    A portable battery for objective, non-obstrusive measures of human performances

    The need for a standardized battery of human performance tests to measure the effects of various treatments is pointed out. Progress in such a program is reported. Three batteries are available which differ in length and the number of tests in the battery. All tests are implemented on a portable, lap held, briefcase size microprocessor. Performances measured include: information processing, memory, visual perception, reasoning, and motor skills, programs to determine norms, reliabilities, stabilities, factor structure of tests, comparisons with marker tests, apparatus suitability. Rationale for the battery is provided

    Over the last few years, considerable progress have been made in the development of techniques for fabricating high-quality superconducting circuits, and this success, together with major advances in the theoretical understanding of quantum detection and mixing at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths, has made the development of CAD techniques for superconducting nonlinear circuits an important new enterprise. For example, arrays of quasioptical mixers are now being manufactured, where the antennas, matching networks, filters and superconducting tunnel junctions are all fabricated by depositing niobium and a variety of oxides on a single quartz substrate. There are no adjustable tuning elements on these integrated circuits, and therefore, one must be able to predict their electrical behavior precisely. This requirement, together with a general interest in the generic behavior of devices such as direct detectors and harmonic mixers, has lead us to develop a range of CAD tools for simulating the large-signal, small-signal, and noise behavior of superconducting tunnel junction circuits

    Users manual for the Automated Performance Test System (APTS)

    The characteristics of and the user information for the Essex Automated Performance Test System (APTS) computer-based portable performance assessment battery are given. The battery was developed to provide a menu of performance test tapping the widest possible variety of human cognitive and motor functions, implemented on a portable computer system suitable for use in both laboratory and field settings for studying the effects of toxic agents and other stressors. The manual gives guidance in selecting, administering and scoring tests from the battery, and reviews the data and studies underlying the development of the battery. Its main emphasis is on the users of the battery - the scientists, researchers and technicians who wish to examine changes in human performance across time or as a function of changes in the conditions under which test data are obtained. First the how to information needed to make decisions about where and how to use the battery is given, followed by the research background supporting the battery development. Further, the development history of the battery focuses largely on the logical framework within which tests were evaluated

    Asymptotic behaviour and numerical approximation of optimal eigenvalues of the Robin Laplacian

    We consider the problem of minimising the nth−n^{th}-eigenvalue of the Robin Laplacian in RN\mathbb{R}^{N}. Although for n=1,2n=1,2 and a positive boundary parameter α\alpha it is known that the minimisers do not depend on α\alpha, we demonstrate numerically that this will not always be the case and illustrate how the optimiser will depend on α\alpha. We derive a Wolf-Keller type result for this problem and show that optimal eigenvalues grow at most with n1/Nn^{1/N}, which is in sharp contrast with the Weyl asymptotics for a fixed domain. We further show that the gap between consecutive eigenvalues does go to zero as nn goes to infinity. Numerical results then support the conjecture that for each nn there exists a positive value of αn\alpha_{n} such that the nthn^{\rm th} eigenvalue is minimised by nn disks for all 0<α<αn0<\alpha<\alpha_{n} and, combined with analytic estimates, that this value is expected to grow with n1/Nn^{1/N}
