The aim of the study was to develop a scale to determine number sense of middle grade students and through the developed scale to introduce a structure of number sense and make a definition reflecting its structural characteristics. Therefore, a draft scale was prepared based on the six dimensions identified by Yang (1995). The scale was applied to 584 middle grade students from four different schools located in the districts of Çankaya and Gölbaşı in Ankara. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was found to be .86 for the scale with seventeen items. The result of the exploratory factor analysis showed that the scale consists of three dimensions. Eight items clustered in the first dimension, four items clustered in the second dimension and finally, five items clustered in the last dimension were defined as flexibility in calculation, conceptual thinking in fraction and using benchmark (reference points), respectively. Analizler sonunda on yedi maddelik ölçeğin Cronbach Alpha güvenirlik katsayısı 0,86 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Açımlayıcı faktör analizi sonucunda ölçeğin üç boyuttan oluştuğu ortaya çıkmıştır. İlk boyutta toplanan sekiz maddeye “hesaplamada esneklik”, ikinci boyutta toplanan dört maddeye “kesirlerde kavramsal düşünme”, beş maddeden oluşan son boyuta ise “kıyaslama (referans) noktası kullanımı” adları verilmişti

Contexts used for real life connections in mathematics textbook for 6th graders

The aim of this study is to examine the real life connections in the mathematics textbook for 6th graders and to identify how the contexts used in these connections are handled depending on learning areas. Document analysis of qualitative research methods was used in the study. The results of the study revealed that almost half of the activities (46.6%) in the textbook was connected with real life. The contexts used in these real life connections were analyzed by categorizing them under two different context types: weak and rich context. It can be concluded from the results of this research that the weak contexts were mostly utilized (68.4 %) in real life connections. When these contexts were analyzed on the basis of the learning area itself, it was revealed that weak contexts are frequently employed in the learning area of algebra, while rich contexts are most commonly used in the learning area of data processing

8th Grade Student’s Skill of Connecting Mathematics to Real Life

The purpose of this study is to examine 8th grade students’ skills of connecting mathematics to real life. This study uses survey design since it aims to determine existing situations regarding to students’ skills of connecting mathematics to real life. The study sample consists of 176 students in total, who are studying at a state school in the Etimesgut district of Ankara in the second semester of 2016-2017 academic year. “Connecting mathematics to real life scale” which is developed by the researchers, used as the data collection tool of this study. In this scale, students are provided with real life situations and then asked to connect these situations with mathematical concepts. During the data analysis, the responses of students examined in detail and subsequently general categories (levels) which identify students’ mathematical connection skill, were created and consequently four levels of connecting (Level 1, 2, 3 and 4) were defined. Study findings are showed that, participating 8th grade students’ skill of connecting mathematics to real life is not in sufficient level. It is observed that, most of the students can only connect mathematics in real life with numbers and shapes

Pre-Service Elementary Mathematics Teachers' Views on Model Eliciting Activities

The aim of this study is to investigate the views of pre-service elementary mathematics teachers on model eliciting activities and the nature of mathematics and of doing mathematics via MEAs after experiencing four model-eliciting activities in a 14 week "Modeling in Teaching Mathematics Course" offered as an elective course at a major university in Ankara, Turkey. For this purpose, a focus group interview was conducted with nine pre-service elementary mathematics teachers. The interview took about an hour and video-recorded. Findings indicated that pre-service elementary mathematics teachers have positive views on model eliciting activities in learning and teaching elementary school mathematics. (C) 2013 The Authors. The aim of the study is to investigate the Turkish middle grade students' performances in mathematical pattern tasks. It also aimed at revealing the differences in students' performances in terms of their grade level and pattern presentation contexttable, shape, word problem and numeric sequences. The study was conducted with two sixth, two seventh, and one eighth grade class from a private school located in the district of Cankaya in Ankara, Turkey. This study is a descriptive study which is aimed to describe some characteristics of the current sample. To collect the data a "mathematical pattern achievement test" (MPAT) was used.
