    Unplanned Explosions of Munition Stockpiles

    Get PDF
Unplanned explosions at munition sites in places such as Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the United States result in mass casualties to civilians and government personnel. Although new ammunition-storage practices in the United States expanded to include a military role, not all countries have evolved their practices as quickly, leaving them more susceptible to continued explosions. The increasing role of urbanization will make ammunition site management even more important in the 21st century

Yearly cost of the nine major soft contact lens care systems

    Get PDF
The goal of this project is to determine the yearly cost of nine major soft contact lens care systems. Each contact lens system was used by ten subjects over a two-week period. At the end of this period the amount of solution used was determined and extrapolated out to 365 days. Yearly costs were then obtained for each of the of the different contact lens care systems based on three different retailers: a grocery store, pharmacy and department store. The values obtained in this study were then used to compare the cost of contact lens solutions to daily disposable contact lenses. The results showed that the actual amount used and the manufacturer\u27s suggested usage varied greatly. As expected, the results showed that patients use less solution then recommended by the manufacturer or practitioner. The results of this study will allow the practitioner to educate patients on the options and cost of the many different contact lens modalities

Nanowire and core-shell-structures on flexible Mo Foil for CdTe solar cell applications

    Get PDF
CdTe films, nanowires, film-nanowire combinations and CdS-CdTe core-shell structures have been fabricated in a preliminary survey of growth methods that will generate structures for PV applications. Selectivity between film, nanowire and film plus nanowire growth was achieved by varying the pressure of N2 gas present during Au-catalysed VLS growth of CdTe, on either Mo or Si substrates. Metamorphic growth of CdTe nanowires on sputtered CdTe films, deposited on glass substrates, was demonstrated. Coating of CdTe nanowires with CBD CdS gave conformal coverage whereas coating with MOCVD (Cd,Zn)S yielded highly crystallographic dendritic growth on the wires

TRANSFORMING SCHOOLS INTO LEARNING ORGANIZATIONS: SUPPORTS AND BARRIERS TO EDUCATIONAL REFORM

    Get PDF
The outdated manner in which we operate schools is tied to a reality that no longer exists. The society for which we prepare our students has shifted from a factory to a learning organization model. If we hope to prepare our graduates for successful participation in learning organizations we must transform both the structure and culture of our schools. This article summarizes data from 50 New Brunswick schools that are attempting to implement a professional learning community approach. In it we analyze both the strengths and barriers that impact this effort. The findings focus on the culture, leadership, teaching, and the professional growth in these schools. While identifying essential changes they contain promise that the task is achievable

Toward systematic integration between self-determination theory and motivational interviewing as examples of top-down and bottom-up intervention development: autonomy or volition as a fundamental theoretical principle

Clinical interventions can be developed through two distinct pathways. In the first, which we call top-down, a well-articulated theory drives the development of the intervention, whereas in the case of a bottom-up approach, clinical experience, more so than a dedicated theoretical perspective, drives the intervention. Using this dialectic, this paper discusses Self-Determination Theory (SDT) [1,2] and Motivational Interviewing (MI) [3] as prototypical examples of a top-down and bottom-up approaches, respectively. We sketch the different starting points, foci and developmental processes of SDT and MI, but equally note the complementary character and the potential for systematic integration between both approaches. Nevertheless, for a deeper integration to take place, we contend that MI researchers might want to embrace autonomy as a fundamental basic process underlying therapeutic change and we discuss the advantages of doing so
