Reliability and Robustness in Yield and Input Elasticities for Wetland Rice in Java
This study attempts to address the issues of reliability and robustness in the supply parameters using pooled time series data for wetland rice in Java. In particular, the sensitivity of the yield and input demand elasticities are evaluated due to differences in specification of farmers\u27 expectations variables, alternative data sources, (dis)aggregation of inputs, and functional forms. The analysis indicates that the yield and fertilizer input elasticities are fairly robust across different specifications. However, the estimates of labor demand elasticities are quite sensitive to data and model specifications
Maternal repair system- an analysis in retrospect
Influence of caffeine, cysteine, hydroxyures and cycloherimide on maternal repair system operative in female Drosophila was studied using rod-X males and Oster females. The number of parental matings was kept constant. A new method of statistical analysis was employed to examine the frequency of sex-chromosome loss in these experiments. A re-analysis of published data was also done using this method. The existence of a maternal repair system was not upheld. The observed discrepancies between data reported herein and those published earlier and the possible reasons are discussed
Convergence Rates in L^2 for Elliptic Homogenization Problems
We study rates of convergence of solutions in L^2 and H^{1/2} for a family of
elliptic systems {L_\epsilon} with rapidly oscillating oscillating coefficients
in Lipschitz domains with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. As a
consequence, we obtain convergence rates for Dirichlet, Neumann, and Steklov
eigenvalues of {L_\epsilon}. Most of our results, which rely on the recently
established uniform estimates for the L^2 Dirichlet and Neumann problems in
\cite{12,13}, are new even for smooth domains.Comment: 25 page
Quantitative ecology of phytoplankton in the Cochin backwater
A one-year study on the standing crop in terms of chlorophylls, primary
production and total-cell counts of four station grids has shown that there were
regional and seasonal variations in the magnitude of phytoplankton production in
the Cochin backwater. Statistically treated using a microcomputor, a multiple
regression relationship has been established between parameters within stations.
But th<^ Correlation coefBclent and Standard Regression coefficient have revealed
that the plankton production and the related parameters at all the stations were
independent of each other and the parameters varied from station to station. Probable
reasons are briefly discussed
Maximizing Neumann fundamental tones of triangles
We prove sharp isoperimetric inequalities for Neumann eigenvalues of the
Laplacian on triangular domains.
The first nonzero Neumann eigenvalue is shown to be maximal for the
equilateral triangle among all triangles of given perimeter, and hence among
all triangles of given area. Similar results are proved for the harmonic and
arithmetic means of the first two nonzero eigenvalues
Postmastectomy chest wall radiation of left-sided carcinoma breast - a dosimetric comparison between electrons and photons
Background: For carcinoma breast patients requiring post mastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT), tangential photon beam (PB) is commonly used technique. The physical nature of electrons results in sharp dose fall off and reduces organs at risk (OAR) doses. Aim of the present study is to compare the coverage of chest wall and doses received by OARs – heart and lung between electron and photon beam plans in left sided breast cancer patients requiring PMRT.Methods: This study was done in 22 left sided carcinoma breast patients treated at GSL Medical College between May to December 2017. Both tangential PB plans and electron beam (EB) plans were generated on simulation computed tomography (CT) for each patient and both plans were compared. A dose of 50 Gy was prescribed to planning target volume (PTV) in 25 fractions. Results: The PB plans provided superior homogeneity index (HI) and conformity index CI compared to the EB plans (p<0.05). There was significant difference in favour of electron-beam plans for mean heart dose (p=0.0312), V25 Gy (p=0.029), V45 Gy (p=0.001) and V20 Gy of left lung (p=0.042). There was no significant difference in mean lung dose. Conclusions: Dosimetric data from this study suggests that PMRT with the electron beam can reduce doses to the heart and left lung with acceptable target coverage. It needs further research in the clinical setting
Evaluation of DI engine operations at dual mode: biogas from Tapioca sago sludged poultry manure and tire oil blends
1068-1077This article is focused to analyze the effects in engine operations when different alternative fuels jointly used. Normally biogas from pure sago sludge composed with Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) which lead severe corrosion in engine parts. To reduce this effect, poultry manure (70 wt %) was mixed with sago sludge (30 wt %) for production of biogas. At maximum load, the brake thermal efficiency was found reduced up to 12 % with DTPO30 + biogas and 17 % with diesel + biogas compared to normal diesel operations. The brake specific fuel consumption was higher up to 10 % with distilled tire pyrolysis oil (DTPO30) with biogas operations than diesel with biogas. Reduced NOx about 27 % with DTPO30+ biogas and 21 % with diesel+ biogas than diesel operations. Correspondingly, increased CO was reported with dual fuel mode due to CO2 presence with biogas. Also, increased hydrocarbon and reduced smoke opacity with biogas operations were reported. The H2S effect on engine operation was reduced hence it can increase the engine reliability
Growth of Silicon- Germanium Alloy Layers
Heteroepitaxy techniques for the growth of group IV binary alloys, in particular, SiGe, SiC, GeC and SiSn films are reviewed. Deposition of heteroepitaxial films using various reactors like molecular beam epitaxy, gas source molecular beam epitaxy, and different chemical vapour deposition techniques are compared. Issues related to heteroepitaxial film deposition, such as critical layer thickness are examined. Growth of strained silicon on relaxed SiGe buffer layers, poly-SiGe film and hydrogenated amorphous SiGe (a-SiGe:H) film is also reviewe
Phi-Meson Production at RHIC, Strong Color Fields and Intrinsic Transverse Momenta
We investigate the effects of strong color fields and of the associated
enhanced intrinsic transverse momenta on the phi-meson production in
ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC. The observed consequences
include a change of the spectral slopes, varying particle ratios, and also
modified mean transverse momenta. In particular, the composition of the
production processes of phi mesons, that is, direct production vs.
coalescence-like production, depends strongly on the strength of the color
fields and intrinsic transverse momenta and thus represents a sensitive probe
for their measurement.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Studies on the phytoplankton of the Cochin backwater A tropical estuary
The paper deals with the seasonal and spatial variation of phytoplankton,
based on the observations at four stations (Aroor to Fairway Buoy) in the Cochin
backwater during 1972-73. Two peaks of phytoplankton abundance are usually
observed, with the diatoms playing the major role in determining the pattern of
seasonal variations. An analysis of variance indicates that the spatial variation is
as high as the seasonal variation. The usefulness of chlorophyll a in relation to
the phytoplankton counts as a measure of the phytoplankton abundance has been
studied by using the correlation coefficients; it has been found from an analysis of
covariance that a common relationship exists between phytoplankton and chlorophyll
a for the estuary. The fluctuations in some of the environmental characteristics
have been discussed with their relative influence on thei production of
phytoplankton. In the light of the results obtained, outlines of modifications in the
sampling procedure have been given to the study of phytoplankton production
in the estuary more comprehensive
