    Trauma and Pastoral Care

    Get PDF
Trauma occurs on a daily basis in the life of every individual. Some of these traumas are so severe they impact the development of life and faith. Some traumas are small and barely leave a mark. According to the American Psychiatric Association, 1 in 11 people will be diagnosed with PTSD, not including those undiagnosed or who endure trauma without experiencing PTSD. Those who experience trauma often feel trapped in their own little worlds. The walls are tight around them, no one understands what is going on with them because there is no words to express it, and they feel completely forgotten in the fold of life. Even the central event of Christianity, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, is an extremely traumatizing event. This is why the church should care about the traumatized. Their congregants are enduring these traumas, they are longing for a place that can be safe and supported in their journey. The people are longing for someone to break into their brokenness and help them escape. But how do we do this in a way that doesn’t harm? By having the knowledge of trauma and trauma care, churches can help survivors move past their trauma into the life Christ has for them. This research dove into the way theology and Christology one holds can impact the traumatized, how power and trauma-care go hand in hand, and some of the ways this information is important to providing good pastoral, and non-pastoral, care to the traumatized

Students with Autism and Aggressive Behavior: A Review of Evidence-Based Interventions

    Get PDF
Aggression can be present in students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and may need to be considered within academic environments. Interventions that are evidence-based have been identified to assist educators with issues with aggression in students with ASD. This review of evidence-based interventions highlights the effectiveness and social validity within educational settings that may be useful to instructors and other educational staff. Teachers need to be equipped with interventions that are considered to be effective and easy to implement within the school system. The literature available about the evidence based interventions for students with ASD are limited when the environmental setting is specified, so this review expanded to clinical and community settings. The current review provides an examination of interventions that can applied within the school setting and may be considered a resource for educators, as it emphasizes details that are vital to implementation in public school settings that may not have access to behavioral analysts and instructional assistants with specialized training

    Flexible Custom Electric Skateboard

At Cal Poly traveling long distances only accessible by foot such as across campus or from the car park to class can be tiring and time-consuming. While not physically demanding, the trek consumes time in our tight college life schedule. To improve our time efficiency this project provides a relatively lightweight, powered solution to quickly and effectively travel long distances while maintaining full control and safety even on hills, a current limitation of traditional skateboards. This electric skateboard includes the battery capacity to travel all around campus on a single charge with a compact and flexible skateboard design that provides extended range without compromising on rider comfort. It includes regenerative braking for on-demand stopping and safe travel down even the steepest hills on campus using a wireless controller

Areas of burden for primary caregivers of spouses afflicted with Alzheimer\u27s disease

The burden felt by caregivers of Alzheimer\u27s victims was a concern of medical professionals. The intent of this project was to establish the degree to which in-home caregivers who were related to the victims felt burdened. To accomplish this, the researcher explored three important questions: 1. did the test results reveal the same amount of burden as was self-reported?, 2. did the age or sex of the caregiver or length of caregiving show any relationship to the amount of burden felt?, 3. did spouse or child caregivers reveal the higher amount of burden? In a review of literature, the researcher examined two important issues in light of the research questions. Those issues included a discussion of Alzheimer\u27s as a disease and the treatment of its victims. The researcher also discussed those issues in relationship to the changing understanding of the disease and the various theories regarding its treatment. In addition, both issues were included in a discussion of historical, philosophical, sociological and psychological foundation perspectives. The researcher described in detail what happened during the course of this project. Through the results of the interview, it was discovered that caregivers of Alzheimer\u27s afflicted relatives reported moderate to severe feelings of burden. It was also found that daughters caring for fathers and husbands caring for wives revealed a higher degree of burden than wives caring for husbands or daughters caring for mothers. After completion of this project, the researcher made recommendations for further support systems for the caregivers as well as additional educational opportunities. Until a cure was found, research was continued

ARGUING THE JUST WAR IN ISLAM

One of the magnitude effect of the horrific 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States and the subsequent war against terror campaign is a political rhetoric that divides the international world into two rigid poles,” the evil terrorist” in one side and the “righteous, just enlightened victim” in the other. The United States administration has succeeded in placing itself as the protagonist side and its rally for retaliatory war campaign has not only gained international support but also affirmed its position as the leader of the ‘the key-holder of freedom, liberty and humanity’, who waged war against the barbaric evil terrorists. By calling ‘either with us or against us’, the US leaves no room for the rests of the world to be in ‘grey’ area. Those who are not in favor will be considered as enemy and therefore deserve to be punished

The Empower Action Model: A Framework for Preventing Adverse Childhood Experiences by Promoting Health, Equity, and Well-Being Across the Life Span

    Get PDF
The empower action model addresses childhood adversity as a root cause of disease by building resilience across multiple levels of influence to promote health, equity, and well-being. The model builds on the current evidence around adverse childhood experiences and merges important frameworks within key areas of public health—the socio-ecological model, protective factors, race equity and inclusion, and the life course perspective. The socio-ecological model is used as the foundation for this model to highlight the multilevel approach needed for improvement in public health. Five key principles that build on the protective factors literature are developed to be applied at each of the levels of the socio-ecological model: understanding, support, inclusion, connection, and growth. These principles are developed with actions that can be implemented across the life span. Finally, actions suggested with each principle are grounded in the tenets of race equity and inclusion, framing all actionable steps with an equity lens. This article discusses the process by which the model was developed and provides steps for states and communities to implement this tool. It also introduces efforts in a state to use this model within county coalitions through an innovative use of federal and foundation funding
