    Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome Caused by a Schwannoma of the Posterior Tibial Nerve

    Schwannoma is the most common tumor of the peripheral nerve sheath. However, there have been few reports on schwannoma of the posterior tibial nerve causing tarsal tunnel syndrome. We report on a 60-year-old man with tarsal tunnel syndrome caused by a schwannoma of the posterior tibial nerve, which was first diagnosed as a ganglion cyst. After enucleation of this tumor, the patient was asymptomatic and had no related sequelae except for minor numbness in the plantar aspects of his digits. Although schwannoma of the posterior tibial nerve is rare, it should be considered even if a ganglion is clinically suspected

    In this paper, I considered Chinese surveys of Daijyo Tokiwa (常盤大定)(1870-1945) and the publication of the results. First, I outlined his Chinese survey. And I conjectured that he decided to publish Shina bukkyo shiseki (支那佛教史蹟), after a result of the Great Kanto Earthquake (関東大震災). I considered the process of translation from Shina bukkyo shiseki to Buddhist monuments in China. I studied the fact that the book was translated by Tokiwa and D.T. Suzuki (鈴木大拙). Further I described the background factors of the publication point of the Shina bunka shiseki (支那文化史蹟) and Chugoku bunka shiseki ( 中国文化史蹟). I pointed out that the situation in each era prompted the publication. Finally I mentioned what the relationship was between Kitaro Nishida (西田幾多郎) and D.T. Suzuki ,who had a connection with Gakushuin (学習院), with Tokiwa.論

    Topographic Survey of the Kaidahara Tumulus No. 29 in Kisa, Miyoshi City <Research and Studies at the Department of Archaeology: Research Note>

    The Kaidahara Tumulus No. 29 is a scallop-shaped burial mound located near the Kisacho area of Miyoshi City, Hiroshima prefecture. As part of field training for the twenty-fourth annual class of archaeology majors at the Hiroshima University School of Letters, we conducted a topographic survey of the area with the aim of creating a detailed survey map of this mound, and to clarify the ranking of Kaidahara tumulus No. 29. The results of this survey indicated that this tumulus is a scallop-shell kofun burial mound, 29 m in length and was constructed in the middle of the 6th century CE. Additionally, we proposed the hypothesis that this tumulus was constructed using the same mound-building techniques as in the case of the Kaidahara tumulus No. 20. Further, we discovered a trend in the scallop-shaped tumuli of the region upstream of the Basen River, whereby, over time, the size of square shaped mounds grew in relation to the round ones

    Exogenous S100A4 Protein Attenuates Bleomycin-induced Pulmonary Fibrosis in Mice by Reducing the Levels of Fibroblast Growth Factors

    Background and objective:The calcium-binding protein S100A4 belongs to the S100 family and is involved in fibrotic and inflammatory processes, in which tissue remodeling, cell motility, and epithelialmesenchymal transition play major roles. Cytoplasmic S100A4 is a marker of lung fibroblasts in pulmonary fibrosis;however, the effects of exogenous S100A4 on fibrotic and inflammatory processes in pulmonary fibrosis are unclear. This study examined the effects of exogenous S100A4 protein in mice with bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis.Methods:Bleomycin was administered to mice by intratracheal instillation on day 1. Intratracheal S100A4 protein was administered 4 times after bleomycin treatment. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was obtained and lung histological examinations were performed on day 14 after bleomycin administration. Lung tissue was homogenized on the same day to assess the mRNA expression of cytokines, fibroblast growth factors, and S100A4.Results:Unexpectedly, we observed that the administration of exogenous S100A4 protein apparently reduced lung fibrosis in bleomycin-treated mice. In addition, the levels of lymphocyte accumulation and insulin-like growth factor-1 mRNA were significantly reduced in bleomycin-treated lung by S100A4 administration.Conclusions:Exogenous S100A4 protein attenuates bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis in mice by reducing lymphocyte function and the levels of fibroblast growth factors

    Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead
