The polycystic kidney disease 1 gene encodes a 14 kb transcript and lies within a duplicated region on chromosome 16

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common genetic disorder that frequently results in renal fallure due to progressive cyst development. The major locus, PKD1, maps to 16p13.3. We identified a chromosome translocation associated with ADPKD that disrupts a gene (PBP) encoding a 14 kb transcript in the PKD1 candidate region. Further mutations of the PBP gene were found in PKD1 patients, two deletions (one a de novo event) and a splicing defect, confirming that PBP is the PKD1 gene. This gene is located adjacent to the TSC2 locus in a genomic region that is reiterated more proximally on 16p. The duplicate area encodes three transcripts substantially homologous to the PKD1 transcript. Partial sequence analysis of the PKD1 transcript shows that it encodes a novel protein whose function is at present unknown

Insights from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service

In recent years, mediation has become increasingly popular as a means to resolve conflict. One important issue that arises out of the recent explosive growth in the practice of mediation is. what do mediators need to know in order to assist the parties in resolving their conflicts? This research attemtps to identify the determinants of mediator competence by examining the knowledge, skills and abilities of mediators in public sector labor relations. The research focuses on the core competencies requirements for mediators with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service and suggests which of the competencies may be applicable to mediation in other contexts.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline

Impact of synthetic pyrethroid-sheep dip on the microflora present in animal slurries.

The chemical constituents of sheep dip in the UK are currently changing from organophosphate-based to synthetic pyrethroid-based insecticides. As a result, changes are also being made to the methods of disposal of these chemicals in the environment, such that pyrethroid sheep dips must now be diluted in animal slurry or water. To date, there is a lack of quantitative information on the impact of the insecticide on the indigenous microflora of animal slurries. This paper investigated the impact of Bayticol (synthetic pyrethroid sheep dip) over a range of concentrations on selected populations of bacteria within animal slurry. It was found that, with increasing pesticide concentration, there was up to a four orders of magnitude increase in the numbers of faecal coliforms and pathogens, such as putative Salmonella spp. These findings have implications for the disposal of sheep dip-amended animal slurries to land from several aspects: (i) the longevity of putative pathogens in the field may require re-evaluation of the time required before the return of grazing livestock to a slurry-amended field; (ii) the potential for the transfer of pathogenic bacteria and faecal coliforms into human and animal foodchains, and (iii) the increased potential for faecal coliforms being washed into streams, rivers and coastal bathing waters

Personal meanings, values and feelings relating to physical activity and exercise participation in female undergraduates : a qualitative exploration

Understanding was sought of the ways that female students understand and feel about physical activity and exercise participation, to inform effective and ethical intervention. Sixteen women participated in semi-structured interviews which were analysed thematically, using QSR NUD*IST 4. Physical activity and exercise proved emotive topics and meant different things to different people. Some women associated physical activity and exercise with enjoyment, or achieving their goals. Others saw exercise in particular as a duty, associated with feelings of guilt and inadequacy. Findings supported the value of promoting realistic goals, and careful choice of activities according to individual preferences
