Many-body Theory at Extreme Isospin
The structure of nuclei far off beta-stability is investigated by nuclear
many-body theory. In-medium interactions for asymmetric nuclear matter are
obtained by (Dirac-) Brueckner theory thus establishing the link of nuclear
forces to free space interactions. HFB and RPA theory is used to describe
ground and excited states of nuclei from light to heavy masses. In extreme
dripline systems pairing and core polarization are found to be most important
for the binding, especially of halo nuclei. The calculations show that far off
stability mean-field dynamics is gradually replaced by dynamical correlations,
giving rise to the dissolution of shell structures.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, to appear in the proceedings of Nuclear Physics

Teleological Essentialism: Generalized
Natural/social kind essentialism is the view that natural kind categories, both living and non-living natural kinds, as well as social kinds (e.g., race, gender), are essentialized. On this view, artifactual kinds are not essentialized. Our view—teleological essentialism—is that a broad range of categories are essentialized in terms of teleology, including artifacts. Utilizing the same kinds of experiments typically used to provide evidence of essentialist thinking—involving superficial change (study 1), transformation of insides (study 2) and inferences about offspring (study 3)—we find support for the view that a broad range of categories—living natural kinds, non-living natural kinds and artifactual kinds—are essentialized in terms of teleology. Study 4 tests a unique prediction of teleological essentialism and also provides evidence that people make inferences about purposes which in turn guide categorization judgments
Environments for sonic ecologies
This paper outlines a current lack of consideration for the environmental context of Evolutionary Algorithms used for the generation of music. We attempt to readdress this balance by outlining the benefits of developing strong coupling strategies between agent and en- vironment. It goes on to discuss the relationship between artistic process and the viewer and suggests a placement of the viewer and agent in a shared environmental context to facilitate understanding of the artistic process and a feeling of participation in the work. The paper then goes on to outline the installation ‘Excuse Me and how it attempts to achieve a level of Sonic Ecology through the use of a shared environmental context
Apollo 15 rake sample microbreccias and non-mare rocks: Bulk rock, mineral and glass electron microprobe analyses
Quantitative electron microprobe data of Apollo 15 nonmare rake samples are presented. Bulk analyses of lithic fragments in the nomare rocks (expressed in oxide weight-percent) and the corresponding CIPW molecular norms are given. The mineralogy of the rocks and lithic fragments are also given; structural formulae for complete analyses and molecular end-members for all mineral analyses are included. The mineral analyses include pyroxene, olivine, plagioclase, barian K-feldspar, spinel and ilmenite, cobaltian metallic nickel-iron as well as SiO2-K2O-rich residual glass. Electron micropobe analyses (oxide weight percent) of glasses in loose fines and microbreccia samples and their CIPW molecular norms are presented along with electron microprobe data on bulk, mineral, and matrix glass from chondrules
Teleological Essentialism
Placeholder essentialism is the view that there is a causal essence that holds category members together, though we may not know what the essence is. Sometimes the placeholder can be filled in by scientific essences, such as when we acquire scientific knowledge that the atomic weight of gold is 79. We challenge the view that placeholders are elaborated by scientific essences. On our view, if placeholders are elaborated, they are elaborated Aristotelian essences, a telos. Utilizing the same kinds of experiments used by traditional essentialists—involving superficial change (study 1), transformation of insides (study 2), acquired traits (study 3) and inferences about offspring (study 4)—we find support for the view that essences are elaborated by a telos. And we find evidence (study 5) that teleological essences may generate category judgments

Impact histories of Vesta and Vestoids inferred from howardites, eucrites and diogenites
The parent body of the howardites, eucrites and diogenites (HEDs) is thought to be asteroid (4) Vesta [1]. However, several eucrites have now been recognized, like NWA 011 and Ibitira, with major element compositions and mineralogy like normal eucrites but with different oxygen isotope compositions and minor element concentrations suggesting they are not from the same body [2, 3]. The discoveries of abnormal eucrites and V-type asteroids that are probably not from Vesta [see 4] raise the question whether the HEDs with normal oxygen isotopes are coming from Vesta [3]. To address this issue and understand more about the evolution of Vesta in preparation for the arrival of the Dawn spacecraft, we integrate fresh insights from Ar-Ar dating and oxygen isotope analyses of HEDs, radiometric dating of differentiated meteorites, as well as dynamical and astronomical studies of Vesta, the Vesta asteroid family (i.e., the Vestoids), and other V-type asteroids
Detecting the Neutrino Mass Hierarchy with a Supernova at IceCube
IceCube, a future km^3 antarctic ice Cherenkov neutrino telescope, is highly
sensitive to a galactic supernova (SN) neutrino burst. The Cherenkov light
corresponding to the total energy deposited by the SN neutrinos in the ice can
be measured relative to background fluctuations with a statistical precision
much better than 1%. If the SN is viewed through the Earth, the matter effect
on neutrino oscillations can change the signal by more than 5%, depending on
the flavor-dependent source spectra and the neutrino mixing parameters.
Therefore, IceCube together with another high-statistics experiment like
Hyper-Kamiokande can detect the Earth effect, an observation that would
identify specific neutrino mixing scenarios that are difficult to pin down with
long-baseline experiments. In particular, the normal mass hierarchy can be
clearly detected if the third mixing angle is not too small, sin^2 theta_13 <
10^-3. The small flavor-dependent differences of the SN neutrino fluxes and
spectra that are found in state-of-the-art simulations suffice for this
purpose. Although the absolute calibration uncertainty at IceCube may exceed
5%, the Earth effect would typically vary by a large amount over the duration
of the SN signal, obviating the need for a precise calibration. Therefore,
IceCube with its unique geographic location and expected longevity can play a
decisive role as a "co-detector" to measure SN neutrino oscillations. It is
also a powerful stand-alone SN detector that can verify the delayed-explosion
scenario.Comment: 19 pages, 6 Figs, final version accepted by JCAP, some references

Direct Urca neutrino rate in colour superconducting quark matter
If deconfined quark matter exists inside compact stars, the primary cooling
mechanism is neutrino radiation via the direct Urca processes d->u+e+antinu_e
and u+e->d+nu_e. Below a critical temperature, T_c, quark matter forms a colour
superconductor, one possible manifestation of which is a condensate of
quark Cooper pairs in an electric-charge neutralising background of electrons.
We compute the neutrino emission rate from such a phase, including charged
pair-breaking and recombination effects, and find that on a material
temperature domain below T_c the pairing-induced suppression of the neutrino
emission rate is not uniformly exponential. If gapless modes are present in the
condensed phase, the emissivity at low temperatures is moderately enhanced
above that of completely unpaired matter. The importance of charged current
pair-breaking processes for neutrino emission both in the fully gapped and
partially gapped regimes is emphasised.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; to appear in Phys. Rev. C (Rapid Comm.
Quantum walks of correlated photon pairs in two-dimensional waveguide arrays
We demonstrate quantum walks of correlated photons in a 2D network of
directly laser written waveguides coupled in a 'swiss cross' arrangement. The
correlated detection events show high-visibility quantum interference and
unique composite behaviour: strong correlation and independence of the quantum
walkers, between and within the planes of the cross. Violations of a
classically defined inequality, for photons injected in the same plane and in
orthogonal planes, reveal non-classical behaviour in a non-planar structure.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
