Nonlocal Gravity: Modified Poisson's Equation
The recent nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation
reduces in the Newtonian regime to a nonlocal and nonlinear modification of
Poisson's equation of Newtonian gravity. The nonlocally modified Poisson
equation implies that nonlocality can simulate dark matter. Observational data
regarding dark matter provide limited information about the functional form of
the reciprocal kernel, from which the original nonlocal kernel of the theory
must be determined. We study this inverse problem of nonlocal gravity in the
linear domain, where the applicability of the Fourier transform method is
critically examined and the conditions for the existence of the nonlocal kernel
are discussed. This approach is illustrated via simple explicit examples for
which the kernels are numerically evaluated. We then turn to a general
discussion of the modified Poisson equation and present a formal solution of
this equation via a successive approximation scheme. The treatment is
specialized to the gravitational potential of a point mass, where in the linear
regime we recover the Tohline-Kuhn approach to modified gravity.Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures; v2: minor improvements, accepted for publication

Oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau) boatwhistle call detection and patterns within a large-scale oyster restoration site
During May 2015, passive acoustic recorders were deployed at eight subtidal oyster reefs within Harris Creek Oyster Sanctuary in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland USA. These sites were selected to represent both restored and unrestored habitats having a range of oyster densities. Throughout the survey, the soundscape within Harris Creek was dominated by the boatwhistle calls of the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau. A novel, multi-kernel spectral correlation approach was developed to automatically detect these boatwhistle calls using their two lowest harmonic bands. The results provided quantitative information on how call rate and call frequency varied in space and time. Toadfish boatwhistle fundamental frequency ranged from 140 Hz to 260 Hz and was well correlated (r = 0.94) with changes in water temperature, with the fundamental frequency increasing by similar to 11 Hz for every 1 degrees C increase in temperature. The boatwhistle call rate increased from just a few calls per minute at the start of monitoring on May 7 th to similar to 100 calls/min on May 10 th and remained elevated throughout the survey. As male toadfish are known to generate boatwhistles to attract mates, this rapid increase in call rate was interpreted to mark the onset of spring spawning behavior. Call rate was not modulated by water temperature, but showed a consistent diurnal pattern, with a sharp decrease in rate just before sunrise and a peak just after sunset. There was a significant difference in call rate between restored and unrestored reefs, with restored sites having nearly twice the call rate as unrestored sites. This work highlights the benefits of using automated detection techniques that provide quantitative information on species-specific call characteristics and patterns. This type of non-invasive acoustic monitoring provides longterm, semi-continuous information on animal behavior and abundance, and operates effectively in settings that are otherwise difficult to sample
Stability of the Excitonic Phase in Bilayer Quantum Hall Systems at Total Filling One -- Effects of Finite Well Width and Pseudopotentials --
The ground state of a bilayer quantum Hall system at with
model pseudopotential is investigated by the DMRG method. Firstly,
pseudopotential parameters appropriate for the system with finite layer
thickness are derived, and it is found that the finite thickness makes the
excitonic phase more stable. Secondly, a model, where only a few
pseudopotentials with small relative angular momentum have finite values, is
studied, and it is clarified how the excitonic phase is destroyed as
intra-layer pseudopotential becomes larger. The importance of the intra-layer
repulsive interaction at distance twice of the magnetic length for the
destruction of the excitonic phase is found.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Phylogenetic inferences of Atelinae (Platyrrhini) based on multi-directional chromosome painting in Brachyteles arachnoides, Ateles paniscus paniscus and Ateles b. marginatus
We performed multi-directional chromosome painting in a comparative cytogenetic study of the three Atelinae species Brachyteles arachnoides, Ateles paniscus paniscus and Ateles belzebuth marginatus, in order to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships within this Platyrrhini subfamily. Comparative chromosome maps between these species were established by multi-color fluorescence in situ hybridization ( FISH) employing human, Saguinus oedipus and Lagothrix lagothricha chromosome-specific probes. The three species included in this study and four previously analyzed species from all four Atelinae genera were subjected to a phylogenetic analysis on the basis of a data matrix comprised of 82 discrete chromosome characters. The results confirmed that Atelinae represent a monophyletic clade with a putative ancestral karyotype of 2n = 62 chromosomes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed an evolutionary branching sequence \{Alouatta \{Brachyteles \{Lagothrix and Ateles\}\}\} in Atelinae and \{Ateles belzebuth marginatus \{Ateles paniscus paniscus \{Ateles belzebuth hybridus and Ateles geoffroyi\}\}\} in genus Ateles.
