV) battery charging which may contribute to high harmonic distortion in the power system during the charging period. The literature notes total harmonic distortion of up to 50%. These findings are the impetus behind the present paper, where an EV battery charger has been designed, with an inherent power quality control feature. A parallel power circuit topology has been proposed on an existing ferroresonant charger, which ensures that the THD of the input current remains within the acceptable harmonic distortion limits of the distribution system. The design and control of the battery charger are elaborated upon in the paper and simulation results are presented which confirm the performance of the charger

Identification of sleep apnea events using discrete wavelet transform of respiration, ECG and accelerometer signals

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder in which patient sleep patterns are disrupted due to recurrent pauses in breathing or by instances of abnormally low breathing. Current gold standard tests for the detection of apnea events are costly and have the addition of long waiting times. This paper investigates the use of cheap and easy to use sensors for the identification of sleep apnea events. Combinations of respiration, electrocardiography (ECG) and acceleration signals were analysed. Results show that using features, formed using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT), from the ECG and acceleration signals provided the highest classification accuracy, with an F1 score of 0.914. However, the novel employment of just the accelerometer signal during classification provided a comparable F1 score of 0.879. By employing one or a combination of the analysed sensors a preliminary test for sleep apnea, prior to the requirement for gold standard testing, can be performed

Metal complexes of 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione alter the susceptibility of the yeast Candida albicans to Amphotericin B and Miconazole

    Get PDF
Growth of the pathogenic yeast Candida albicans in sub-MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) levels of Cu(ClO4)2 · 6H2O and [Cu(phendio)3](ClO4)2 · 4H2O (phendio = 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione) increased the concentration of miconazole and amphotericin B required to achieve the MIC90 whereas pre-growth in AgClO4 and [Ag(phendio)2]ClO4 resulted in a small decrease in the relevant MIC90 values. The copper complexes reduce the oxygen consumption of C. albicans while the silver complexes increase oxygen consumption. In addition, pregrowth of cells in the copper complexes resulted in a lower ergosterol content while the silver complexes induced an elevation in ergosterol synthesis. The ability of copper and silver complexes to alter the susceptibility of C. albicans to miconazole and amphotericin B may be influenced by their action on respiration, since reduced respiration rates correlate with reduced cellular ergosterol which is the target for amphotericin B. Lower levels of ergosterol have previously been associated with elevated tolerance to this drug. In the case of reduced sensitivity to miconazole, tolerance may be mediated by lower ergosterol synthesis giving rise to fewer toxic side products once biosynthesis is inhibited by miconazole

Locating Tune Changes and Providing a Semantic Labelling of Sets of Irish Traditional Tunes

    Get PDF
An approach is presented which provides the tune change loactions within a set of Irish traditional turnes. Also provided are semantic labels for each part of each tune within the set. A set in Irish traditional music is a number of individual tunes played segue. Each of the tunes in the set are made up of structural segments called parts. Musical variation is a prominent characteristic of this genre. However, a certain set of notes known as set accented tones are considered impervious to musical variation. Chroma information is extracted at set accented tone locations within the music. The resulting chroma vectors are grouped to represent the parts of the music. The parts are then compared with one another to form a part similarity matrix. Unit kernels which represent the possible structures of an Irish traditional tuens are matched with the part similarity matrix to determine the tune change locations and semantic part labels

Prenatal exposure to methadone or buprenorphine: Early childhood developmental outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Methadone and buprenorphine are recommended to treat opioid use disorders during pregnancy. However, the literature on the relationship between longer-term effects of prenatal exposure to these medications and childhood development is both spare and inconsistent. METHODS: Participants were 96 children and their mothers who participated in MOTHER, a randomized controlled trial of opioid-agonist pharmacotherapy during pregnancy. The present study examined child growth parameters, cognition, language abilities, sensory processing, and temperament from 0 to 36 months of the child\u27s life. Maternal perceptions of parenting stress, home environment, and addiction severity were also examined. RESULTS: Tests of mean differences between children prenatally exposed to methadone vs. buprenorphine over the three-year period yielded 2/37 significant findings for children. Similarly, tests of mean differences between children treated for NAS relative to those not treated for NAS yielded 1/37 significant finding. Changes over time occurred for 27/37 child outcomes including expected child increases in weight, head and height, and overall gains in cognitive development, language abilities, sensory processing, and temperament. For mothers, significant changes over time in parenting stress (9/17 scales) suggested increasing difficulties with their children, notably seen in increasing parenting stress, but also an increasingly enriched home environment (4/7 scales). CONCLUSIONS: Findings strongly suggest no deleterious effects of buprenorphine relative to methadone or of treatment for NAS severity relative to not-treated for NAS on growth, cognitive development, language abilities, sensory processing, and temperament. Moreover, findings suggest that prenatal opioid agonist exposure is not deleterious to normal physical and mental development
