    What is it like to have type-2 blindsight? Drawing inferences from residual function in type-1 blindsight

    Controversy surrounds the question of whether the experience sometimes elicited by visual stimuli in blindsight (type-2 blindsight) is visual in nature or whether it is some sort of non-visual experience. The suggestion that the experience is visual seems, at face value, to make sense. I argue here, however, that the residual abilities found in type-1 blindsight (blindsight in which stimuli elicit no conscious experience) are not aspects of normal vision with consciousness deleted, but are based fragments of visual processes that, in themselves, would not be intelligible as visual experiences. If type-2 blindsight is a conscious manifestation of this residual function then it is not obvious that type-2 blindsight would be phenomenally like vision

    Central mechanisms in the perception of reward

    The perception of reward is crucial in many psychological processes. Wise (1982) has suggested that the neurotransmitter dopamine is involved in producing 'hedonic' responses to rewards. Dopamine is also involved in the control of movement and hunger. Testing dopamine's role in reward perception is therefore complicated by these other actions; the effects of manipulations can often be interpreted as actions on hunger or motor control, rather than on reward. Two methods are described in this thesis which isolate reward effects. The effects of dopaminergic drugs on the rewarding impact of exploration were investigated. The use of exploration eliminates the influence of hunger, while the impact of motor deficits was reduced by using choice measures. Control experiments assessed effects on activity and emotionality. Results indicated that dopamine was involved in exploratory reinforcement independently of its roles in hunger or simple motor control. Tests of whether dopamine is involved in hedonia, or merely in engaging responses to reinforcers, used the 'behavioural contrast' paradigm. Contrast occurs when animals over-react to unexpected changes in reinforcement and allow response elicitation effects to be dissociated from effects on hedonia. Although the dopamine anatagonist a-flupenthixol did not affect contrast induced by changes in reinforcement value, the introduction or withdrawal of the drug could, itself, induce contrast effects. It is concluded that dopamine is involved in hedonia independently of any involvement in response elicitation. A speculative model of the nature of dopamine’s involvement in hedonia is proposed and its implications for our understanding of Parkinson’s disease and schizophrenia, in which dopamine dysfunctions are implicated, are discussed

    Emotion lateralization in a graduated emotional chimeric face task: An online study

    Objective: To resolve inconsistencies in the literature regarding the dominance of the right cerebral hemisphere (RH) in emotional face perception, specifically investigating the role of the intensity of emotional expressions, different emotions, and conscious perception. Method: The study used an online version of the well-established emotional chimeric face task (ECFT) in which participants judged which side of a chimeric face stimulus was more emotional. We tested the laterality bias in the ECFT across six basic emotions and experimentally modified the intensity of the emotional facial expression from neutral to fully emotional expressions, in incremental steps of 20%. Results: The results showed an overall left hemiface bias across all emotions, supporting the RH hypothesis of emotional lateralization. However, the left hemiface bias decreased with decreasing intensity of the emotional facial expression. Conclusions: The results provide further support for the RH hypothesis and suggest that the RH dominance in emotional face perception may be affected by task difficulty and visual perception strategy

    The deep past in the virtual present: developing an interdisciplinary approach towards understanding the psychological foundations of palaeolithic cave art

    Virtual Reality (VR) has vast potential for developing systematic, interdisciplinary studies to understand ephemeral behaviours in the archaeological record, such as the emergence and development of visual culture. Upper Palaeolithic cave art forms the most robust record for investigating this and the methods of its production, themes, and temporal and spatial changes have been researched extensively, but without consensus over its functions or meanings. More compelling arguments draw from visual psychology and posit that the immersive, dark conditions of caves elicited particular psychological responses, resulting in the perception—and depiction—of animals on suggestive features of cave walls. Our research developed and piloted a novel VR experiment that allowed participants to perceive 3D models of cave walls, with the Palaeolithic art digitally removed, from El Castillo cave (Cantabria, Spain). Results indicate that modern participants’ visual attention corresponded to the same topographic features of cave walls utilised by Palaeolithic artists, and that they perceived such features as resembling animals. Although preliminary, our results support the hypothesis that pareidolia—a product of our cognitive evolution—was a key mechanism in Palaeolithic art making, and demonstrates the potential of interdisciplinary VR research for understanding the evolution of art, and demonstrate the potential efficacy of the methodology

    Beyond scattering and absorption: Perceptual un-mixing of translucent liquids

    Is perception of translucence based on estimations of scattering and absorption of light or on statistical pseudocues associated with familiar materials? We compared perceptual performance with real and computer-generated stimuli. Real stimuli were glasses of milky tea. Milk predominantly scatters light and tea absorbs it, but since the tea absorbs less as the milk concentration increases, the effects of milkiness and strength on scattering and absorption are not independent. Conversely, computer-generated stimuli were glasses of “milky tea” in which absorption and scattering were independently manipulated. Observers judged tea concentrations regardless of milk concentrations, or vice versa. Maximum-likelihood conjoint measurement was used to estimate the contributions of each physical component—concentrations of milk and tea, or amounts of scattering and absorption—to perceived milkiness or tea strength. Separability of the two physical dimensions was better for real than for computer-generated teas, suggesting that interactions between scattering and absorption were correctly accounted for in perceptual unmixing, but unmixing was always imperfect. Since the real and rendered stimuli represent different physical processes and therefore differ in their image statistics, perceptual judgments with these stimuli allowed us to identify particular pseudocues (presumably learned with real stimuli) that explain judgments with both stimulus sets

    Aging and the rehabilitation of homonymous hemianopia: The efficacy of compensatory eye-movement training techniques and a five-year follow up

    The specificity and effectiveness of eye-movement training to remedy impaired visual exploration and reading with particular consideration of age and co-morbidity was tested in a group of 97 patients with unilateral homonymous hemianopia using a single subject /n-of-1 design. Two groups received either scanning training followed by reading training, or vice versa. The third group acted as a control group and received non-specific detailed advice, followed by training of scanning and reading. Scanning and reading performance was assessed before and after the waiting period, before and after scanning and reading training, and at short-term (11 weeks on average) and long-term follow-up (5 years on average). Improvements after training were practice-dependent and task-specific. Scanning performance improved by ∌40%, reading by ∌45%, and was paralleled by a reduction of subjective complaints. The advice (=control) condition was without effect. All improvements occurred selectively in the training period, not in treatment-free intervals, and persisted in the short- and long-term follow-up over several years. Age had only a minor, although significant effect on improvement in reading after training; co-morbidity had no significant impact on the outcome of training. In conclusion, visual impairments associated with homonymous hemianopia can be successfully and durably reduced by systematic and specific training of compensatory eye-movement strategies.
