A precipitation recycling network to assess freshwater vulnerability : challenging the watershed convention

    Get PDF
Water resources and water scarcity are usually regarded as local aspects for which a watershed-based management appears adequate. However, precipitation, as a main source of freshwater, may depend on moisture supplied through land evaporation from outside the watershed. This notion of evaporation as a local "green water" supply to precipitation is typically not considered in hydrological water assessments. Here we propose the concept of a watershed precipitation recycling network, which establishes atmospheric pathways and links land surface evaporation as a moisture supply to precipitation, hence contributing to local but also remote freshwater resources. Our results show that up to 74% of summer precipitation over European watersheds depends on moisture supplied from other watersheds, which contradicts the conventional consideration of autarkic watersheds. The proposed network approach illustrates atmospheric pathways and enables the objective assessment of freshwater vulnerability and water scarcity risks under global change. The illustrated watershed interdependence emphasizes the need for global water governance to secure freshwater availability

Large area high performance, GaP rectifiers were fabricated by means of Zn diffusion into vapor phase epitaxial GaP. Devices with an active area of 0.01 sq cm typically exhibit forward voltages of 3 volts for a bias current of 1 ampere and have reverse breakdown voltages of 300 volts for temperatures from 27 C to 400 C. Typical device reverse saturation current at a reverse bias of 150 volts is less than 10 to the minus 9th power amp at 27 C and less than 0.000050 amp at 400 C

Interprofessional Education: How Curriculum Influences and Develops Future Healthcare Professionals

The value of higher education is a topic of great consideration and discussion, not only for current and future students, but also for legislators, educators, and employers. A college degree is more than a pathway toward advanced knowledge in a given subject; it is a component of a larger outcome beyond a diploma, it\u27s a job. While the scale of employment opportunities appears to rise for those with a college degree, it is not enough to guarantee security for new graduates, no matter their topic of study. More than a competency in the field of study is required to prove value as a potential employee for these new graduates. The healthcare industry, for example, requires skills beyond the concepts of care delivery. The industry looks for skills sets which may or may not be a part of a college curriculum; critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork capacity, desire for ongoing learning, communication and leadership proficiency (North & Shriver, 2016). This qualitative case study utilized semi-structured interviews to investigate the perceived readiness of new graduates turned employees from health science professional programs of study at the undergraduate level with insight and perspectives of employers and educators. Curricular design and job expectation assessment was the foci of consideration with the survey analysis from individuals within the educator, graduate, and employer groups; creating a comparative look at preparedness in the areas of critical thinking, problem-solving, communication and leadership proficiency. The results of this study provides connectivity which reaches into the foundation of interprofessional education

Peer Socialization for Individuals Who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing

    Get PDF
Peer relationships are needed for positive development, but children who are deaf/hard of hearing (DHH) experience difficulties when socializing with their typically hearing peers. This poster will provide an overview of various supports that can be put in place to facilitate socialization for DHH children with their hearing peers. Opportunities for practitioners and parents to promote peer socialization will be provided.https://griffinshare.fontbonne.edu/slp-posters-2023/1026/thumbnail.jp

Capitalist Divergence and Labour Market Flexibility in the Czech Republic and Hungary: A Comparative Analysis of Standard and Non-Standard Employment

The article presents a comparative analysis of standard & nonstandard employment (part-time employment, fixed-term employment, self-emp1oyment, & employment without a contract) in the Czech Republic & Hungary. It examines what the weight of the various types of employment is, & to what extent standard employment has the same meaning in the two countries. Also, it analyzes what gender, age groups, educational groups, & branches are particularly exposed to flexibility, & what the relationship is between flexibility & income. Finally, it discusses to what extent the differences observed between the two countries are linked to broader labor market developments & to diverse approaches towards the creation of postsocialist capitalism. The analysis shows converging as well as diverging tendencies between the two countries. They have similar levels of standard employment, but standard employment is constituted differently in terms of income, hours worked, & working time patterns. Also, the composition of nonstandard forms of employment & their relationship to income is different. In both countries, standard employment is low in the sectors of agriculture & trade & services, as well as for the young, the old, & the lowly educated. Women have higher rates of standard employment than men. The Czech labor market is however much more 'egalitarian' & the Hungarian one more 'polarized,' while employment is most precarious in Hungary. The differences between the two countries are linked to the stronger market orientation of the Hungarian postsocialist reforms, as well as to the fact that during the 1990s aggregate employment in Hungary fell much more strongly than in the Czech Republic

The Intra- and Inter-Religious Conversions of Nehemiah Nilakantha Goreh

    Get PDF
The life of Nilakantha Goreh contains a wealth of inter-religious and cross-cultural encounters, yet surprisingly little has been written about him. Goreh was a traditionally educated Chitpavan Brahmin, growing up outside the pale of British education and British-influenced Hindu reform movements. His name is best known now for how his initially staunch and public opposition to Christianity slowly gave way until he finally was baptized in 1848. What little scholarship there is on Goreh has tended to either focus on or view his whole life in light of his inter-religious conversion. Although Goreh\u27s inter-religious conversion was undeniably crucial and worthy of attention, it was neither an isolated, aoristic incident in his life nor a dramatic life-climax followed by forty years of denouement. Attending narrowly to his inter-religious conversion risks highlighting only disjunction in the event and neglecting continuities that ran throughout his life. This essay attempts to redress this neglect by proposing a more holistic view of Goreh\u27s religious life. I also hope this discussion might life up Goreh further as a fascinating figure in the history of Hindu-Christian encounter who merits further attention
