    Challenges related to teaching and learning are often discussed among faculty. Student input is often sparse and subject to volunteer bias, resulting in feedback that is likely not representative. Furthermore, there is also anecdotal evidence that public health faculty have strong views regarding teaching and learning topics, particularly when it comes to online instruction for courses with rigorous methodologic or analytic content, and there are concerns student performance may differ based on course modality. In an effort to draw evidence-based conclusions based on non-anecdotal data, a public health student and faculty dataset creation and analysis model is explored

    The association of seasonal influenza vaccination with pandemic influenza H1N1 2009 infection

    Letter to the editor; Comment on Vaccine. 2011 Nov 15, v. 29 n. 49, p. 9194-200In 2010 Skowronski and colleagues reported that seasonal influenza vaccine appeared to increase the risk of pandemic influenza H1N1 2009 (pH1N1) infection during the first pandemic wave in Canada [1]. They suggested a number of possible explanations for their unexpected finding: firstly, that the results were an artefact of selection bias or confounding; secondly, that the results were due to partial mediation through a biological mechanism; and thirdly, that the results were due to a direct immune mechanism, such as antibody dependent enhancement [1]. In a recent paper in Vaccine, Rosella and colleagues have investigated in detail the first of these possibilities, confirming that it is unlikely an unidentified confounder could have explained the findings [2]. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.postprin

    Toward curriculum convergence for graduate learning outcomes: academic intentions and student experiences

    Graduate learning outcomes in undergraduate science degrees increasingly are focussed on the development of transferrable skillsets. Research into, and comparisons of, the perceptions of students and academic staff on such learning outcomes has rarely been explored in science. This study used a quantitative survey to explore the perceptions of 640 undergraduate science students and 70 academics teaching into a Bachelor of Science degree program on the importance, the extent to which outcomes were included and assessed, the improvement and likely future use of science graduate learning outcomes. Analysis of findings shed light on potential pathways toward curriculum convergence by arguing the need for shared perspectives of academics and students on graduate learning outcomes and drawing on the planned-enacted-experienced curriculum model. Moving toward coherent curriculum planning that draws on both student and academic perspectives to achieve graduate learning outcomes is the key contribution of this study. Resulting recommendations include: the need to consider the development of each complex graduate learning outcome as distinct from other outcomes in both curricular and pedagogical approach, and the need for a programmatic framework for assessment practices to facilitate the constructive alignment of assessment with learning outcomes

    Modelling the effect of seasonal influenza vaccination on the risk of pandemic influenza infection

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Recent studies have suggested that vaccination with seasonal influenza vaccine resulted in an apparent higher risk of infection with pandemic influenza H1N1 2009. A simple mathematical model incorporating strain competition and a hypothesised temporary strain-transcending immunity is constructed to investigate this observation. The model assumes that seasonal vaccine has no effect on the risk of infection with pandemic influenza.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Results of the model over a range of reproduction numbers and effective vaccination coverage confirm this apparent increased risk in the Northern, but not the Southern, hemisphere. This is due to unvaccinated individuals being more likely to be infected with seasonal influenza (if it is circulating) and developing hypothesised temporary immunity to the pandemic strain. Because vaccinated individuals are less likely to have been infected with seasonal influenza, they are less likely to have developed the hypothesised temporary immunity and are therefore more likely to be infected with pandemic influenza. If the reproduction number for pandemic influenza is increased, as it is for children, an increase in the apparent risk of seasonal vaccination is observed. The maximum apparent risk effect is found when seasonal vaccination coverage is in the range 20-40%.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Only when pandemic influenza is recently preceded by seasonal influenza circulation is there a modelled increased risk of pandemic influenza infection associated with prior receipt of seasonal vaccine.</p

    Australia`s box - ironbark forests and woodlands : saving the fragments of a threatened ecosystem

    Australia\u27s box-ironbark forests and woodlands once covered about 14 per cent of the State of Victoria on the riverine plains and foothills of the Great Dividing Range. But approximately 83 per cent of the total original habitat has been destroyed and what remains of this significant ecosystem is now highly fragmented and vulnerable to further degradation. Moreover, only 14 per cent of the area remaining is on public land. A 10 year campaign on the part of the environmental movement eventually succeeded in forcing the State government to conduct an independent inquiry into this ecosystem and make recommendations on future management. This paper outlines the innovative public participation process adopted by the Victorian State government and the outcomes of the inquiry. A subsequent compensation package for commercial operations disadvantaged by the proclamation of a series of new national parks is also discussed, as are the shortcomings of a process that can have little or no impact on what happens on private land.<br /

    Behavior Change Techniques Present in Wearable Activity Trackers: A Critical Analysis

Most adults do not meet their recommended daily activity guidelines, and wearable fitness trackers are increasingly cited as having great potential to improve the physical activity levels of adults. Objective: The objective of this study was to use the Coventry, Aberdeen, and London-Refined (CALO-RE) taxonomy to examine if the design of wearable activity trackers incorporates behavior change techniques (BCTs). A secondary objective was to critically analyze whether the BCTs present relate to known drivers of behavior change, such as self-efficacy, with the intention of extending applicability to older adults in addition to the overall population. Methods: Wearing each device for a period of 1 week, two independent raters used CALO-RE taxonomy to code the BCTs of the seven wearable activity trackers available in Canada as of March 2014. These included Fitbit Flex, Misfit Shine, Withings Pulse, Jawbone UP24, Spark Activity Tracker by SparkPeople, Nike+ FuelBand SE, and Polar Loop. We calculated interrater reliability using Cohen's kappa. Results: The average number of BCTs identified was 16.3/40. Withings Pulse had the highest number of BCTs and Misfit Shine had the lowest. Most techniques centered around self-monitoring and self-regulation, all of which have been associated with improved physical activity in older adults. Techniques related to planning and providing instructions were scarce. Conclusions: Overall, wearable activity trackers contain several BCTs that have been shown to increase physical activity in older adults. Although more research and development must be done to fully understand the potential of wearables as health interventions, the current wearable trackers offer significant potential with regard to BCTs relevant to uptake by all populations, including older adults

    Type of Physical Activity in Active Individuals Leads to Differences in Strength

    The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a very commonly injured ligament in the knee. Typically, the injuries require reconstruction surgery and rehabilitation. The goal of rehab is to achieve the same level of ability and strength as prior to the injury. PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to investigate activity and strength in individuals who have undergone ACL reconstruction and healthy control participants. We aimed to determine the strength differences between participants who do intentional workouts versus those who live an active lifestyle and to determine whether activity alters strength measures. METHODS: Using existing data, participants were selected to create two groups based on their reported activity, but not injury status. Participants were included if they were considered to be highly active based on the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The participants were then sorted into two groups based of their total minutes of involved activity: those who have \u3e40% a week involvement in purposeful exercise and those who participate in 20% or less of purposeful exercise. Peak knee extensor and flexor torque values (Nm/kg) were collected using a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer at 60 degrees/sec and 180 degrees/sec. Due to small sample size, Cohen’s d effect sizes were calculated to compare strength between groups. RESULTS: There was a moderate effect size between groups in knee extensor strength at both velocities. At 180 deg/sec relative knee extensor strength was greater in the group of individuals who had less purposeful activity (Table 1). Similarly, at 180 deg/sec, there was a large effect between groups in knee flexor strength. Individuals who were categorized as spending a larger percentage of activity with purposeful exercise happened to also be participants who had undergone ACL reconstruction, and those who had less purposeful exercise were the healthy controls. CONCLUSION: Although participants with ACL reconstructions participated in more frequent and purposeful exercise, the healthy control participants, who were less purposeful with exercise, showed greater measures of strength. ACL reconstruction status impacted knee strength to an extent that purposeful exercise was unable to overcome

    The impact of simulated motion blur on lesion detection performance in full field digital mammography

    Objective: Motion blur is a known phenomenon in full-field digital mammography, but the impact on lesion detection is unknown. This is the first study to investigate detection performance with varying magnitudes of simulated motion blur. Method: Seven observers (15±5 years’ reporting experience) evaluated 248 cases (62 containing malignant masses, 62 containing malignant microcalcifications and 124 normal cases) for three conditions: no blurring (0 mm) and two magnitudes of simulated blurring (0.7 mm and 1.5 mm). Abnormal cases were biopsy proven. Mathematical simulation was used to provide a pixel shift in order to simulate motion blur. A free-response observer study was conducted to compare lesion detection performance for the three conditions. The equally weighted jackknife alternative free-response receiver operating characteristic (wJAFROC) was used as the figure of merit. Test alpha was set at 0.05 to control probability of Type I error. Results: wJAFROC analysis found a statistically significant difference in lesion detection performance for both masses (F(2,22) = 6.01, P=0.0084) and microcalcifications (F(2,49) = 23.14, P&lt;0.0001). The figures of merit reduced as the magnitude of simulated blurring increased. Statistical differences were found between some of the pairs investigated for the detection of masses (0.0mm v 0.7mm, and 0.0mm v 1.5mm) and all pairs for microcalcifications (0.0 mm v 0.7 mm, 0.0 mm v 1.5 mm, and 0.7 mm v 1.5 mm). No difference was detected between 0.7 mm and 1.5 mm for masses. Conclusion: Mathematical simulation of motion blur caused a statistically significant reduction in lesion detection performance. These false negative decisions could have implications for clinical practice.
