Characteristics of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in the United States: A Reciprocal Interdependence Analysis

    Get PDF
What common values do diverse Jesuit institutions share? In what ways are Jesuit colleges and universities working to maintain mission, identity, and traditions within the context of 21st-century higher education? To ground their response to these questions, the researchers first review the historical and ecclesial developments that have influenced the mission and identity of Catholic institutions of higher education (IHEs). They discuss the resulting changes in the vision of US Jesuit colleges and universities and trace the impact of the theological shift fostered by Vatican II documents and the Land O’Lakes statement on Catholic colleges and universities in general and Jesuit institutions in particular. Finally, the study critically analyzes the reciprocal interdependence of the seven AJCU characteristics to provide insights and recommendations for implementation of a reimagined articulation of Jesuit, Catholic mission and identity for member institutions, and other Catholic IHEs

Reciprocal Relationships: AJCU Presidents & Rectors

    Get PDF
This study reviews literature pertinent to the changing landscape of leadership at member institutions of higher education in the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) with a view toward revisioning the relationship between presidents and Jesuit superiors. The purpose of this article encourages efforts to foster Jesuit mission and identity during a shift toward increased lay leadership. The research cites related insights from previous studies and mandates from documents of the Society of Jesus that together point to the need for reimagining leadership. The study underscores the importance of fostering relationships of mutuality and reciprocity to ensure the sustaining of the Jesuit mission and identity of AJCU institutions. Finally, the authors conclude with specific recommendations exhorting the enactment of actions that have been recommended or in development during the last twenty years, a period in which a leadership paradigm shift has occurred with the appointment of lay presidents at a majority of the AJCU institutions

THE EFFECT OF STICK CURVATURE ON WRIST SHOT EXECUTION OF PEEWEE AND JUNIOR AGED ICE HOCKEY PLAYERS

    Get PDF
Research on stick curvature is very important to the understanding of its effect on shot velocity and accuracy. In the past, studies have been focused on analysis of stick rigidity, skating and skate design (Lamontagne et aI., 2001). The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the effects of stick curvature on the execution of a wrist shot by Novice, Atom, Peewee, Bantam and Junior aged ice hockey players. For the purpose of this work in progress, only the Peewee and Junior aged players will be included in the data analysis

    Storytelling of Interprofessional Teamwork

    Get PDF
We are an interprofessional team that worked together to discuss and treat a patient suffering from Long COVID-19. At the beginning, we came in with assumptions of other professions and carried our biases into the group. However, as we witnessed these professions interact with our Long COVID-19 patient, Amanda, our views and biases began to change. We were privileged to see how interprofessional teams interact and come together for the betterment of our patient.https://dune.une.edu/cecespring2022/1012/thumbnail.jp

Polygenic risk for schizophrenia and season of birth within the UK Biobank cohort

    Get PDF
Background: There is strong evidence that people born in winter and in spring have a small increased risk of schizophrenia. As this ‘season of birth’ effect underpins some of the most influential hypotheses concerning potentially modifiable risk exposures, it is important to exclude other possible explanations for the phenomenon. Methods: Here we sought to determine whether the season of birth effect reflects gene-environment confounding rather than a pathogenic process indexing environmental exposure. We directly measured, in 136 538 participants from the UK Biobank (UKBB), the burdens of common schizophrenia risk alleles and of copy number variants known to increase the risk for the disorder, and tested whether these were correlated with a season of birth. Results: Neither genetic measure was associated with season or month of birth within the UKBB sample. Conclusions: As our study was highly powered to detect small effects, we conclude that the season of birth effect in schizophrenia reflects a true pathogenic effect of environmental exposure

    Shell forming system

Hollow shells of high uniformity are formed by emitting liquid through an outer nozzle and gas through an inner nozzle, to form a hollow extrusion, by flowing the gas at a velocity between about 1.3 and 10 times the liquid velocity. The natural breakup rate of the extrusion can be increased to decrease shell size by applying periodic perturbations to one of the materials prior to exiting the nozzles, to a nozzle, or to the extrusion

An apparatus is provided for forming gas-filled spheres of metal, glass or other material, which produces spheres (12) of uniform size and wall thickness in a relatively simple system. The system includes concentric nozzles, including an inner nozzle (18) through which gas flows and and an outer nozzle (20), which jointly define an annular passageway (50) through which a liquid flows. The flow rates are adjusted so that the gas flows at greater velocity than does the liquid, out of their respective nozzles, e.g. three times as great, in order to produce an extrusion (30) which undergoes axisymmetric oscillations resulting in the pinch off into hollow spheres with very uniform spacing. The system is useful not only where gas-filled spheres are required, but also is useful to accurately control the dispensing of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials
