The Length of an SLE - Monte Carlo Studies
The scaling limits of a variety of critical two-dimensional lattice models
are equal to the Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) for a suitable value of the
parameter kappa. These lattice models have a natural parametrization of their
random curves given by the length of the curve. This parametrization (with
suitable scaling) should provide a natural parametrization for the curves in
the scaling limit. We conjecture that this parametrization is also given by a
type of fractal variation along the curve, and present Monte Carlo simulations
to support this conjecture. Then we show by simulations that if this fractal
variation is used to parametrize the SLE, then the parametrized curves have the
same distribution as the curves in the scaling limit of the lattice models with

Transforming fixed-length self-avoiding walks into radial SLE_8/3
We conjecture a relationship between the scaling limit of the fixed-length
ensemble of self-avoiding walks in the upper half plane and radial SLE with
kappa=8/3 in this half plane from 0 to i. The relationship is that if we take a
curve from the fixed-length scaling limit of the SAW, weight it by a suitable
power of the distance to the endpoint of the curve and then apply the conformal
map of the half plane that takes the endpoint to i, then we get the same
probability measure on curves as radial SLE. In addition to a non-rigorous
derivation of this conjecture, we support it with Monte Carlo simulations of
the SAW. Using the conjectured relationship between the SAW and radial SLE, our
simulations give estimates for both the interior and boundary scaling
exponents. The values we obtain are within a few hundredths of a percent of the
conjectured values
Field dependence of the temperature at the peak of the ZFC magnetization
The effect of an applied magnetic field on the temperature at the maximum of
the ZFC magnetization, , is studied using the recently obtained
analytic results of Coffey et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 80}(1998) 5655) for
the prefactor of the N\'{e}el relaxation time which allow one to precisely
calculate the prefactor in the N\'{e}el-Brown model and thus the blocking
temperature as a function of the coefficients of the Taylor series expansion of
the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The present calculations indicate that even
a precise determination of the prefactor in the N\'{e}el-Brown theory, which
always predicts a monotonic decrease of the relaxation time with increasing
field, is insufficient to explain the effect of an applied magnetic field on
the temperature at the maximum of the ZFC magnetization. On the other hand, we
find that the non linear field-dependence of the magnetization along with the
magnetocrystalline anisotropy appears to be of crucial importance to the

High-resolution width-modulated pulse rebalance electronics for strapdown gyroscopes and accelerometers
Three different rebalance electronic loops were designed, implemented, and evaluated. The loops were width-modulated binary types using a 614.4 kHz keying signal; they were developed to accommodate the following three inertial sensors with the indicated resolution values: (1) Kearfott 2412 accelerometer - resolution = 260 micro-g/data pulse, (2) Honeywell GG334 gyroscope - resolution = 3.9 milli-arc-sec/data pulse, (3) Kearfott 2401-009 accelerometer - resolution = 144 milli-g/data pulse. Corn must necessarily be more freely used than any other concentrated feed for pigs in the Corn Belt, because if properly used it is especially well adapted to pig feeding and can usually be marketed in this way to the very best advantage. But it is generally coming to be recognized that so far as health, thrift and rapidity of gains are concerned, corn alone, at least in dry lot feeding, does not give as satisfactory results, especially for growing pigs, as a combination of corn and some feed adding protein to the ration. Wheat shorts is very commonly considered as the best feed to use with corn for young pigs, but other feeds are. upon the market which contain still larger quantities of protein and their merits for pig feeding deserve investigation. If a small reduction in the cost of feeding each- hog in Iowa can be effected by the judicious uses of these feeds, the aggregate for the state will be enormous. Iowa has 7,947,000 hogs, which, with the exception of Illinois with her 4,684,000, is more than twice as many as any other state and about one-sixth the total number in the United States. During the past season Iowa raised more corn than any other state, the crop being about 388,000,000 bushels. With feeds at the usual prices, it is an easy matter by their judicious selection to so supplement com as to add five to fifteen cents per bushel to the profit from feeding corn, thus effecting a reduction of 50 cents to $1.00 on each 100 lbs. gain in weight by the pigs. In the aggregate, if these modest profits are realized they will amount to millions of dollars to Iowa farmers
C-Terminal truncation of NR2A subunits impairs synaptic but not extrasynaptic localization of NMDA receptors
NMDA receptors interact via the extended intracellular C-terminal domain of the NR2 subunits with constituents of the postsynaptic density for purposes of retention, clustering, and functional regulation at central excitatory synapses. To examine the role of the C-terminal domain of NR2A in the synaptic localization and function of NR2A-containing NMDA receptors in hippocampal Schaffer collateral–CA1 pyramidal cell synapses, we analyzed mice which express NR2A only in its C-terminally truncated form. In CA1 cell somata, the levels, activation, and deactivation kinetics of extrasynaptic NMDA receptor channels were comparable in wild-type and mutant NR2A^(ΔC/ΔC) mice. At CA1 cell synapses, however, the truncated receptors were less concentrated than their full-length counterparts, as indicated by immunodetection in cultured neurons, synaptosomes, and postsynaptic densities. In the mutant, the NMDA component of evoked EPSCs was reduced in a developmentally progressing manner and was even more reduced in miniature EPSCs (mEPSCs) elicited by spontaneous glutamate release. Moreover, pharmacologically isolated NMDA currents evoked by synaptic stimulation had longer latencies and displayed slower rise and decay times, even in the presence of an NR2B-specific antagonist. These data strongly suggest that the C-terminal domain of NR2A subunits is important for the precise synaptic arrangement of NMDA receptors
Exploring Darwin’s Correspondence: Some Important but Lesser Known Correspondents and Projects
This paper explores Darwin\u27s 14,000 plus letters and suggests that in spite of the enormous amount of published material on Darwin and his work, there remains much untapped information in his correspondence. A quantitative analysis of his correspondence, reveals that many of Darwin\u27s most important sources and projects have not been researched. I provide examples in two of his correspondents, William B. Tegetmeier and John Scott, who were extremely important to Darwin\u27s work in domestic animal breeding and plant hybrid studies, respectively. In addition, Darwin\u27s work on seed viability and distribution are discussed to illustrate both the extent of his correspondence network and the complexity of his many sub-projects. The appendices suggest avenues for the further research of Darwin\u27s correspondence by correlating the amount of correspondence with the amount of published material on the correspondents
Making the small oblique parameters large
We compute the oblique parameters, including the three new parameters ,
and introduced recently by the Montreal group, for the case of one
scalar multiplet of arbitrary weak isospin and weak hypercharge . We
show that, when the masses of the heaviest and lightest components of the
multiplet remain constant, but increases, the oblique parameter and
the three new oblique parameters increase like , while only
increases like . For large multiplets with masses not much higher than , the oblique parameters and may become much larger than

Navigation by Induction-Based Magnetoreception in Elasmobranch Fishes
A quantitative frequency-domain model of induction-based magnetoreception is presented for elasmobranch fishes. We show that orientation with respect to the geomagnetic field can be determined by synchronous detection of electrosensory signals at harmonics of the vestibular frequency. The sensitivity required for this compass-sense mechanism is shown to be less than that known from behavioral experiments. Recent attached-magnet experiments have called into doubt the induction-based mechanism for magnetoreception. We show that the use of attached magnets would interfere with an induction-based mechanism unless relative movement between the electrosensory system and the attached magnet is less than 100 μm. This suggests that further experiments may be required to eliminate induction as a basis for magnetoreception
