Intertidal reef communities of the Marmion & Shoalwater Islands marine parks
Intertidal platform reefs are a distinctive feature of the Perth coastline. Occurring adjacent to shoreline beaches and also as isolated offshore reefs, these limestone platforms have been formed by wave action over many centuries.
Rising and falling tides exert a major influence on the structure of intertidal reef communities, and this influence typically results in a distinctive distribution of organisms based on their tolerance to being exposed to the air when the tide is low. Those inhabiting the highest part of the rocky shore, and therefore exposed more often and for longer periods, are typically hardy, desiccation-resistant species. Those living further seaward are more frequently submerged, although even these organisms may be exposed to the drying sun during particularly low tides, or can be periodically buried by the deposition of shifting beach sand. During winter storms, large waves may crash onto these reefs, stripping away algae and dislodging animals. Yet despite such harsh conditions, intertidal reefs can support a diverse assemblage of algae and invertebrates.
Intertidal reefs are recognised as key ecological values of the Marmion and Shoalwater Islands marine parks that are located adjacent to the Perth metropolitan area. Between 2009 and 2012, marine scientists from DECâs Marine Science Program and the WA Herbarium worked with local marine park staff to survey some of the numerous intertidal reefs in these marine parks to improve our understanding of the communities they support
Hypnosis for acute procedural pain: a critical review
Clinical evidence for the effectiveness of hypnosis in the treatment of acute procedural pain was critically evaluated based on reports from randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs). Results from the 29 RCTs meeting inclusion criteria suggest that hypnosis decreases pain compared to standard care and attention control groups and that it is at least as effective as comparable adjunct psychological or behavioral therapies. In addition, applying hypnosis in multiple sessions prior to the day of the procedure produced the highest percentage of significant results. Hypnosis was most effective in minor surgical procedures. However, interpretations are limited by considerable risk of bias. Further studies using minimally effective control conditions and systematic control of intervention dose and timing are required to strengthen conclusions

Educational weight loss interventions in obese and overweight adults with type 2 diabetes : a systematic review and metaâanalysis of randomized controlled trials
Aim
The worldwide prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus is increasing, with most individuals with the disease being overweight or obese. Weight loss can reduce diseaseârelated morbidity and mortality and weight losses of 10â15 kg have been shown to reverse type 2 diabetes. This review aimed to determine the effectiveness of communityâbased educational interventions for weight loss in type 2 diabetes.
Methods
This is a systematic review and metaâanalysis of randomized controlled trials (RCT) in obese or overweight adults, aged 18â75 years, with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Primary outcomes were weight and/or BMI. CINAHL, MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) were searched from inception to June 2019. Trials were classified into specified a priori comparisons according to intervention type. A pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) (from baseline to followâup) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) between trial groups (differenceâinâdifference) were estimated through randomâeffects metaâanalyses using the inverse variance method. Heterogeneity was quantified using I2 and publication bias was explored visually using funnel plots.
Results
Some 7383 records were screened; 228 fullâtext articles were assessed and 49 RCTs (n = 12 461 participants) were included in this review, with 44 being suitable for inclusion into the metaâanalysis. Pooled estimates of education combined with lowâcalorie, lowâcarbohydrate meal replacements (SMD = â2.48, 95% CI â3.59, â1.49, I2 = 98%) or diets (SMD = â1.25, 95% CI â2.11, â0.39, I2 = 95%) or lowâfat meal replacements (SMD = â1.15, 95%CI â2.05, â1.09, I2 = 85%) appeared most effective.
Conclusion
Lowâcalorie, lowâcarbohydrate meal replacements or diets combined with education appear the most promising interventions to achieve the largest weight and BMI reductions in people with type 2 diabetes

Granitic Boulder Erosion Caused by Chaparral Wildfire: Implications for Cosmogenic Radionuclide Dating of Bedrock Surfaces
Rock surface erosion by wildfire is significant and widespread but has not been quantified in southern California or for chaparral ecosystems. Quantifying the surface erosion of bedrock outcrops and boulders is critical for determination of age using cosmogenic radionuclide techniques, as even modest surface erosion removes the accumulation of the cosmogenic radionuclides and causes significant underestimate of age. This study documents the effects on three large granitic boulders following the Esperanza Fire of 2006 in southern California. Spalled rock fragments were quantified by measuring the removed rock volume from each measured boulder. Between 7% and 55% of the total surface area of the boulders spalled in this single fire. The volume of spalled material, when normalized across the entire surface area, represents a mean surface lowering of 0.7â12.3 mm. Spalled material was thicker on the flanks of the boulders, and the height of the fire effects significantly exceeded the height of the vegetation prior to the wildfire. Surface erosion of boulders and bedrock outcrops as a result of wildfire spalling results in fresh surfaces that appear unaffected by chemical weathering. Such surfaces may be preferentially selected by researchers for cosmogenic surface dating because of their fresh appearance, leading to an underestimate of age
