    An Investigation Into the Electrical Activity of Tender, Resting Paraspinal Muscles Using Surface Electromyography: A Pilot Study

    Abnormal resting paraspinal muscle activity has been claimed to be responsible for changes in spinal tissue texture which are detectible by manual palpation. This pilot study investigated whether there was significant electrical activity in paraspinal musculature that was tender and that appeared to have altered tissue texture on palpation. Sixteen healthy volunteers between 18 and 35 years of age had their thoracic erector spinae mass palpated bilaterally from spinal levels T3 to T10 to identify paraspinal regions exhibiting altered tissue texture relative to the contralateral muscle mass. Surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to measure electrical activity in the muscle mass at the selected levels. No significant differences in electrical activity were observed between the tender and non-tender muscle masses, although a large difference existed in the one symptomatic subject. All muscle sites displayed EMG activity at rest, although the source of activity is not clear. A number of methodological problems with the EMG recording were encountered and are discussed. Future research is recommended using symptomatic participants

    The outcomes of place kicks can have a large impact on Rugby Union match results. This study investigated the ball orientations used in place kicking and their potential implications for success. All 416 place kicks from the 2019 Rugby World Cup were grouped into one of three ball orientation categories, and predicted odds of success were calculated for each category using a binomial logistic regression which accounted for situational factors known to affect performance outcome. Kicks taken using a slanted orientation (n = 152) had the greatest odds of success (90.0%) when taken from the mean tournament distance (29.7 m), compared to a near vertical (n = 116) orientation (84.4%), and near horizontal (n = 148) orientation (86.8%).     Diagnosis of carbonation induced corrosion initiation and progression in reinforced concrete structures using piezo-impedance transducers

    In addition to chloride induced corrosion, the other commonly occurring type of rebar corrosion in reinforced concrete structures is that induced by the ingress of atmospheric carbon dioxide into concrete, commonly referred to as ‘carbonation induced corrosion’. This paper presents a new approach for detecting the onset and quantifying the level of carbonation induced rebar corrosion. The approach is based on the changes in the mechanical impedance parameters acquired using the electro-mechanical coupling of a piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramic patch bonded to the surface of the rebar. The approach is non-destructive and is demonstrated though accelerated tests on reinforced concrete specimens subjected to controlled carbon dioxide exposure for a period spanning over 230 days. The equivalent stiffness parameter, extracted from the frequency response of the admittance signatures of the PZT patch, is found to increase with penetration of carbon dioxide inside the surface and the consequent carbonation, an observation that is correlated with phenolphthalein staining. After the onset of rebar corrosion, the equivalent stiffness parameter exhibited a reduction in magnitude over time, providing a clear indication of the occurrence of corrosion and the results are correlated with scanning electron microscope images and Raman spectroscopy measurements. The average rate of corrosion is determined using the equivalent mass parameter. The use of PZT ceramic transducers, therefore, provides an alternate and effective technique for diagnosis of carbonation induced rebar corrosion initiation and progression in reinforced concrete structures non-destructively

    Exploring children’s views on important park features: A qualitative study using walk-along interviews

    Parks are places where children can interact with others and engage in physical activity in a natural setting. Park visits can enhance children&rsquo;s social, mental, and physical health. It is therefore important to better understand how parks can be designed to ensure optimal use by children. This qualitative study explored children&rsquo;s perceptions of park features that may influence their park visits, park-based physical activity, and social interaction. Qualitative walk-along interviews were completed with 30 children (mean age 9.7 years (SD 1.3), female n = 16) in nine parks located in varying socioeconomic areas of Melbourne, Australia. As they walked through the park, children shared thoughts regarding characteristics that may influence their visitation, park-based physical activity, and social interactions. Features that would encourage visitation included: challenging and interesting play equipment; a pond and water play area; trees/greenery and shade; and full-sized basketball courts. Features most valued for physical activity included: sports courts, ovals, and equipment; open space; trees to climb; and nature/rocks. Features most valued for social interaction included: a large size; playgrounds; and picnic areas. Children offer unique and important views. Park designers should consider inclusion of these features, when (re)developing parks to support children to lead healthy and active lives.</jats:p

    Barriers to SARS-CoV-2 Testing among U.S. Employers in the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Analysis Conducted January through April 2021

    During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. companies were seeking ways to support their employees to return to the workplace. Nonetheless, the development of strategies to support the access, use, and interpretation of SARS-CoV-2 testing was challenging. In the present study, we explore, from the perspective of owners and company leadership, the barriers to SARSCoV-2 testing among U.S. companies. Key informant interviews with company representatives were conducted during January--April 2021 about SARS-CoV-2 testing. A pre-interview survey assessed respondent socio-demographic and organizational characteristics. Interview sessions were transcribed, coded, and analyzed using MaxQDA. A total of twenty interviews were completed with at least two interviews conducted in each major U.S. industry sector. Ninety percent of participants represented companies in business \u3e10 years, comprising both small and large workforces. Using a grounded theory approach, six themes emerged: (1) access to and knowledge of SARS-CoV-2 tests; (2) strategies for symptomatic and asymptomatic testing of workers; (3) type/availability of personal protective equipment to mitigate coronavirus exposures; (4) return-to-work policies; (5) guidance and communication of SARS-CoV-2 Testing; and (6) use of contact tracing and SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Various modifiable and non-modifiable challenges for SARS-CoV-2 testing among U.S. companies were identified and can inform work-related SARS-CoV-2 testing strategies

    A dual process account of creative thinking

    This article explicates the potential role played by type 1 thinking (automatic, fast) and type 2 thinking (effortful, logical) in creative thinking. The relevance of Evans's (2007) models of conflict of dual processes in thinking is discussed with regards to creative thinking. The role played by type 1 thinking and type 2 thinking during the different stages of creativity (problem finding and conceptualization, incubation, illumination, verification and dissemination) is discussed. It is proposed that although both types of thinking are active in creativity, the extent to which they are active and the nature of their contribution to creativity will vary between stages of the creative process. Directions for future research to test this proposal are outlined; differing methodologies and the investigation of different stages of creative thinking are discussed. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC
