    Experimental investigation of rotordynamic coefficients for the labyrinth seals with and without shunt injection

    Shunt injection serves an important role in the labyrinth seal static and rotordynamic characteristics which are important in the prediction of turbomachinery stability. This paper analyzed how the shunt injection affects the seal rotordynamic characteristics, and presented an improved impedance method based on unbalanced synchronous excitation to identify the rotordynamic coefficients of labyrinth seals on a rotor test rig. The influences of the rotational speed and the inlet/outlet pressure ratio on the rotordynamic characteristics of shunt injection seals with and without shunt injection were identified and analyzed. The experimental results reveal that all the seal rotordynamic coefficients increase with the rotational speed, and the inlet/outlet pressure ratio. The shunt injection contributes to decreasing the seal cross-coupled stiffness, and increasing the direct damping. The shunt injection plays an important role in decreasing the effective stiffness coefficient, and increasing the effective damping coefficient. The shunt injection can effectively improve the rotor stability. The experimental results lay the foundation for designing the annular seals with shunt injection

    Dynamic Extra Buses Scheduling Strategy in Public Transport

    This paper presents a dynamic extra buses scheduling strategy to improve the transit service of transit routes. In this strategy, in order to decide when to dispatch an extra bus, the service reliability of transit route is assessed firstly. A model aimed at maximizing the benefit of the extra buses scheduling strategy is constructed to determine how many stops extra buses need to skip from the terminal to accommodate passengers at the following stops. A heuristic algorithm is defined and implemented to estimate the service reliability of transit route and to optimize the initial stop of extra buses scheduling strategy. Finally, the strategy is tested on two examples: a simple and a real-life transit route in the Dalian city in China. The results show that the extra buses scheduling strategy based on terminal stops with a reasonable threshold can save 8.01% waiting time of passengers

    Model-based sensor location selection for helicopter gearbox monitoring

    A new methodology is introduced to quantify the significance of accelerometer locations for fault diagnosis of helicopter gearboxes. The basis for this methodology is an influence model which represents the effect of various component faults on accelerometer readings. Based on this model, a set of selection indices are defined to characterize the diagnosability of each component, the coverage of each accelerometer, and the relative redundancy between the accelerometers. The effectiveness of these indices is evaluated experimentally by measurement-fault data obtained from an OH-58A main rotor gearbox. These data are used to obtain a ranking of individual accelerometers according to their significance in diagnosis. Comparison between the experimentally obtained rankings and those obtained from the selection indices indicates that the proposed methodology offers a systematic means for accelerometer location selection

    New insights into the impact of polystyrene micro/nanoplastics on the nutritional quality of marine jacopever (Sebastes schlegelii)

    Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are ubiquitous in the marine environments due to the wide use and mismanagement of plastics. However, the effect of MPs/NPs on the nutrition quality of economic species is poorly understood, and their underlying mechanisms remained unclear. We therefore investigated the impacts of polystyrene MPs/NPs on the nutrition composition of marine jacopever Sebastes schlegelii from the perspective of assimilation and metabolism. Results showed that NPs reduced more nutrition quality than MPs. Despite no notable impact on intestinal microbiota function, MPs/NPs influenced the assimilation of fish through intestinal damage. Furthermore, NPs induced greater damage to hepatocyte metabolism than MPs, caused by hepatocyte uptake through membrane protein pumps/channels and clathrin/caveolin-mediated endocytosis for NPs, while through phagocytosis/pinocytosis for MPs. NPs triggered more cell apoptosis signals in Ferroptosis and FoxO signaling pathways than MPs, destroying mitochondria structure. Compared with MP treatments, a significant upregulation of genes (PRODH and SLC25A25A) associated with the electron transfer chain of mitochondria was detected in the NP treatments, influencing the tricarboxylic acid cycle and interfering with liver metabolism of proteins, fatty acid, glycerol phospholipids, and carbohydrates.     Exploring the key factors affecting the seasonal variation of phytoplankton in the coastal Yellow Sea

    Marine phytoplankton play crucial roles in the ocean’s biological pump and have great impacts on global biogeochemical cycles, yet the knowledge of environmental variables controlling their seasonal dynamics needs to be improved further, especially in the coastal ecosystems. In order to explore the determinants affecting the seasonal variation of phytoplankton, here we conducted three surveys during spring, summer and autumn along the coastal Yellow Sea. Among the phytoplankton community, 49 species of diatoms and 9 species of dinoflagellates were observed in spring, 63 species of diatoms and 10 species of dinoflagellates in summer, and 62 species of diatoms and 11 species of dinoflagellates in autumn. These results thus suggested that there were obvious differences in the number of species across the three seasons, of which diatoms were the most diverse group, followed by dinoflagellates. Additionally, diatoms were the most dominant species of the phytoplankton community and varied largely during different seasons. According to the redundancy analysis, the abundance of phytoplankton community was mainly related to water temperature and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) during the three seasons, indicating that water temperature and DIN could be the key factors controlling the seasonal variability of phytoplankton community along the coastal Yellow Sea. Also, significant correlations were observed between phytoplankton abundance and heavy metals Zn, As, and Hg during the three seasons, suggesting that these metals also had potential influences on the seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton community in the coastal Yellow Sea

    Rhizosphere phage communities drive soil suppressiveness to bacterial wilt disease

    Publisher Copyright: © 2023, The Author(s).Background: Bacterial viruses, phages, play a key role in nutrient turnover and lysis of bacteria in terrestrial ecosystems. While phages are abundant in soils, their effects on plant pathogens and rhizosphere bacterial communities are poorly understood. Here, we used metagenomics and direct experiments to causally test if differences in rhizosphere phage communities could explain variation in soil suppressiveness and bacterial wilt plant disease outcomes by plant-pathogenic Ralstonia solanacearum bacterium. Specifically, we tested two hypotheses: (1) that healthy plants are associated with stronger top-down pathogen control by R. solanacearum-specific phages (i.e. ‘primary phages’) and (2) that ‘secondary phages’ that target pathogen-inhibiting bacteria play a stronger role in diseased plant rhizosphere microbiomes by indirectly ‘helping’ the pathogen. Results: Using a repeated sampling of tomato rhizosphere soil in the field, we show that healthy plants are associated with distinct phage communities that contain relatively higher abundances of R. solanacearum-specific phages that exert strong top-down pathogen density control. Moreover, ‘secondary phages’ that targeted pathogen-inhibiting bacteria were more abundant in the diseased plant microbiomes. The roles of R. solanacearum-specific and ‘secondary phages’ were directly validated in separate greenhouse experiments where we causally show that phages can reduce soil suppressiveness, both directly and indirectly, via top-down control of pathogen densities and by alleviating interference competition between pathogen-inhibiting bacteria and the pathogen. Conclusions: Together, our findings demonstrate that soil suppressiveness, which is most often attributed to bacteria, could be driven by rhizosphere phage communities that regulate R. solanacearum densities and strength of interference competition with pathogen-suppressing bacteria. Rhizosphere phage communities are hence likely to be important in determining bacterial wilt disease outcomes and soil suppressiveness in agricultural fields.     HTsort: Enabling Fast and Accurate Spike Sorting on Multi-Electrode Arrays

    Spike sorting is used to classify the spikes (action potentials acquired by physiological electrodes), aiming to identify their respective firing units. Now it has been developed to classify the spikes recorded by multi-electrode arrays (MEAs), with the improvement of micro-electrode technology. However, how to improve classification accuracy and maintain low time complexity simultaneously becomes a difficulty. A fast and accurate spike sorting approach named HTsort is proposed for high-density multi-electrode arrays in this paper. Several improvements have been introduced to the traditional pipeline that is composed of threshold detection and clustering method. First, the divide-and-conquer method is employed to utilize electrode spatial information to achieve pre-clustering. Second, the clustering method HDBSCAN (hierarchical density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise) is used to classify spikes and detect overlapping events (multiple spikes firing simultaneously). Third, the template merging method is used to merge redundant exported templates according to the template similarity and the spatial distribution of electrodes. Finally, the template matching method is used to resolve overlapping events. Our approach is validated on simulation data constructed by ourselves and publicly available data and compared to other state-of-the-art spike sorters. We found that the proposed HTsort has a more favorable trade-off between accuracy and time consumption. Compared with MountainSort and SpykingCircus, the time consumption is reduced by at least 40% when the number of electrodes is 64 and below. Compared with HerdingSpikes, the classification accuracy can typically improve by more than 10%. Meanwhile, HTsort exhibits stronger robustness against background noise than other sorters. Our more sophisticated spike sorter would facilitate neurophysiologists to complete spike sorting more quickly and accurately

    Identifying barriers to the care of the rheumatoid hand in China: comparing attitudes of rheumatologists and hand surgeons

    AimIn China, hand surgeons treat fewer rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients compared to other countries. We investigated whether physician and surgeon knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding RA hand deformities reflect current evidence and may contribute to the low utilization of surgery.MethodWe surveyed hand surgeons and rheumatologists at three tertiary hospitals in Beijing, China. Questionnaires were developed from literature and expert review to assess their knowledge, attitudes and practice patterns related to rheumatoid hand surgery.ResultsThirtyâ five hand surgeons and 59 rheumatologists completed the survey. Roughly oneâ third felt that the rheumatologists and hand surgeons agree on how to manage RA hand deformities. Oneâ fifth of rheumatologists and 29% of hand surgeons believed that drug therapy can correct hand deformities, which contradicts current evidence. Likewise, 30% and 14%, respectively, recommended surgery for earlyâ stage hand sequelae that do not meet current indications for surgery. Over 80% of surgeons and rheumatologists had no exposure to the other specialty during training and felt their training on the treatment of rheumatoid hand deformities was inadequate.ConclusionAlthough we found similar interspeciality disagreement in China as is seen in the United States, there appears to be less interaction through training and consultations. Our results also indicate potential deficits in training and unawareness of evidence and indications for rheumatoid hand surgery.
