    Adsorption of atomic and molecular oxygen on Si(100)2x1: coverage dependence of the Auger O KVV lineshape.

    By means of Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) we have monitored the room temperature adsorption of O2 and N2O on the clean Si(0 0 1)2 Ă— 1 surface. We have found, for the first time, a significant variation in the intensity ratio of the K L1 L1 and K L23 L23 O Auger lines in the submonolayer range. This variation can be related to a change in bonding configuration of the oxygen atom/molecule in the initial adsorption stage in which the influence of inter-atomic matrix elements of the Auger process cannot be neglected

    First results of the air shower experiment KASCADE

    The main goals of the KASCADE (KArlsruhe Shower Core and Array DEtector) experiment are the determination of the energy spectrum and elemental composition of the charged cosmic rays in the energy range around the knee at ca. 5 PeV. Due to the large number of measured observables per single shower a variety of different approaches are applied to the data, preferably on an event-by-event basis. First results are presented and the influence of the high-energy interaction models underlying the analyses is discussed.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures included, to appear in the TAUP 99 Proceedings, Nucl.     Partial clustering prevents global crystallization in a binary 2D colloidal glass former

    A mixture of two types of super-paramagnetic colloidal particles with long range dipolar interaction is confined by gravity to a flat interface of a hanging water droplet. The particles are observed by video microscopy and the dipolar interaction strength is controlled via an external magnetic field. The system is a model system to study the glass transition in 2D, and it exhibits partial clustering of the small particles. This clustering is strongly dependent on the relative concentration ξ\xi of big and small particles. However, changing the interaction strength Γ\Gamma reveals that the clustering does not depend on the interaction strength. The partial clustering scenario is quantified using Minkowski functionals and partial structure factors. Evidence that partial clustering prevents global crystallization is discussed
