    Aircraft cabin water spray disbenefits study

    The concept of utilizing a cabin water spray system (CWSS) as a means of increasing passenger evacuation and survival time following an accident has received considerable publicity and has been the subject of testing by the regulatory agencies in both the United States and Europe. A test program, initiated by the CAA in 1987, involved the regulatory bodies in both Europe and North America in a collaborative research effort to determine the benefits and 'disbenefits' (disadvantages) of a CWSS. In order to obtain a balanced opinion of an onboard CWSS, NASA, and FAA requested the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group to investigate the potential 'disbenefits' of the proposed system from the perspective of the manufacturer and an operator. This report is the result of a year-long, cost-sharing contract study between the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group, NASA, and FAA. Delta Air Lines participated as a subcontract study team member and investigated the 'return to service' costs for an aircraft that would experience an uncommanded operation of a CWSS without the presence of fire. Disbenefits identified include potential delays in evacuation, introduction of 'common cause failure' in redundant safety of flight systems, physiological problems for passengers, high cost of refurbishment for inadvertent discharge, and potential to negatively affect other safety systems

    Prediction of Nonlinear Propagation of Noise from a Solid Rocket Motor

    Nonlinear acoustic wave propagation predictions (Generalized Burgers equation-based) of noise propagation are compared with measurements from a static, horizontally-fired solid rocket motor over a range of 76-1220 m during an 80 s burn time. The modeling suggests the nature of the geometric spreading between 76 and 305 m varies from cylindrical at low-frequencies to spherical at high frequencies. The predicted waveforms and high-frequency spectral slopes associated with significant shock content are in agreement with properties of the measured noise. At 1220 m, the relatively simple nonlinear model again approximates the measured spectrum despite the complexities of the measurement environment and atmospheric propagation

    Crossover between Thermally Assisted and Pure Quantum Tunneling in Molecular Magnet Mn12-Acetate

    The crossover between thermally assisted and pure quantum tunneling has been studied in single crystals of high spin (S=10) uniaxial molecular magnet Mn12 using micro-Hall-effect magnetometry. Magnetic hysteresis and relaxation experiments have been used to investigate the energy levels that determine the magnetization reversal as a function of magnetic field and temperature. These experiments demonstrate that the crossover occurs in a narrow (0.1 K) or broad (1 K) temperature interval depending on the magnitude of the field transverse to the anisotropy axis.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Environmental Analysis of the Caddo River and its Tributaries: Comparison of Water Quality During 1992 with 1974-75

    Environmental data related to water quality of the Caddo River and its tributaries were collected from March - October, 1992, and compared with data from August, 1974 - May, 1975. Bacterial, chemical and physical parameters were investigated at six river locations and thirteen tributary sites. Ammonia, nitrates, soluble phosphorus, turbidity and fecal coliform were significantly lower, and sodium and potassium were significantly higher in 1992 than during the previous study. Bacterial loading exceeded EPA criteria at some locations during both studies

    Nitrogen and Sulfur Concentrations and Flow Rates of Corn Wet‐Milling Streams

    Nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) concentrations can affect the market value of coproducts from corn wet‐milling. The composition of parent streams would be expected to affect composition of the resulting coproducts but there are few published data available to examine this relationship. Concentration and flow data are needed to determine which streams are important in modifying N and S coproduct concentrations. The objective was to measure concentrations and flows of N and S in corn wet‐milling streams. Samples were taken from 21 process streams from 3 wet‐milling plants during two periods of three weeks each; N and S concentrations of each sample were determined. There were large differences in N and S concentrations among processing streams; within most streams, N and S concentrations were similar among plants. Concentrations of N and S were related inversely to flow rates. Steepwater and gluten streams contained most of the N and S flow and provide an opportunity for modification.     Molecular Epidemiology of Cross-Species Giardia duodenalis Transmission in Western Uganda

    Giardia duodenalis is a common protozoan parasite that infects multiple mammalian species, including humans. We analyzed G. duodenalis from people, livestock, and wild non-human primates in forest fragments near Kibale National Park, western Uganda, where habitat disturbance and human-animal interaction are high. Molecular analyses indicated that endangered red colobus monkeys were infected with G. duodenalis assemblages BIV and E, which characteristically infect humans and livestock, respectively. G. duodenalis infected people at rates of up to 67.5% in one village, and people age 15 years or younger were especially likely to be infected. G. duodenalis infection in people was not associated with other factors related to behavior and hygiene, and infected people were no more likely to have reported gastrointestinal symptoms than were uninfected people. These results demonstrate that G. duodenalis transmission from humans and domestic animals to wildlife may occur with ease in locations such as western Uganda, where habitat disturbance causes ecological overlap among people, livestock, and primates. This conclusion has conservation implications for wildlife such as red colobus, which are already endangered by habitat loss

    Morphologically distinct microtubule ends in the mitotic centrosome of Caenorhabditis elegans

    During mitosis, the connections of microtubules (MTs) to centrosomes and kinetochores are dynamic. From in vitro studies, it is known that the dynamic behavior of MTs is related to the structure of their ends, but we know little about the structure of MT ends in spindles. Here, we use high-voltage electron tomography to study the centrosome- and kinetochore-associated ends of spindle MTs in embryonic cells of the nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans. Centrosome-associated MT ends are either closed or open. Closed MT ends are more numerous and are uniformly distributed around the centrosome, but open ends are found preferentially on kinetochore-attached MTs. These results have structural implications for models of MT interactions with centrosomes
