    Simulation of cell movement through evolving environment: a fictitious domain approach

    A numerical method for simulating the movement of unicellular organisms which respond to chemical signals is presented. Cells are modelled as objects of finite size while the extracellular space is described by reaction-diffusion partial differential equations. This modular simulation allows the implementation of different models at the different scales encountered in cell biology and couples them in one single framework. The global computational cost is contained thanks to the use of the fictitious domain method for finite elements, allowing the efficient solve of partial differential equations in moving domains. Finally, a mixed formulation is adopted in order to better monitor the flux of chemicals, specifically at the interface between the cells and the extracellular domain

    Revisiting Local Campaign Effects: An Experiment Involving Literature Mail Drops in the 2007 Ontario Election

    An invariant feature of constituency election campaigns is the literature mail drop, usually a one-page leaflet or card left at the door profiling the candidate and appealing for electoral support. In this article, we report on a field experiment designed to assess the effects of such mail drops. The experiment was conducted during the 2007 Ontario provincial election campaign in the constituency of Cambridge and entailed distributing literature for the Green party candidate in that constituency. After randomly assigning constituency polls to treatment and control groups, and delivering the Green candidate’s partisan literature only to the selected treatment group polls, we compared the candidate’s support levels in the treated polls with those in the control group. Our research detected a modest effect associated with the literature drop. The effect was largely limited to constituency neighbourhoods fitting at least part of the Green party’s traditional demographic, that is, those with higher than average socio-economic status

    Adaptive Finite Element Simulation of Currents at Microelectrodes to a Guaranteed Accuracy. Application to Channel Microband Electrodes.

    We extend our earlier work (see K. Harriman et al., Technical Report NA99/19) on adaptive finite element methods for disc electrodes to the case of reaction mechanisms to the increasingly popular channel microband electrode configuration. We use the standard Galerkin finite element method for the diffusion-dominated (low-flow) case, and the streamline diffusion finite element method for the convection-dominated (high-flow) case. We first consider the simple E reaction mechanism (convection-diffusion equation) and we demonstrate excellent agreement with previous approximate analytical results across the range of parameters of interest, on comparatively coarse meshes. We then consider ECE and EC2E reaction mechanisms (linear and nonlinear systems of reaction-convection-diffusion equations, respectively); again we are able to demonstrate excellent agreement with previous results.\ud \ud The authors are pleased to acknowledge the financial support of the following organisations: a research studentship for KH; a Career Development Fellowship from the Medical Research Council for DJG, which has allowed them to undertake this research

    The influence of 6 weeks of maximal eccentric plantarflexor training on muscle-tendon mechanics

    Resistance training can influence muscle-tendon properties including strength, flexibility, stretch tolerance and muscle-tendon stiffness; however the specific influence of eccentric-only training is unknown. Therefore, the aims of the present study were to examine the effects of a 6-week maximal eccentric resistance training programme on isometric plantarflexor moment (MVC), dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM), stretch tolerance (peak passive moment), muscle and tendon stiffness and running economy. Thirteen recreationally active men (age = 20.0 ± 0.9 yr, mass = 75.9 ± 8.5 kg, height = 1.8 ± 0.1 m) volunteered for the study after giving written informed consent; ethical approval was granted from the University of Northampton. Training was performed twice weekly for six weeks and consisted of 5 sets of 12 repetitions of 3-s maximal eccentric contractions at 10°•s-1 from 20° plantarflexion to 10° dorsiflexion. Maximal isometric plantarflexor moment, dorsiflexion ROM, stretch tolerance, and muscle, tendon and muscle-tendon unit (MTU) stiffness were measured using isokinetic dynamometry, real-time ultrasound and 3D motion analyses before and after the training. Running economy (VO2) was determined at a running speed equating to 70%VO2max using online gas analysis. Repeated measures t-tests were used to determine significant differences between pre- and post-training data, significance accepted at p0.05). Analysis of ultrasound data revealed a significant decrease in muscle stiffness (20.6%; p0.05). While the training-induced increase in plantarflexor strength was expected, the substantial increases in ROM, stretch tolerance and tendon stiffness, and the reduction in passive muscle stiffness, were important and novel findings. Interestingly, when measured during passive stretch, MTU stiffness remained unchanged while tendon stiffness increased and muscle stiffness decreased. These disparate findings have clear implications for testing methodologies, and indicate that imaging techniques must be utilised in order to examine the effects of interventions on specific tissues. As the training clearly enhanced the capacity of the muscle to tolerate both tissue loading and deformation, which are commonly associated with muscle strain injury, these data have clear implications for both muscular performance and injury risk

    The influence of acute variable resistance loading on subsequent free-weight maximal squat performance

    Elastic bands attached to a loaded barbell during a squat exercise create a variable resistance (VR), thus changing the mechanical loading and stress placed through the musculoskeletal system. Preconditioning the neuromuscular system using near-maximal or maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) can induce a phenomenon known as post-activation potentiation (PAP) to enhance performance to ‘supramaximal’ levels. However, the potentiating effects of VR on subsequent free-weight resistance (FWR) squat performance have not been examined. Thus, the aim of the present study was to examine the influence of VR exercise using elastic bands on subsequent FWR squat performance. Sixteen recreationally active men (age = 26.0 ± 7.8 yr, height = 1.7 ± 0.2 m, mass 82.6 ± 12.7 kg) experienced in squatting (>3yr) volunteered for the study after giving written informed consent; ethical approval was granted from the University of Northampton. Subjects’ 1-RM were determined then on two subsequent days either a 3-RM FWR (control) or a 3-RM VR (experimental) squat exercise was performed at 85% 1-RM (35% of the load generated from band tension in the VR condition). Five minutes later, motion analysis recorded knee joint kinematics during a subsequent FWR 1-RM squat, with vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, rectus femoris and semitendinosus electromyograms (EMG) simultaneously recorded. Paired t-tests were used to determine significance, accepted at p0.05) or EMG amplitude (5.9%; p>0.05) occurred. No subjects increased 1-RM in the FWR condition, however 13 of 16 (81%) increased 1-RM by ~10% following VR. Preconditioning the neuromuscular system using VR significantly increased 1-RM without changes in knee extensor muscle activity or knee flexion angle, however eccentric and concentric velocities were reduced. Thus, VR can potentiate the neuromuscular system to enhance subsequent maximal lifting performance. The lack of change in EMG suggests that changes in muscle activity were small or non-existent, which may be explained by force-velocity effects (slower movement = larger forces). Alternatively a greater activation of hip musculature (not measured in the present study) may allow a greater total lower limb force to be developed. Regardless, as 1-RM increased greater lower-limb loading occurred, thus VR potentiated the neuromuscular system and could enhance training stimuli

    Ontario’s general election in Oct. 10, 2007, was unprecedented for several reasons. The election was held on a date fixed by legislation and not one set by the premier or his caucus, something new to Ontario and relatively new to Canadian politics. Turnout declined to 53%, the lowest ever in Ontario history. The incumbent Liberals won a second consecutive majority government, something the party had not achieved since 1937. And finally, the election featured a referendum question that asked voters in Ontario to approve reforms to the electoral system, a proposal that was overwhelmingly rejected. This article explores each of the above-stated elements as they unfolded in the election

    Injection seeded, diode pumped regenerative ring Nd:YAG amplifier for spaceborne laser ranging technology development

    A small, all solid state, regenerative ring amplifier designed as a prototype for space application is discussed. Novel features include dual side pumping of the Nd:YAG crystal and a triangular ring cavity design which minimizes the number of optical components and losses. The amplifier is relatively small (3 ns round trip time) even though standard optical elements are employed. The ring regeneratively amplifies a 100 ps single pulse by approximately 10(exp 5) at a repetition rate of 10 to 100 Hz. The amplifier is designed to be injection seeded with a pulsed, 100 ps laser diode at 1.06 microns, but another Nd:YAG laser system supplying higher pulse energies was employed for laboratory experiment. This system is a prototype laser oscillator for the Geoscience Laser Ranging System (GLRS) platform. Results on measurements of beam quality, astigmatism, and gain are given

    Quantum Control Theory for State Transformations: Dark States and their Enlightenment

    For many quantum information protocols such as state transfer, entanglement transfer and entanglement generation, standard notions of controllability for quantum systems are too strong. We introduce the weaker notion of accessible pairs, and prove an upper bound on the achievable fidelity of a transformation between a pair of states based on the symmetries of the system. A large class of spin networks is presented for which this bound can be saturated. In this context, we show how the inaccessible dark states for a given excitation-preserving evolution can be calculated, and illustrate how some of these can be accessed using extra catalytic excitations. This emphasises that it is not sufficient for analyses of state transfer in spin networks to restrict to the single excitation subspace.     Targeting Mr Average: Participation, gender equity and school sport partnerships

    The School Sport Partnership Programme (SSPP) is one strand of the national strategy for physical education and school sport in England, the physical education and school sport Club Links Strategy (PESSCL). The SSPP aims to make links between school physical education (PE) and out of school sports participation, and has a particular remit to raise the participation levels of several identified under-represented groups, of which girls and young women are one. National evaluations of the SSPP show that it is beginning to have positive impacts on young people's activity levels by increasing the range and provision of extra curricular activities (Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED), 2003, 2004, 2005; Loughborough Partnership, 2005, 2006). This paper contributes to the developing picture of the phased implementation of the programme by providing qualitative insights into the work of one school sport partnership with a particular focus on gender equity. The paper explores the ways in which gender equity issues have been explicitly addressed within the 'official texts' of the SSPP; how these have shifted over time and how teachers are responding to and making sense of these in their daily practice. Using participation observation, interview and questionnaire data, the paper explores how the coordinators are addressing the challenge of increasing the participation of girls and young women. The paper draws on Walby's (2000) conceptualisation of different kinds of feminist praxis to highlight the limitations of the coordinators' work. Two key themes from the data and their implications are addressed: the dominance of competitive sport practices and the PE professionals' views of targeting as a strategy for increasing the participation of under-represented groups. The paper concludes that coordinators work within an equality or difference discourse with little evidence of the transformative praxis needed for the programme to be truly inclusive. © 2008 Taylor & Francis
