Ecotourism in biosphere reserves: Practices and attitudes towards conservation?
entrevistas abiertas (n=22) y cuatro grupos focales.
Ecotourism has emerged as a viable option for integrating conservation and socio‑economic
development in protected areas. However, it is important to carry out empirical studies that provide
evidence of its economic viability and environmental sustainability. The primary objective of this study
was to characterise ecotourism as a strategy for conservation and sustainable development in Biosphere
Reserves. To achieve this, we analysed the relationship between the potential benefits and the attitudes
of local communities towards conservation. A mix of methods was used, including a quantitative survey
(n = 138), open interviews (n = 22) and four focal group discussions. The results show that ecotourism has
potential for generating significant economic benefits to the local communities and for encouraging their
participation in conservation initiatives. They also revealed that direct economic incentives are not sufficient
to change residents’ attitudes and practices in favour of conservation

This article seeks to analyze the competitiveness of Mazatlan as a tourist destination through analytical categories and attributes defined so as to take into account its characteristics as a coastal tourist destination and its local context that places it among the most important coastal tourist destinations in Mexico. Thirty-seven attributes are analyzed, grouped into seven categories. The analysis was carried out using a mixed methodological approach with data collected through a survey, interviews, focus groups, and document analysis. The categories of analysis were defined during the focus group discussions and subsequently 152 surveys were administered to tourism stakeholders to collect information about the 37 attributes. Data from interviews and document analysis were used to support and complement the information obtained in the survey. Each of the 37 attributes was analyzed, rated, and coded using a method of points and colors: a traffic light system in which; red indicates priority attention needed for a particular attribute, yellow indicates preventive attention needed, blue indicates positive (good) performance or condition, and green indicates very good condition. According to the results, the four attributes that require priority attention are: improving the accessibility of attractions, the use of mobile applications, strengthening air connectivity and making the political and institutional framework of the destination more efficient. Developing Community Tourism as a Tool for Poverty Alleviation and Socio-Economic Development. a Case Study Of The Bukusu Community In Kenya.
Poverty alleviation and socio-economic development are crucial elements of the millennium development goals and the recently launched vision 2030 by the Kenyan government, community tourism can play a significant role towards their realization and improvement of the socio-economic welfare of the communities living in areas with immense tourism potential. The objectives of this study were therefore to find out how community tourism is helping to alleviate poverty, whether there were challenges facing development of community tourism and how local community support and participate in tourism. The information was obtained from 190 respondents, structured questionnaires were administered to 150 local residents and 20 tourists, 10 managers and 10 opinion leaders were interviewed. The main finding of this study shows that small and medium tourism enterprises create jobs and through this poor families get a source of earning. Insecurity also emerged to be another serious problem, the study revealed that the Bukusu Community supports the idea of community tourism and many are willing to take up responsibilities like local guides and interpreters. In conclusion it was established that the Bukusu region has a diversity of nature based and culture based attractions which if well developed can be used to alleviate poverty and improve socio-economic conditions of the Bukusu people. The proposed recommendation is that in order to promote sustainable tourism development, there is an urgent need for the establishment of institutional and managerial decision strategies (use of local resources, marketing and use of tourism information centers) development. Key words: Bukusu community, Community tourism, Poverty alleviation, Socio-economic development
Resident Attitudes Towards Slum and Dumpsite Tourism: ¿Philanthropy or Strange
Curiosity for Poverty? The present study questioned whether dumpsite and slum visits are a form of philanthropic travel or a mere product of strange curiosity. Host attitudes towards dumpsite and slum
tours in Mazatlán were analysed, respondents included dumpsite workers locally known as
“pepenadores”, as well as residents of four poor neighbourhoods in the outskirts of the city. Mixed
methods were used to collect primary data, they included: a survey, semi-structured in-depth interviews
and participant observation as an auxiliary technique. A total of 140 questionnaires in form of Likert
scale were administered to locals selected randomly, additionally, 11 opinion leaders selected
purposively from the community were interviewed to complement the aforementioned survey data.
Analysis was both quantitative (descriptive and inferential statistics) and qualitative by way of thematic
analysis. Findings indicate that host residents generally hold negative attitudes towards dumpsite and
slum visits. Extrinsic factors like interaction with dumpsite visitors and levels of benefits accruing from
the visits were found to shape perceptions. Findings can help to improve the way these dumpsite and
slum tours are carried out, this is important for the organizers to achieve socioeconomic sustainability
and maintain a harmonious relationship between the hosts and tourists. The study recommends a more
inclusive approach towards slum tourism and more broadly towards Travellers´ Philanthropy programs
to enhance long term benefits and interactions between tourists and the locals.
Analysis and Identification of Sustainable Public Policy for Management of Cultural and Natural Heritage in the Maya Region in Line with the Sustainable Development Goals
The present study identifies suitable sustainable public policy for the administration of archaeological zones in Mexico, particularly in the states of Yucatán, Campeche and Quintana Roo (Maya region). Given the rapid economic growth of the Southeastern region of Mexico, it is necessary to implement a comprehensive and sustainable form of administration for the cultural and archaeological heritage. Key components of the ideal policy are aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Data is based on researchers’ own experiences on how these SDGs can act as a base for the much needed change in the management of Mexico´s archaeological zones. We are looking at a policy that has clear goals, objectives, concrete strategies and actions including: (1) Comprehensive plan, (2) Regional plan, (3) Land use plan—master plan, (4) Cultural tourism plan which covers ecotourism and nature based tourism, art centers, museums and monuments. The resource management plan should cover aspects like: (1) disaster planning, (2) operations and marketing, (3) interpretation, (4) budgetary issues and (5) financing. Success in the implementation of such a policy requires the strengthening of regional and local federalism, transparency, accountability, corporate governance and planning for sustainable cultural tourism development
