Asymmetrical cross-language priming effects
Three experiments were conducted to examine cross-language priming in bilinguals. The first was a cross-language primed lexical decision task experiment with Chinese-English bilinguals. Subjects made lexical decisions about primary associate targets in the two languages at the same rate, but priming occurred only when the prime was in their first language (L1), Chinese and the target was in their second language (L2), English. Experiment 2 produced the same pattern of asymmetrical priming with two alphabetic languages, French and Dutch. In Experiment 3, the crucial stimuli were translation equivalents. In contrast to the results of Experiments 1 and 2, priming occurred across languages in both the L1-L2 and L2-L1 conditions. However, this priming was also asymmetrical, with more priming occurring in the L1-L2 condition. A tentative separate-interconnected model of bilingual memory is described. It suggests that the representations of words expressed in different languages are stored in separate memory systems, which may be interconnected via one-to-one links between some translation equivalent representations as well as meaning-integration processes.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
A ferrite-filled cavity resonator for electronic article surveillance on metallic packaging (article)

The component of RF magnetic field perpendicular to the surface of the packaging induces eddy currents that suppress the magnetic flux linking the inductive element of the tag. In this work an inductive quarter-wavelength planar cavity, formed by wrapping aluminum foil around a ferrite core, was extended by wrapping additional capacitive layers of foil/dielectric around the ferrite-filled central region. This so-called ‘wrapped tag’ exhibits the frequency, Q-factor, and read distance characteristics of existing EAS tags, but is instead driven by RF magnetic fields parallel to the surface of the metallic packaging. In this article we compare the observed frequency response of the wrapped tag with a simple LC-resonator model that takes account of the tag’s geometrical features, and use the model to describe how the design and construction of the tag can be optimized. Finite element method modeling is used to reveal how the current flows in the wrapped foil of the tag. Imaging small-amplitude magnetization dynamics in a longitudinally magnetized microwire
Copyright © 2008 The American Physical SocietyWe have used time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy to study spin waves in a magnetic microwire subjected to a bias magnetic field applied parallel to its long axis. The spin-wave spectra obtained from different points near one end of the wire reveal several normal modes. We found that modes of a higher frequency occupied regions located further from the end of the wire. This was interpreted in terms of the confinement of the spin-wave modes by a nonuniform demagnetizing field. Furthermore, at a particular distance from the end of the wire, two or more modes occupying different regions along the width of the wire were observed. This was interpreted in terms of the confinement of the spin-wave modes due to an asymmetric variation in the local angle between the static magnetization and the effective direction of the wave vector of the confined modes. Images of the dynamic magnetization that are acquired at fixed pump-probe time delays revealed stripes lying perpendicular to the long axis of the wire and, hence, to the applied magnetic field. We interpret the stripe pattern in terms of a collective mode of the quasiperiodic system of ripple domains existing within the polycrystalline sample. Cur results give an additional insight into the connection between the nonuniform static magnetic state in small magnetic elements and their precessional dynamics, which is fundamentally important for the design of future high-speed switching and spin-wave logic devices of magnonics
Domain-wall pinning, nonadiabatic spin-transfer torque, and spin-current polarization in permalloy wires doped with vanadium
Copyright © 2010 The American Physical SocietyUsing pulsed-current measurements we investigate the domain-wall depinning via spin-transfer torque from pinning potentials in V-doped Ni80Fe20 wires. The domain-wall depinning boundary, showing the variation of threshold current density with longitudinal magnetic field is measured and reproduced using micromagnetic simulations. This method allows us to determine the spin-current polarization and nonadiabaticity parameter in these materials. By increasing the V concentration we show that the nonadiabaticity parameter is increased while the Gilbert damping is unaffected. On the other hand the spin-current polarization is decreased, resulting in larger threshold current densities

Uranium isotope variation within vein type uranium ore deposits
Isotopic composition of uranium has previously been used to infer the depositional redox environment of uranium ore concentrates and also provide a potential signature to inform nuclear forensic investigations. This study evaluates the diagnostic power of the U isotope signature by investigating (1) the heterogeneity of U isotope compositions in samples collected from the same mine and/or vein, and (2) the influence of U ore processing on 238U/235U and 234U/238U ratios. These characteristics are explored via high precision mass spectrometric measurement of vein type uranium ore samples collected predominantly from mines located in central Portugal and Southwest England. Samples collected from the same vein and mine exhibit δ238U values from −0.16 to +0.03 (±0.04) ‰ and −1.6 to −64.7 (±0.4) ‰ for δ234U (±2SD). These variations can be attributed to redox-driven isotope fractionation processes and/or U redistribution during localised leaching and re-precipitation. Analyses of residues and leachates from small-scale batch experiments designed to simulate industrial U ore leaching procedures reveal significant positive and negative changes in isotope composition in the leachate relative to the bulk material (up to 0.21 ± 0.06‰ for δ238U and 62.0 ± 0.6‰ for δ234U). These findings highlight the possibility of significantly different δ238U and δ234U of uranium ore concentrate from the same mine even if manufacturing processes remain unchanged
Graphene overcoats for ultra-high storage density magnetic media
Hard disk drives (HDDs) are used as secondary storage in digital electronic devices owing to low cost and large data storage capacity. Due to the exponentially increasing amount of data, there is a need to increase areal storage densities beyond~1Tb/in^2. This requires the thickness of carbon overcoats (COCs) to be<2 nm. However, friction, wear, corrosion, and thermal stability are critical concerns below 2 nm, limiting current technology, and restricting COC integration with heat assisted magnetic recording technology (HAMR). Here we show that graphene-based overcoats can overcome all these limitations, and achieve two-fold reduction in friction and provide better corrosion and wear resistance than state-of-the-art COCs, while withstanding HAMR conditions. Thus, we expect that graphene overcoats may enable the development of 4-10 Tb/in^2 areal density HDDs when employing suitable recording technologies, such as HAMR and HAMR+bit patterned media
Final Report of the Fifth Meeting of Scientific Experts on Fish Stocks in the Central Arctic Ocean
This report provides a summary of the 5th meeting of scientific experts on Fish Stocks in the Central
Arctic Ocean (FiSCAO) on October 24‐26, 2017, in Ottawa, Canada.
At the request of the 10 parties negotiating on an agreement to prevent unregulated commercial fishing
in the High Seas portion of the Central Arctic Ocean (CAO), participants of the 5th FiSCAO meeting were
tasked with addressing four Terms of Reference, summarized below:
ToR 1. Design a 1‐3 year long mapping program.
ToR 2. Design a monitoring program.
ToR 3. Identify human, financial, vessel/equipment resources needed for mapping and
monitoring.
ToR 4. Develop data collection, sharing, and hosting protocols that outline the details of what
and how data shall be collected, shared, and hosted for consideration by the Parties.
The 5th FiSCAO meeting included scientific representatives from seven states including Canada, the
People's Republic of China, the European Union, Iceland, the Republic of Korea, the Kingdom of Norway
and the United States of America. The meeting also included representatives from the International
Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) and
the Arctic Council’s Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment (PAME) and Conservation of Arctic
Flora and Fauna (CAFF) working groups.
The report summarizes the elements for collecting baseline data (i.e., a mapping program) in the high
seas CAO to achieve the goals of documenting species distributions, relative abundances and key
ecosystem parameters (ToR 1). The mapping program describes the priority areas to sample, the types
of data to collect and possible data collection approaches to employ. Participants emphasized that
existing planned surveys are very limited, and that significant dedicated resources will be required to
implement the mapping program.
The report outlines a strategy for monitoring indicators of fish stocks and ecosystem components (ToR
2). The report includes a list of existing monitoring programs and a prioritized list of indicators to detect
environmental change in the high seas CAO. Further refinement of a monitoring program will use
information from the mapping program (ToR 1). Participants emphasized the need to begin monitoring
as soon as possible and that additional research is required to operationalize monitoring indicators.
The report summarizes the preliminary cost estimates (ToR 3) to implement a mapping program to
collect data in the high seas portion of the CAO using a vessel of opportunity and in the Pacific Gateway
region of the CAO using an independently‐organized survey. Cost implications for the monitoring
program and other scientific activities are also listed (e.g., data analysis, data management).
The report includes a draft data sharing policy as the foundation for a future data sharing protocol,
including the technical specifications for data sharing (ToR 4). The development of the data sharing
protocol will require negotiation and legal review among the participating states. A data management
and data sharing pilot study on a CAO fish database is suggested to test a framework
