An agent-based implementation of hidden Markov models for gas turbine condition monitoring
This paper considers the use of a multi-agent system (MAS) incorporating hidden Markov models (HMMs) for the condition monitoring of gas turbine (GT) engines. Hidden Markov models utilizing a Gaussian probability distribution are proposed as an anomaly detection tool for gas turbines components. The use of this technique is shown to allow the modeling of the dynamics of GTs despite a lack of high frequency data. This allows the early detection of developing faults and avoids costly outages due to asset failure. These models are implemented as part of a MAS, using a proposed extension of an established power system ontology, for fault detection of gas turbines. The multi-agent system is shown to be applicable through a case study and comparison to an existing system utilizing historic data from a combined-cycle gas turbine plant provided by an industrial partner

Artificial Dendritic Computation: The case for dendrites in neuromorphic circuits
Bio-inspired computing has focused on neuron and synapses with great success.
However, the connections between these, the dendrites, also play an important
role. In this paper, we investigate the motivation for replicating dendritic
computation and present a framework to guide future attempts in their
construction. The framework identifies key properties of the dendrites and
presents and example of dendritic computation in the task of sound
localisation. We evaluate the impact of dendrites on an BiLSTM neural network's
performance, finding that dendrite pre-processing reduce the size of network
required for a threshold performance.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. Replacement to correct an author's nam
Direct Imaging Confirmation and Characterization of a Dust-Enshrouded Candidate Exoplanet Orbiting Fomalhaut
We present Subaru/IRCS J band data for Fomalhaut and a (re)reduction of
archival 2004--2006 HST/ACS data first presented by Kalas et al. (2008). We
confirm the existence of a candidate exoplanet, Fomalhaut b, in both the 2004
and 2006 F606W data sets at a high signal-to-noise. Additionally, we confirm
the detection at F814W and present a new detection in F435W. Fomalhaut b's
space motion may be consistent with it being in an apsidally-aligned, non
debris ring-crossing orbit, although new astrometry is required for firmer
conclusions. We cannot confirm that Fomalhaut b exhibits 0.7-0.8 mag
variability cited as evidence for planet accretion or a semi-transient dust
cloud. The new, combined optical SED and IR upper limits confirm that emission
identifying Fomalhaut b originates from starlight scattered by small dust, but
this dust is most likely associated with a massive body. The Subaru and
IRAC/4.5 micron upper limits imply M < 2 Mj, still consistent with the range of
Fomalhaut b masses needed to sculpt the disk. Fomalhaut b is very plausibly "a
planet identified from direct imaging" even if current images of it do not,
strictly speaking, show thermal emission from a directly imaged planet.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures; ApJ Letters in press. Fixed one outdated
