    The Type Ic Hypernova SN 2002ap

    Photometric and spectroscopic data of the energetic Type Ic supernova (SN) 2002ap are presented, and the properties of the SN are investigated through models of its spectral evolution and its light curve. The SN is spectroscopically similar to the "hypernova" SN 1997ef. However, its kinetic energy [(410)×1051\sim (4-10) \times 10^{51} erg] and the mass ejected (2.5-5 MM_{\odot}) are smaller, resulting in a faster-evolving light curve. The SN synthesized 0.07M\sim 0.07 M_{\odot} of 56^{56}Ni, and its peak luminosity was similar to that of normal SNe. Brightness alone should not be used to define a hypernova, whose defining character, namely very broad spectral features, is the result of a high kinetic energy. The likely main-sequence mass of the progenitor star was 20-25 MM_{\odot}, which is also lower than that of both hypernovae SNe 1997ef and 1998bw. SN 2002ap appears to lie at the low-energy and low-mass end of the hypernova sequence as it is known so far.     Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey for An Optical Counterpart of GW170817

    We perform a zz-band survey for an optical counterpart of a binary neutron star coalescence GW170817 with Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam. Our untargeted transient search covers 23.623.6 deg2^2 corresponding to the 56.6%56.6\% credible region of GW170817 and reaches the 50%50\% completeness magnitude of 20.620.6 mag on average. As a result, we find 60 candidates of extragalactic transients, including J-GEM17btc (a.k.a. SSS17a/DLT17ck). While J-GEM17btc is associated with NGC 4993 that is firmly located inside the 3D skymap of GW170817, the other 59 candidates do not have distance information in the GLADE v2 catalog or NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED). Among 59 candidates, 58 are located at the center of extended objects in the Pan-STARRS1 catalog, while one candidate has an offset. We present location, zz-band apparent magnitude, and time variability of the candidates and evaluate the probabilities that they are located inside of the 3D skymap of GW170817. The probability for J-GEM17btc is 64%64\% being much higher than those for the other 59 candidates (9.3×1032.1×101%9.3\times10^{-3}-2.1\times10^{-1}\%). Furthermore, the possibility, that at least one of the other 59 candidates is located within the 3D skymap, is only 3.2%3.2\%. Therefore, we conclude that J-GEM17btc is the most-likely and distinguished candidate as the optical counterpart of GW170817.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures.     Superhump Evolution in the Ultrashort Period Dwarf Nova 1RXS J232953.9+062814

    Abstract We report on the evolution of superhumps and late superhumps in an ultrashort period dwarf nova, 1RXS J232953.9++062814, during the superoutburst in 2001 November. Ordinary superhumps were observed throughout a plateau phase, a rapid fading phase, and a rebrightening phase. During the plateau phase, the superhump period increased with time at a large rate of Pdot=1.19±0.24×104P_\mathrm{dot} = 1.19 \pm 0.24 \times 10^{-4}. In conjunction with the rebrightening phenomenon, these characteristics indicate that an accretion disk expanded further outward from the 3:13:1 resonance radius, which caused a large amount of left over matter at the outer disk, even after the superoutburst. In the post-outburst phase, we detected late superhumps superimposed on dominant double-peak modulations. Late superhumps were observed at least for 10 d without a significant period change. We detected the first normal outburst of this object on 2001 December 26. The interval between the superoutburst and this normal one is 53 d. This short recurrence time supports a high mass-transfer rate in this system. Concerning the evolutionary status of 1RXS J232953.9++062814, we propose that it is a progenitor of AM CVn stars on the evolutionary course of the cataclysmic variable channel in which systems have a secondary star with a hydrogen-exhausted core

    Involvement of the Precuneus/Posterior Cingulate Cortex Is Significant for the Development of Alzheimer’s Disease: A PET (THK5351, PiB) and Resting fMRI Study

    Background: Imaging studies in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) have yet to answer the underlying questions concerning the relationship among tau retention, neuroinflammation, network disruption and cognitive decline. We compared the spatial retention patterns of 18F-THK5351 and resting state network (RSN) disruption in patients with early AD and healthy controls.Methods: We enrolled 23 11C-Pittsburgh compound B (PiB)-positive patients with early AD and 24 11C-PiB-negative participants as healthy controls. All participants underwent resting state functional MRI and 18F-THK5351 PET scans. We used scaled subprofile modeling/principal component analysis (SSM/PCA) to reduce the complexity of multivariate data and to identify patterns that exhibited the largest statistical effects (variances) in THK5351 concentration in AD and healthy controls.Findings: SSM/PCA identified a significant spatial THK5351 pattern composed by mainly three clusters including precuneus/posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), right and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) which accounted for 23.6% of the total subject voxel variance of the data and had 82.6% sensitivity and 79.1% specificity in discriminating AD from healthy controls. There was a significant relationship between the intensity of the 18F-THK5351 covariation pattern and cognitive scores in AD. The spatial patterns of 18F-THK5351 uptake showed significant similarity with intrinsic functional connectivity, especially in the PCC network. Seed-based connectivity analysis from the PCC showed significant decrease in connectivity over widespread brain regions in AD patients. An evaluation of an autopsied AD patient with Braak V showed that 18F-THK5351 retention corresponded to tau deposition, monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) and astrogliosis in the precuneus/PCC.Interpretation: We identified an AD-specific spatial pattern of 18F-THK5351 retention in the precuneus/PCC, an important connectivity hub region in the brain. Disruption of the functional connections of this important network hub may play an important role in developing dementia in AD
