Impact of residential energy system sizing and control over heat pump’s system cost and reliability

    Get PDF
Using a simulation-based approach, this work analyses the impact that different energy unit sizes and control methodologies will have over the capital and running costs of an air source heat pump (ASHP) system to be installed in a refurbished dwelling. A total of 9 different heating configuration options were investigated and the cumulative cash flow over a period of 10 years (including initial investment) was utilized to compare the systems from a customer perspective. Additionally, in selected cases, the cycling of the heat pump was calculated in order to estimate the life-span of the device. The building and heat pump systems were simulated using TRNSYS energy system models. The results revealed the sensitivity of the system’s costs and life-span to its operating characteristics. For example, operating the system as a direct gas boiler replacement resulted in capital costs above £10,000 and the unit's life span reduced by half in comparison to more favourable operational strategies. The results highlight the fact that the successful technical and financial performance of heat pumps within the UK’s residential market will depend of designers, installers and end-users’ awareness regarding optimal operational strategies for this technology

    The Evolution of Technology

As per outlined by Dr. Quinn, this literature review will be a comprehensive review paper including an overview of current and previous research done in the field of Memetics. This will further include sifting through literature to hone in on a specific, new area of memetics Dr. Weeks is focused on, the evolutionary change of abiotic factors through purchasing. This is to be completed with the help of the library worshops designed to teach the skills necessary to undergo a literature review of this size. I will also participate in weekly reading groups to discuss papers and work closely with graduate assistants and Dr. Weeks to make sure I am on the right track. This is to be completed well before the April 23rd deadline in order to allow the readers plenty of time to read and make suggestions

Rotary echo tests of coherence in Rydberg-atom excitation

Rotary echoes are employed to study excitation dynamics in many-body Rydberg systems. In this method, a phase reversal of a narrow-band excitation field is applied at a variable time during the excitation pulse. The visibility of the resulting echo signal reveals the degree of coherence of the excitation process. Rotary echoes are measured for several n D 5/2 Rydberg levels of rubidium with principal quantum numbers near n =43, where the strength of electrostatic Rydberg-atom interactions is modulated by a Forster resonance. The Rydberg-atom interactions are shown to diminish the echo visibility, in agreement with recent theoretical work. The equivalence of echo signals with spectroscopic data is demonstrated.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/65087/2/njp9_4_043006.pd

An exploratory qualitative study of values issues associated with training and practice in pluralistic counselling

    Get PDF
Background: A pluralistic model of practice has become increasingly influential in recent years. A distinctive feature of this approach is its explicit grounding within a philosophical and moral perspective.Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate issues and challenges that pluralistic counsellors experience in relation to values dilemmas that arise in practice.Methodology: Twelve practitioners, of various experience levels, who identified as pluralistic counsellors, were invited to take part in semi-structured interviews. Transcripts were analysed using a method of thematic analysis.Findings: Participants viewed their personal values to be compatible with the values that they perceived pluralistic counselling to hold, and reported that they chose pluralism as a modality because they found a similarity between their personal values and the values of pluralistic counselling. Core values associated with pluralistic practice included the following: the importance of connection, ‘there is no one right way to be’, equality (not taking an expert role), honesty, and willingness to make use of research evidence. Participants also described value dilemmas, and their use of supervision in dealing with value issues.Implications: The implications of these findings for training, research and practice are discussed

Pedagogical Research on Arts-Based Qualitative Research

This panel discusses various ways in which to incorporate arts-based strategies within a traditional qualitative research design, in order to generate additional data, address researcher bias, deepen qualitative analysis, and enhance the presentation of research findings. The presentation will also discuss how to teach such creative combinations in qualitative research courses, with examples of bracketing collages and found data poetry created by students in a doctoral program in conflict analysis and resolution. Finally, the panel will discuss a pedagogical research project which encompassed designing a multiple case study to explore the experience and outcomes of two phenomenological studies related to identity-based conflict, one of which used traditional phenomenological methods, and the other of which included arts-based techniques
