Maternal parity and its effect on adipose tissue deposition and endocrine sensitivity in the postnatal sheep
Maternal parity influences size at birth, postnatal growth and body composition with firstborn infants being more likely to be smaller with increased fat mass, suggesting that adiposity is set in early life. The precise effect of parity on fat mass and its endocrine sensitivity remains unclear and was, therefore, investigated in the present study. We utilised an established sheep model in which perirenalâabdominal fat mass (the major fat depot in the neonatal sheep) increases âŒ10-fold over the first month of life and focussed on the impact of parity on glucocorticoid sensitivity and adipokine expression in the adipocyte. Twin-bearing sheep of similar body weight and adiposity that consumed identical diets were utilised, and maternal blood samples were taken at 130 days of gestation. One offspring from each twin pair was sampled at 1 day of age, coincident with the time of maximal recruitment of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), whilst its sibling was sampled at 1 month, when UCP1 had disappeared. Plasma leptin was lower in nulliparous mothers than in multiparous mothers, and offspring of nulliparous mothers possessed more adipose tissue with increased mRNA abundance of leptin, glucocorticoid receptor and UCP2, adaptations that persisted up to 1 month of age when gene expression for interleukin-6 and adiponectin was also raised. The increase in fat mass associated with firstborn status is therefore accompanied by a resetting of the leptin and glucocorticoid axis within the adipocyte. Our findings emphasise the importance of parity in determining adipose tissue development and that firstborn offspring have an increased capacity for adipogenesis which may be critical in determining later adiposity
Sex differences in metabolic and adipose tissue responses to juvenile-onset obesity in sheep
Sex is a major factor determining adipose tissue distribution and the subsequent adverse effects of obesity-related disease including type 2 diabetes. The role of gender on juvenile obesity and the accompanying metabolic and inflammatory responses is not well established. Using an ovine model of juvenile onset obesity induced by reduced physical activity, we examined the effect of gender on metabolic, circulatory, and related inflammatory and energy-sensing profiles of the major adipose tissue depots. Despite a similar increase in fat mass with obesity between genders, males demonstrated a higher storage capacity of lipids within perirenal-abdominal adipocytes and exhibited raised insulin. In contrast, obese females became hypercortisolemic, a response that was positively correlated with central fat mass. Analysis of gene expression in perirenal-abdominal adipose tissue demonstrated the stimulation of inflammatory markers in males, but not females, with obesity. Obese females displayed increased expression of genes involved in the glucocorticoid axis and energy sensing in perirenal-abdominal, but not omental, adipose tissue, indicating a depot-specific mechanism that may be protective from the adverse effects of metabolic dysfunction and inflammation. In conclusion, young males are at a greater risk than females to the onset of comorbidities associated with juvenile-onset obesity. These sex-specific differences in cortisol and adipose tissue could explain the earlier onset of the metabolic-related diseases in males compared with females after obesity
A Cauchy-Dirac delta function
The Dirac delta function has solid roots in 19th century work in Fourier
analysis and singular integrals by Cauchy and others, anticipating Dirac's
discovery by over a century, and illuminating the nature of Cauchy's
infinitesimals and his infinitesimal definition of delta.Comment: 24 pages, 2 figures; Foundations of Science, 201
Secondary Beam Monitors for the NuMI Facility at FNAL
The Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) facility is a conventional neutrino
beam which produces muon neutrinos by focusing a beam of mesons into a long
evacuated decay volume. We have built four arrays of ionization chambers to
monitor the position and intensity of the hadron and muon beams associated with
neutrino production at locations downstream of the decay volume. This article
describes the chambers' construction, calibration, and commissioning in the
beam.Comment: Accepted for publication in Nucl. Instr. Meth.
Measuring the cosmological bulk flow using the peculiar velocities of supernovae
We study large-scale coherent motion in our universe using the existing Type
IA supernovae data. If the recently observed bulk flow is real, then some
imprint must be left on supernovae motion. We run a series of Monte Carlo
Markov Chain runs in various redshift bins and find a sharp contrast between
the z 0.05 data. The$z < 0.05 data are consistent with the bulk
flow in the direction (l,b)=({290^{+39}_{-31}}^{\circ},
{20^{+32}_{-32}}^{\circ}) with a magnitude of v_bulk = 188^{+119}_{-103} km/s
at 68% confidence. The significance of detection (compared to the null
hypothesis) is 95%. In contrast, z > 0.05 data (which contains 425 of the 557
supernovae in the Union2 data set) show no evidence for bulk flow. While the
direction of the bulk flow agrees very well with previous studies, the
magnitude is significantly smaller. For example, the Kashlinsky, et al.'s
original bulk flow result of v_bulk > 600 km/s is inconsistent with our
analysis at greater than 99.7% confidence level. Furthermore, our best-fit bulk
flow velocity is consistent with the expectation for the \Lambda CDM model,
which lies inside the 68% confidence limit.Comment: Version published in JCA
Ion Chambers for Monitoring the NuMI Neutrino Beam at FNAL
The Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beamline will deliver an intense
muon neutrino beam by focusing a beam of mesons into a long evacuated decay
volume. The beam must be steered with 1 mRad angular accuracy toward the Soudan
Underground Laboratory in northern Minnesota. We have built 4 arrays of
ionization chambers to monitor the neutrino beam direction and quality. The
arrays are located at 4 stations downstream of the decay volume, and measure
the remnant hadron beam and tertiary muons produced along with neutrinos in
meson decays. We review how the monitors will be used to make beam quality
measurements, and as well we review chamber construction details, radiation
damage testing, calibration, and test beam results.Comment: paper to appear in the proceedings of the 11th Beam Instrumentation

Randomisation and Derandomisation in Descriptive Complexity Theory
We study probabilistic complexity classes and questions of derandomisation
from a logical point of view. For each logic L we introduce a new logic BPL,
bounded error probabilistic L, which is defined from L in a similar way as the
complexity class BPP, bounded error probabilistic polynomial time, is defined
from PTIME. Our main focus lies on questions of derandomisation, and we prove
that there is a query which is definable in BPFO, the probabilistic version of
first-order logic, but not in Cinf, finite variable infinitary logic with
counting. This implies that many of the standard logics of finite model theory,
like transitive closure logic and fixed-point logic, both with and without
counting, cannot be derandomised. Similarly, we present a query on ordered
structures which is definable in BPFO but not in monadic second-order logic,
and a query on additive structures which is definable in BPFO but not in FO.
The latter of these queries shows that certain uniform variants of AC0
(bounded-depth polynomial sized circuits) cannot be derandomised. These results
are in contrast to the general belief that most standard complexity classes can
be derandomised. Finally, we note that BPIFP+C, the probabilistic version of
fixed-point logic with counting, captures the complexity class BPP, even on
unordered structures
Interpreting an action from what we perceive and what we expect
International audienceIn update logic as studied by Baltag, Moss, Solecki and van Benthem, little attention is paid to the interpretation of an action by an agent, which is just assumed to depend on the situation. This is actually a complex issue that nevertheless complies to some logical dynamics. In this paper, we tackle this topic. We also deal with actions that change propositional facts of the situation. In parallel, we propose a formalism to accurately represent an agent's epistemic state based on hyperreal numbers. In that respect, we use infinitesimals to express what would surprise the agents (and by how much) by contradicting their beliefs. We also use a subjective probability to model the notion of belief. It turns out that our probabilistic update mechanism satisfies the AGM postulates of belief revision
Ten Misconceptions from the History of Analysis and Their Debunking
The widespread idea that infinitesimals were "eliminated" by the "great
triumvirate" of Cantor, Dedekind, and Weierstrass is refuted by an
uninterrupted chain of work on infinitesimal-enriched number systems. The
elimination claim is an oversimplification created by triumvirate followers,
who tend to view the history of analysis as a pre-ordained march toward the
radiant future of Weierstrassian epsilontics. In the present text, we document
distortions of the history of analysis stemming from the triumvirate ideology
of ontological minimalism, which identified the continuum with a single number
system. Such anachronistic distortions characterize the received interpretation
of Stevin, Leibniz, d'Alembert, Cauchy, and others.Comment: 46 pages, 4 figures; Foundations of Science (2012). arXiv admin note:
