    Subgrade geology beneath railways in Manchester

    It is not sufficient to identify fine-grained soils, only, as locations for potential subgrade problems as could be done using a traditional 2D geological map. More information is required about the geological structure, lithological variability, mineralogy, moisture content and geotechnical properties of the soil, much of which can be supplied by modern 3D geospatial databases. These databases can be interrogated at key depths to show the wide variability of geological materials and conditions beneath the ground surface. Geological outcrop and thickness of bedrock an superficial deposits (soils), plus the permeability and water table level are predicted from the Manchester geospatial model that is based on 6500 borehole records. Geological sections along railway routes are modelled and the locations of problem soils such as alluvium, till and glaciolacustrine deposits at outcrop and shallow subcrop are identified. Spatial attribution of geotechnical data and simple methods to recast sections in engineering geological terms are demonstrated

    Influence of the temperature on the depinning transition of driven interfaces

    We study the dynamics of a driven interface in a two-dimensional random-field Ising model close to the depinning transition at small but finite temperatures T using Glauber dynamics. A square lattice is considered with an interface initially in (11)-direction. The drift velocity v is analyzed for the first time using finite size scaling at T = 0 and additionally finite temperature scaling close to the depinning transition. In both cases a perfect data collapse is obtained from which we deduce beta = 1/3 for the exponent which determines the dependence of v on the driving field, nu = 1 for the exponent of the correlation length and delta = 5 for the exponent which determines the dependence of v on T.Comment: 5 pages, Latex, Figures included, to appear in Europhys.     Velocity Fluctuations in Dynamical Fracture: the Role of Microcracks

    We address the velocity fluctuations of fastly moving cracks in stressed materials. One possible mechanism for such fluctuations is the interaction of the main crack with micro cracks (irrespective whether these are existing material defects or they form during the crack evolution). We analyze carefully the dynamics (in 2 space dimensions) of one macro and one micro crack, and demonstrate that their interaction results in a {\em large} and {\em rapid} velocity fluctuation, in qualitative correspondence with typical velocity fluctuations observed in experiments. In developing the theory of the dynamical interaction we invoke an approximation that affords a reduction in mathematical complexity to a simple set of ordinary differential equations for the positions of the cracks tips; we propose that this kind of approximation has a range of usefulness that exceeds the present context.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    Anomalous Height Fluctuation Width in Crossover from Random to Coherent Surface Growths

    We study an anomalous behavior of the height fluctuation width in the crossover from random to coherent growths of surface for a stochastic model. In the model, random numbers are assigned on perimeter sites of surface, representing pinning strengths of disordered media. At each time, surface is advanced at the site having minimum pinning strength in a random subset of system rather than having global minimum. The subset is composed of a randomly selected site and its (1)(\ell-1) neighbors. The height fluctuation width W2(L;)W^2(L;\ell) exhibits the non-monotonic behavior with \ell and it has a minimum at \ell^*. It is found numerically that \ell^* scales as L0.59\ell^*\sim L^{0.59}, and the height fluctuation width at that minimum, W2(L;)W^2(L;\ell^*), scales as L0.85\sim L^{0.85} in 1+1 dimensions. It is found that the subset-size (L)\ell^*(L) is the characteristic size of the crossover from the random surface growth in the KPZ universality, to the coherent surface growth in the directed percolation universality.Comment: 13 postscript file

    THETA-rhythm makes the world go round:dissociative effects of TMS theta versus alpha entrainment of right pTPJ on embodied perspective transformations

    Being able to imagine another person's experience and perspective of the world is a crucial human ability and recent reports suggest that humans "embody" another's viewpoint by mentally rotating their own body representation into the other's orientation. Our recent Magnetoencephalography (MEG) data further confirmed this notion of embodied perspective transformations and pinpointed the right posterior temporo-parietal junction (pTPJ) as the crucial hub in a distributed network oscillating at theta frequency (3-7 Hz). In a subsequent transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) experiment we interfered with right pTPJ processing and observed a modulation of the embodied aspects of perspective transformations. While these results corroborated the role of right pTPJ, the notion of theta oscillations being the crucial neural code remained a correlational observation based on our MEG data. In the current study we therefore set out to confirm the importance of theta oscillations directly by means of TMS entrainment. We compared entrainment of right pTPJ at 6 Hz vs. 10 Hz and confirmed that only 6 Hz entrainment facilitated embodied perspective transformations (at 160° angular disparity) while 10 Hz slowed it down. The reverse was true at low angular disparity (60° between egocentric and target perspective) where a perspective transformation was not strictly necessary. Our results further corroborate right pTPJ involvement in embodied perspective transformations and highlight theta oscillations as a crucial neural code
