Density Discontinuity of a Neutron Star and Gravitational Waves

    Get PDF
We calculate quasi-normal f- and g-modes of a neutron star with density discontinuity, which may appear in a phase transition at extreme high density. We find that discontinuity will reflect largely on the f-mode, and that the g-mode could also be important for a less massive star.Comment: REVTeX,18 pages, 8 figure

Rigorous analysis of the effects of electron-phonon interactions on magnetic properties in the one-electron Kondo lattice model

The Kondo lattice model (KLM) is a typical model describing heavy fermion systems. In this paper, we consider the interaction of phonons with the system described by the one-electron KLM. Magnetic properties of the ground state of this model are revealed in a rigorous form. Furthermore, we derive the effective Hamiltonian in the strong coupling limit (JJ\to \infty) for the strength of the spin-exchange interaction JJ; we examine the magnetic properties of the ground state of the effective Hamiltonian and prove that the Aizenman--Lieb theorem concerning the magnetization holds for the effective Hamiltonian at finite temperatures. Generalizing the obtained results, we clarify a mechanism for the stability of magnetic properties of the ground state in the one-electron KLM system

Discrimination of Oral Mucosal Disease Inspired by Diagnostic Process of Specialist

A discrimination of oral mucosal diseases is very important in clinical site. Therefore, a development of a screening support system for oral mucosal diseases which supports the diagnosis of clinical dentist is required. In this paper, a discrimination method based on fuzzy inference using four attributes (existence of vitiligos, bulges, granular patterns, and reddening) for oral mucosal diseases is proposed. As the results of the experiment, the discrimination rates of squamous cell carcinoma, leukoplakia and lichen planus were 87%, 70% and 87%, respectively. The results suggest that the proposed method is effective in discriminating oral mucosal diseases

Drastic shift in flowering phenology of F₁ hybrids causing rapid reproductive isolation in Imperata cylindrica in Japan

    1. Hybridization is a major source of phenotypic variation and a driving force for evolution. Although novel hybrid traits can often disrupt adaptive relationships between the parental phenotypes and their environments, how new hybrid traits disrupt local adaptation remains unclear. Here, we report how a new phenotype of hybrids between two Imperata cylindrica ecotypes contributes to rapid reproductive isolation from their parents and affects hybrid fitness. 2. We analysed 350 accessions of I. cylindrica collected from the 1980s to the 2010s throughout Japan to explore the genetic population structure of the hybrids. We surveyed the flowering periods, seed set, and germination of two ecotypes and their hybrids in both natural habitats and common gardens. 3. Genetic analyses of population structure revealed that the hybrid populations consisted of only F1 individuals, without advanced generation hybrids. The flowering phenology of the F1 plants was delayed until autumn, 5–6 months later than the parental ecotypes. The drastic shift in flowering phenology prevents F1s from backcrossing. In addition, it changes their seed dispersal time to winter. Germination is inhibited by low temperatures, and the seeds likely decay before the next spring, resulting in the absence of an F2 generation. We identified the environmental mismatch of the F1 population as a specific mechanism for the maintenance of an only F1 population. 4. Synthesis. We have demonstrated that this flowering phenology mismatch promotes reproductive isolation between the parents and F1s and affects various temporal components of the hybrids, resulting in a unique hybrid population consisting only of F1s. This system sheds light on the importance of hybrid traits in driving rapid reproductive isolation

Ferrocenylnaphthalene Diimide-Based Electrochemical Detection of Aberrant Methylation in hTERT Gene

    Get PDF
Since aberrant methylation at CpG sites is linked to the silencing of tumor suppressor genes, DNA methylation analysis is important for cancer diagnosis. We developed ferrocenylnaphthalene diimide (FND), which has two ferrocenyl moieties at the substituent termini, as an electrochemical indicator for hybridized DNA duplexes. In this study, we attempted to detect aberrant methylation of human telomerase reverse transcriptase gene (hTERT), an efficient cancer marker, using FND-based hybridization coupled with electrochemical detection via a multi-electrode chip

Fluorescence-guided bone resection by using Visually Enhanced Lesion Scope in diffuse chronic sclerosingosteomyelitis of the mandible: clinical and pathological evaluation

    Get PDF
Diffuse chronic sclerosingosteomyelitis (DCSO) is a refractory disease, becausethe etiology and pathogenesis remain poorly understood and to determine the border betweenunhealthy boneandhealthybone is difficult. However, progressive inflammation, clinical symptoms and a high recurrence rate of DCSO were the reasons for surgical treatment. We report a case of a 66-year old woman with DCSO of the right side of mandible who was treated with hemimandibulectomy and simultaneous reconstruction by vascularized free fibula flap. After preoperative administration of minocycline for 1 month, the bone fluorescence was successfully monitored by using a Visually Enhanced Lesion Scope (VELscope®). Intraoperatively, we could determine the resection boundaries. We investigated the clinical and histopathological findings. The fluorescence findings were well correlated with histopathological findings. Using a VELscope®was handy and useful to determine the border between DCSO lesion andhealthybone. The free fibula flap under the minocycline-derived bone fluorescence by using a VELscope®offered a good quality of mandibular bone and the successful management of an advanced and refractory DCSO

The focus of this study was on the development of mathematics teachers via teacher off-the-job-training at an attached junior high school. In this paper, we analyzed the comments of mathematics teachers participating in teacher off-the-job-training.The followings outcomes were identified: a) Demonstration classes were conducted in a unique way, where participants observed two classes in which the the same unit was taught but in different ways. This was beneficial to participants. b) Participants in the demonstration class were able to carefully observe the behavior of the instructor. c) This method enabled participants to fully discuss the strengths of the teaching materials
