    Inverted ductal papilloma arising from the buccal minor salivary gland: A case report and immunohistochemical study

    AbstractOral inverted ductal papilloma is a rare, benign epithelial tumor that exhibits an endophytic growth pattern and is found almost exclusively in the minor salivary glands. We report on a case of inverted ductal papilloma in the buccal mucosa. We also performed an immunohistochemical study. The tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin and epithelial membrane antigen, while negative for calponin, S-100 protein, α-SMA, vimentin, and desmin. This result indicated that the lesion arises from the excretory duct near the oral mucosal surface but not the myoepithelial cells. In addition, Ki-67 labeling index of 3.96% indicated the low level of proliferation

    Effect of two desensitizing agents on dentin permeability in vitro

    Objective The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of two desensitizing agents and water on hydraulic conductance in human dentin. Material and Methods GLUMA Desensitizer PowerGel (GLU) contains glutaraldehyde (GA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and Teethmate Desensitizer (TD) is a powder comprising tetracalcium phosphate (TTCP) and dicalcium phosphate anhydrous (DCPA) that is mixed with water. Deionized water was used as a negative control (CTR). Thirty discs with a thickness of 1.2 mm were cut from the coronal dentin of the third molars and cleaned with 0.5 M EDTA (pH 7.4). After being mounted in a split-chamber device, the discs were pressurized with water at 1 kPa and 3 kPa in order to measure flow rates with a highly sensitive micro-flow sensor and to calculate hydraulic conductance as a baseline value (BL). Following the application of GLU, TD, and CTR (n=10), hydraulic conductance was remeasured with intermittent storage in water after 15 min, 1 d, 1 w, and 1 m.     Reevaluation of analytical methods for photogenerated singlet oxygen

    The aim of the present study is to compare different analytical methods for singlet oxygen and to discuss an appropriate way to evaluate the yield of singlet oxygen photogenerated from photosensitizers. Singlet oxygen photogenerated from rose bengal was evaluated by electron spin resonance analysis using sterically hindered amines, spectrophotometric analysis of 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran oxidation, and analysis of fluorescent probe (Singlet Oxygen Sensor Green®). All of the analytical methods could evaluate the relative yield of singlet oxygen. The sensitivity of the analytical methods was 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran < electron spin resonance < Singlet Oxygen Sensor Green®. However, Singlet Oxygen Sensor Green® could be used only when the concentration of rose bengal was very low (<1 µM). In addition, since the absorption spectra of 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran is considerably changed by irradiation of 405 nm laser, photosensitizers which are excited by light with a wavelength of around 400 nm such as hematoporphyrin cannot be used in the 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran oxidation method. On the other hand, electron spin resonance analysis using a sterically hindered amine, especially 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinol and 2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-3-pyrroline-3-carboxamide, had proper sensitivity and wide detectable range for the yield of photogenerated singlet oxygen. Therefore, in photodynamic therapy, it is suggested that the relative yield of singlet oxygen generated by various photosensitizers can be evaluated properly by electron spin resonance analysis

    Safe and minimally invasive laminoplastic laminotomy using an ultrasonic bone curette for spinal surgery: technical note

    Background: Ultrasonic surgical aspirators have been used mainly for removing brain tumors. Because of their longitudinal and torsional tip, they are used for cutting the bone structures in spinal surgery installing a scalpel-type tip. The purpose of this report is to describe the effectiveness and surgical pitfalls of an ultrasonic bone curette in laminoplastic laminotomy and hemilaminotomy. Methods: We present 12 patients who underwent laminoplastic laminotomy and hemilaminotomy. We used a SONOPET UST-2001 ultrasonic bone curette with HB-05S handpieces (M and M Co, Ltd, Tokyo, Japan). After a tumor was removed, titanium plates were used for the laminoplastic laminotomy and hemilaminotomy. The technical advantage of an ultrasonic bone curette and procedure-related complication were examined. Results: There were no major procedure-related complications such as cord injury. Wound infection and subcutaneous fluid collection caused by cerebrospinal fluid leakage did not occur for reconstruction of posterior bony structure. In 1 patient with calcified dura mater associated with tumor, dural tear occurred. The width of the tip was narrow enough for resected laminae to be fused postoperatively, and spinal instability did not occur in all cases. Conclusion: The scalpel-type ultrasonic bone curette is useful for cutting bone and effective for reconstruction of the laminae. Laminotomy with an ultrasonic bone curette is safe and minimally invasive. To prevent dural tear, we recommend drilling laminae to make the bone thin as the first step, followed by cutting the remaining laminae using a bone curette especially in cases with calcified or tense dura mater.ArticleSURGICAL NEUROLOGY. 72(5):470-475 (2009)journal articl
