What role do language learning mindsets play in English Medium Instruction? A comparison of Engineering and Business Administration in Turkey.
This article explores the relationship between Turkish undergraduate students’ language learning mindsets, English language achievement, and English medium instruction (EMI) academic success. Student test score data on an EMI course and an English language course were collected from fourth year students studying mechatronics engineering (n = 68) and business administration (n = 75) at a public university. Students also responded to the Language Learning Mindsets Inventory (Lou & Noels, 2019). Regression analyses revealed that both incremental (positively) and entity (negatively) mindsets predicted academic success in engineering. Neither mindset was a statistically significant predictor of mechatronics engineering students’ English language achievement. Business administration students’ academic success and English language achievement were both statistically significantly predicted by both incremental (positively) and entity (negatively) mindsets. These results are discussed according to discipline-based differences in EMI courses and pedagogical implications are explored
Congenital coronary-pulmonary artery fistula originating from right and left coronary artery
Coronary artery fistula (CAF) is a rare congenital anomalywith an incidence of 1 in 50 000 live births. The fistula wasobserved at the right coronary artery in 53%, the left coronaryartery in 42% and both coronary artery in 5% of thecases. Echocardiography examination in a 46 year-oldwoman with the symptoms of chest pain, palpitation anddyspnea revealed a severe mitral valve insufficiency anda moderate to severe tricuspid valve insufficiency. A CAForiginating from the proximal part of the left anterior descendingartery (LAD) and another fistula originating fromosteal part of the right coronary artery (RCA) were detectedby coronary angiography. Both fistulas were draininginto the main pulmonary artery. The coronary artery fistulaclosed under cardiopulmonary by-pass. Mitral insufficiencyoriginated from the posterior leaflet was diagnosedintra-operative exploration, and thereafter it was repairedwith mitral annuloplasty including a quadrangular resectionand use of a 32 No St Jude mitral ring. Tricuspid valvewas repaired with Calangos Ring annuloplasty. Followingsix day hospital stay, the woman was discharged free ofany symptom.Key words: Dyspnea, double arteriovenous fistula, mitral and tricuspid insufficienc
COVID-19 sürecinde uzaktan eğitim ile geometri derslerinde aktarılan değerler
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, countries have had to change their usual teaching environment, and processes (especially traditional face to face education) with distance education. The purpose of this study was to investigate the Grade 9 mathematics course contents shared on the EBA platform in terms of mathematics values (mathematical values and mathematics educational values). In this sense, this study was a qualitative research based on document review. Data were collected from the Grade 9 mathematics course contents that exist in the EBA affiliated to the Turkish Ministry of National Education and were analysed using semantic content analysis. The results showed that the mathematical values such as objectivism, openness, rationalism, and the mathematics educational values such as formalistic view of mathematics learning, inquiry, instrumental understanding, facts & theories are often emphasized in distance education mathematics courses. The results of the study were also compared in detail with the results of the face-to-face mathematics education studies in the relevant literature (especially in the context of Turkey) and in this context some suggestions were also made for further studies.COVID-19 salgını nedeniyle, ülkeler alışılagelen öğretim ortam ve süreçlerini uzaktan eğitimle değiştirmek
zorunda kalmıştır. Bu bağlamda bu çalışmanın amacı, Eğitim Bilişim Ağı [EBA] platformunda paylaşılan dokuzuncu
sınıf geometri ders içeriklerini matematik değerleri (matematiksel değerler ve matematik eğitimsel değerleri) açısından
incelemektir.

Depressive Symptoms in a General Population: Associations with Obesity, Inflammation, and Blood Pressure
To determine whether obesity, inflammation, or conventional risk factors are related to depressive symptoms (DeprSy) in the general population. Responses to 3 questions served to assess sense of depression. Body mass index (BMI), C-reactive protein (CRP), and other epidemiologic data of participants were available. In 1940, individuals who consulted a psychiatrist in the preceding year, or felt depressed (together DeprSy), 248 were female. Logistic regressions for adjusted associations of BMI with DeprSy were not significant as was serum CRP level. Diabetes and, in men, fasting glucose concentrations were associated with DeprSy. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was robustly inversely associated with DeprSy in diverse models at ORs of 0.74 (95%CI 0.63; 0.89) independent of confounders, including antihypertensive and lipid-lowering medication. The use of antidepressants could not explain the reduced BP. Women are predisposed to depression with which, not BMI and CRP, but SBP is inversely associated. Anti-inflammatory substances produced in depressed persons might explain the slightly lower BP
The effects of restless legs syndrome on sleep and quality of life during pregnancy: a comparative descriptive study
Objective: The study aimed to identify the effects of restless legs syndrome (RLS) on sleep quality and quality of life in pregnant women. Methods: This comparative and descriptive study was conducted with 109 pregnant women between the 24 and 39 weeks of gestation. The presence and severity of RLS were investigated using the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group’s Diagnostic Criteria Scale and Severity Rating Scale, and the effects of the syndrome on sleep and quality of life were evaluated. Results: The prevalence of RLS in pregnant women was found to be 47.7%. In the RLS group, 22.0% of the pregnant women had severe RLS symptoms and 20.2% had moderate RLS symptoms. The mean score for Restless Legs Syndrome Severity Rating Scale was determined 20.75±6.38. The mean score for quality of life scale was determined 17.75±3.73 in RLS group and 26.46±2.67 in non-RLS group. Conclusion: The difference between the mean scores for Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index of the pregnant women with RLS and those without the syndrome was found to be statistically significant. While the mean score for Quality of Life Scale in pregnant women with RLS was lower in general health, physical health and psychological health sub-dimensions, no statistically significant difference was found in social relations and environment sub-dimensions. It is recommended that nurses investigate RLS complaints of pregnant women and include non-pharmacological methods in their nursing practices
Epidemiology, anticoagulant treatment and risk of thromboembolism in patients with valvular atrial fibrillation: Results from Atrial Fibrillation in Turkey: Epidemiologic Registry (AFTER)
Background: The aim of this study was to perform a multicenter, prospective investigation regarding the epidemiology, the current effectiveness of therapeutic anticoagulation, and the risk of thromboembolism in patients with valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) based on the records of the Atrial Fibrillation in Turkey: Epidemiologic Registry (AFTER) study. Methods: Patients were selected from a total of 2,242 consecutive admissions that presented with AF diagnosed via electrocardiogram. Those diagnosed with non-valvular AF were excluded from the AFTER study population, which left 497 patients with valvular AF for analysis. Results: The etiology of valvular AF in patients was either attributed to rheumatic mitral valve stenosis (n = 217) or possessing a prosthetic heart valve (n = 280). Out of all the patients with valvular AF, 83.1% were taking warfarin for anticoagulation. Only 36.1% demonstrated a therapeutic international normalized ratio (INR), and among those patients it was found that 19.1% exhibited a labile INR. Multivariate analysis revealed that age was the only independent predictor of thromboembolic events in patients with valvular AF. Conclusions: Many valvular AF patients are not maintained at therapeutic INR levels, which poses a threat to patient health as they age and are at greater risk for thromboembolism
