On CSP and the Algebraic Theory of Effects
We consider CSP from the point of view of the algebraic theory of effects,
which classifies operations as effect constructors or effect deconstructors; it
also provides a link with functional programming, being a refinement of Moggi's
seminal monadic point of view. There is a natural algebraic theory of the
constructors whose free algebra functor is Moggi's monad; we illustrate this by
characterising free and initial algebras in terms of two versions of the stable
failures model of CSP, one more general than the other. Deconstructors are
dealt with as homomorphisms to (possibly non-free) algebras.
One can view CSP's action and choice operators as constructors and the rest,
such as concealment and concurrency, as deconstructors. Carrying this programme
out results in taking deterministic external choice as constructor rather than
general external choice. However, binary deconstructors, such as the CSP
concurrency operator, provide unresolved difficulties. We conclude by
presenting a combination of CSP with Moggi's computational {\lambda}-calculus,
in which the operators, including concurrency, are polymorphic. While the paper
mainly concerns CSP, it ought to be possible to carry over similar ideas to
other process calculi
The Expectation Monad in Quantum Foundations
The expectation monad is introduced abstractly via two composable
adjunctions, but concretely captures measures. It turns out to sit in between
known monads: on the one hand the distribution and ultrafilter monad, and on
the other hand the continuation monad. This expectation monad is used in two
probabilistic analogues of fundamental results of Manes and Gelfand for the
ultrafilter monad: algebras of the expectation monad are convex compact
Hausdorff spaces, and are dually equivalent to so-called Banach effect
algebras. These structures capture states and effects in quantum foundations,
and also the duality between them. Moreover, the approach leads to a new
re-formulation of Gleason's theorem, expressing that effects on a Hilbert space
are free effect modules on projections, obtained via tensoring with the unit
interval.Comment: In Proceedings QPL 2011, arXiv:1210.029
Dagger Categories of Tame Relations
Within the context of an involutive monoidal category the notion of a
comparison relation is identified. Instances are equality on sets, inequality
on posets, orthogonality on orthomodular lattices, non-empty intersection on
powersets, and inner product on vector or Hilbert spaces. Associated with a
collection of such (symmetric) comparison relations a dagger category is
defined with "tame" relations as morphisms. Examples include familiar
categories in the foundations of quantum mechanics, such as sets with partial
injections, or with locally bifinite relations, or with formal distributions
between them, or Hilbert spaces with bounded (continuous) linear maps. Of one
particular example of such a dagger category of tame relations, involving sets
and bifinite multirelations between them, the categorical structure is
investigated in some detail. It turns out to involve symmetric monoidal dagger
structure, with biproducts, and dagger kernels. This category may form an
appropriate universe for discrete quantum computations, just like Hilbert
spaces form a universe for continuous computation
Novel Vector Design and Hexosaminidase Variant Enabling Self-Complementary Adeno-Associated Virus for the Treatment of Tay-Sachs Disease
GM2 gangliosidosis is a family of three genetic neurodegenerative disorders caused by the accumulation of GM2 ganglioside (GM2) in neuronal tissue. Two of these are due to the deficiency of the heterodimeric (α–β), “A” isoenzyme of lysosomal β-hexosaminidase (HexA). Mutations in the α-subunit (encoded by HEXA) lead to Tay-Sachs disease (TSD), whereas mutations in the β-subunit (encoded by HEXB) lead to Sandhoff disease (SD). The third form results from a deficiency of the GM2 activator protein (GM2AP), a substrate-specific cofactor for HexA. In their infantile, acute forms, these diseases rapidly progress with mental and psychomotor deterioration resulting in death by approximately 4 years of age. After gene transfer that overexpresses one of the deficient subunits, the amount of HexA heterodimer formed would empirically be limited by the availability of the other endogenous Hex subunit. The present study used a new variant of the human HexA α-subunit, μ, incorporating critical sequences from the β-subunit that produce a stable homodimer (HexM) and promote functional interactions with the GM2AP– GM2 complex. We report the design of a compact adeno-associated viral (AAV) genome using a synthetic promoter–intron combination to allow self-complementary (sc) packaging of the HEXM gene. Also, a previously published capsid mutant, AAV9.47, was used to deliver the gene to brain and spinal cord while having restricted biodistribution to the liver. The novel capsid and cassette design combination was characterized in vivo in TSD mice for its ability to efficiently transduce cells in the central nervous system when delivered intravenously in both adult and neonatal mice. This study demonstrates that the modified HexM is capable of degrading long-standing GM2 storage in mice, and it further demonstrates the potential of this novel scAAV vector design to facilitate widespread distribution of the HEXM gene or potentially other similar-sized genes to the nervous system
A regression method for real-time video quality evaluation
No-Reference (NR) metrics provide a mechanism to assess video quality in an ever-growing wireless network. Their low computational complexity and functional characteristics make them the primary choice when it comes to realtime content management and mobile streaming control. Unfortunately, common NR metrics suer from poor accuracy, particularly in network-impaired video streams. In this work, we introduce a regression-based video quality metric that is simple enough for real-time computation on thin clients, and comparably as accurate as state-of-the-art Full-Reference (FR) metrics, which are functionally and computationally inviable in real-time streaming. We benchmark our metric against the FR metric VQM (Video Quality Metric), finding a very strong correlation factor
Set optimization - a rather short introduction
Recent developments in set optimization are surveyed and extended including
various set relations as well as fundamental constructions of a convex analysis
for set- and vector-valued functions, and duality for set optimization
problems. Extensive sections with bibliographical comments summarize the state
of the art. Applications to vector optimization and financial risk measures are
discussed along with algorithmic approaches to set optimization problems
